Today the first ever global specifications for assistive technology designed for low-resource settings is launched. This joint WHO & @UNICEF initiative helps ensure quality hearing, mobility & cognitive aids reach those who need them most.
1 billion people need assistive technology yet only 1 in 10 has access to the product they need. WHO and @UNICEF are working to change this, launching the first global 🌎🌍🌏 specifications for 26 products including wheelchairs 🦽 and hearing aids 🦻:
Assistive devices help children with disabilities attend school and fulfil their full potential. However, poor quality products can do more harm than good. Let's ensure more quality products are available for those who need them.
#HealthForAll can be advanced inclusively only if people are able to access quality assistive products when and where they need them, without facing financial hardship.
The agreement makes use of the multi-partner Humanitarian Mechanism, launched in 2017.
Rotavirus vaccine is the second vaccine to be accessed through the scheme. The first to be made available was the pneumococcal vaccine.
Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhoeal disease in children under 5 years globally, responsible for up to 200,000 child deaths each year.
