> Prevent COVID-19 in susceptible individuals.
> Prevent severe COVID-19 infection, thereby reducing the need for hospital admission, ventilation, ICU admission, and death.
> Herd immunity by vaccination.

➡️ How Vaccines Work
> COVID-19 Vaccines have 2 doses, 4 weeks apart. Both doses are necessary for protection from COVID.
> Single dose of vaccine does not impart complete protection against COVID. One can still get infected after 1st dose ---> Why?
3/n
> When the vaccine enters the body, it takes at least 7-10 days for our immune system to launch a reaction against the virus. Hence, receiving the vaccine does not mean immediate protection.
> Vaccine WILL NOT give you COVID-19 infection. Don't be afraid of that.
4/n
> It is imperative that you continue to wear masks and maintain social distancing, regardless of whether you received the vaccine or not. They are our first line of defense against the virus.
5/n
1. Registration* of the beneficiary on the Co-WIN app. 2. Verification of photo ID proof at the vaccination site with that uploaded on the app. 3. Vaccination. 4. 30 mins observation

➡️ Registration for >50 yr old
While the govt has said they'll shortly start the registration process for Phase 2, some cities have already put things in motion.
You can enquire at your nearest PHC regarding registration of those >50 years of age.
> The first aim of vaccine drive is to cover the priority groups.
> AIIMS Director Dr. Randeep Guleria recently said that they hope to make the vaccines available in the open market before the year-end or earlier if possible.

➡️ New Variants and Vaccines
Here is an image from @Medscape explaining, in brief, the mutations of the new variants and their effect.
11/n
> Preliminary data suggest that some of the current vaccines should be adequately effective against the new variants. (SA variant is posing a few difficulties.)
> Efforts are ongoing to make the vaccines more effective against the new variants.
The vaccination drive for COVID19 will soon begin in India.

➡️Different Vaccines, Different Mechanisms
Here's a look at how the major vaccines work -
> Pfizer and Moderna - mRNA
> Oxford/AstraZeneca - Chimpanzee Adenoviral vector
> Bharat Biotech - Inactivated Vaccine
> Zydus Cadila - Plasmid DNA
Some background: Many LMIC member nations, including India, South Africa, are bidding the @wto to waive certain Patent Protections on the @pfizer and @moderna_tx vaccines so that they can manufacture the generic versions of the vaccines on their own for wider distribution.

"It’s not clear developing countries even have the ability to manufacture large-scale, complex technologies like Moderna’s mRNA vaccine or Eli Lilly’s monoclonal antibody cocktail—let alone distribute them."
