(1) #Thread on Lachit Barphukan - the great #HinduHero of Assam

He fought multiple battles against #Mughals between 1662-71, of which the Battle of Saraighat (1671) is more well-known. Image
(2)
1622, Nov 24: Lachit Barphukan was born to Momai Tamuli Borbarua, the Commander-in-Chief of the #Ahom army.

The Ahom kingdom had its capital at Garhgaon (👇, right), and extended upto Manas river in the west (Bongaigaon - western-border town) Image
(3)
1662: Mughal invasion of Assam under Mir Jumla. Lachit had fought in the battle of Dikhowmukh as the leader of royal bodyguard (Dolakaksharia Barua)

During this invasion, a Muslim traveller with Mir Jumla takes note of Ahom weapons. ImageImage
(4)
The Padishahnama observes:-

1. Mostly-infantry-based nature of Ahom army.
2. Good naval fleet in quality and quantity.
3. Archers & musketeers with matchlocks.
4. Quick-marching army. Image
(5)
1663: A humiliating treaty by Mughals was imposed on #Ahoms - Treaty of Ghilajharighat. The first term of the treaty itself shines light on the Mughal #hedonism.

Ahom King Jayadhwaj Singha couldn't stand this and passed away later that year. Image

The successor Ahom King, Chakradhwaj Singha, was a diplomatic genius. He observed the outer appearances of friendship towards #Mughals, began assembling anti-Mughal coalition.

The army- & navy-rebuilding efforts under Lachit were to come to fruition 4 years later, in 1667 Image
(7)
1667: Lachit Barphukan (Barphukan = commander of royal army) recaptured #Guwahati, by taking the fort at Itakhuli in August.

The Mughal navy was also defeated in November. The news of loss at Guwahati reached Aurangzeb in Dec. ImageImageImage
(8)
1669-70: #Mughals invaded again. Lachit lured them into the network of fortifications around #Guwahati.

After a Mughal detachment was destroyed at Darrang pass, Mughals sent a deceiving letter to Ahom King of Lachit's surrender. Ahom PM Atan Buragohain.. Image
(9)
..convinced the King that Lachit was loyal & the letter is a Mughal ploy. In Apr '70, King Chakradhwaj died & Udayaditya Singha succeeded.

1671, Mar: At the time Lachit Barphukan was ill. A skirmish (without Lachit's leadership) broke out vs Mughals, but #Ahoms backed off. Image
(10)
Hearing this, Lachit decided to fight against all advice of vaidyas.

After throwing a coward from the boat into water, Lachit motivated his soldiers to fight till the end.Ahom boats dashed into Mughal fleet & sank them.

Their novel 'Panigarh' fortifications helped as well. ImageImageImageImage
(11)
Ahom navy under Lachit Barphukan was victorious!

1671, Apr: The Mughals retreated west of Manas river. Ahoms reinforced & fortified their outposts along the river & Guwahati.

After ~4 years of continued setbacks at the hands of Ahoms, #Mughals never invaded Assam again. Image
(12)
In honour of Lachit Barphukan's valour, the Ahom King Udayaditya Singha built a memorial in Jorhat (305 km east of Guwahati)

In their struggle & victories against #Mughals, Ahoms got 'additional incentive to organise effective opposition to Mughal aggression'.

(1) #Thread to examine the claim that the Khalsa flag was unfurled over #RedFort in 1783.
(2)
Gyani Gyan Singh, in his 1880 book, gives first ever written account of incidents at #RedFort.

Historian Hari Ram Gupta calls his account as, 'a bold statement which is not supported by any other evidence'.
(3)
Even such an account (written 97 years after the supposed-unfurling) does not mention Khalsa flag being unfurled at the #RedFort!

In his description of Sikh attack on Delhi, Hari Ram Gupta doesn't mention unfurling of Khalsa flag.
