CUHK effectively grounded the newly elected student union cabinet for their remarks that “concern national security” and involve “unfounded accusations against the university”, by suspending union fee collection and demanding the SU to register as a social group or company.
Syzygia, the elected SU cabinet of #CUHK, will respond to the university’s statement at midnight.
Issac Lam, chair of the elected SU of #CUHK, said they are "extremely disappointed" by the university's decision to disown the cabinet.
"The university is not only stripping us of our positions, but also stripping over 4,000 students' affirmative votes," he said.
The elected SU cabinet bowed to apologise to their supporters and vowed to stand by their faith.
Former acting SU leader Owen Au said the existing cabinet will pass their power to the elected cabinet as scheduled on 1 March.
CUHK's decision means that elected SU leader Issac Lam (C) will be ousted from the university's council and elected deputy chair Sharie Ho (R) from college administration.
The SU is yet to figure out what they can do without fees paid by 14,000 students and venues on campus.
Elected deputy SU chair Sharie Ho said in a shaking voice that what the SU can do immediately is to issue a joint petition. "I hope CUHK students can show us some support, to show that we have the mandate and we did not do anything wrong," she said as tears welled up.
