JUST IN: White House's J Psaki on #Saudi

• On MBS: US doesn't sanction Gov Leaders in countries it has diplomatic relations with
• Relations recalibrated
• Saudi released 2 dual citizens
• US has interests w Riyadh: intel sharing, defense
• US reserves to take more action
*US reserves right to take more action as relates to #Khashoggi. But basically don't expect sanctioning of Government leaders in Saudi.

No new announcement from US yet on issue. State briefing at 2 pm ET
State Dept. on #Saudi:

• "Considering additional steps" vs Houthis
• Urge Saudi to lift travel ban on released activists inc Loujain
• US support helped Saudi block Houthi missile
• Saudi "hugely influential" country in Arab world
• Seeks end Yemen war, Saudi peace w Israel
This seems to be it for today regarding US statements on Saudi. The announcement that was expected is more of summation of Biden admin. positions and where things stand after release of Khashoggi report on Friday.

Recalibration while avoiding rupture in US-Saudi relationship.

Is it because American director name is Lee Isaac Chung?
+ It won @sundancefest the the US Dramatic Grand Jury prize & US Dramatic audience award.

Large anti- Putin Protests across Russia today, this one from #StPetersburg. Police already detained over 1600 people, and using batons + teargas.

Comes ~ a week after Navalny’s detention:

BREAKING: Gen Lloyd Austin nomination (and waiver) for Defense Secretary passes Senate Armed Services Committee. House is voting at 3 on Waiver.

Austin, first African-American in post, could be confirmed as soon as today by Senate.
House grants waiver for Gen. Austin. Expect a Senate confirmation soon.
JUST IN: Gen Austin crosses 60 vote threshold in Senate for Waiver to serve as Defense Secretary. Full confirmation vote soon.

Interesting that among those who rejected waiver were Senators Duckworth, Gillibrand, and Blumenthal.

An “accidentally cut cable” in #Virginia has accidentally crippled VA whole Voter Registration system on accidentally the last day
Accidentally (not), the first practical lesson I received in Journalism in Lebanon in 2000, was not to use the word “accidentally” without enough evidence.

It was about a story a on local fire. “No such thing as accidentally or coincidentally” my first boss said.
