PFIZER VACCINE & VARIANTS—Pretty good results for virus neutralization. Testing fully Pfizer-vaccinated people’s blood against spike proteins belonging to pseudo virus of variants—solid neutralization results, albeit slightly lower for #B1351 from South Africa 🇿🇦. 🧵#COVID19
2) “All the serum samples efficiently neutralized USA-WA1/2020 and all the viruses with variant spikes. Almost all of them did so at titers higher than 1:40....” nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
3) “Thus, as compared with neutralization of USA-WA1/2020, neutralization of B.1.1.7-spike and P.1-spike viruses was roughly equivalent, and neutralization of B.1.351-spike virus was robust but lower.”
4) that said, “Neutralizing activity against B.1.351 lineage virus was robust at a geometric mean titer that was **much higher than that obtained after one dose of [Pfizer vaccine]**”.
💡Reassuring! Even if #B1351 neutralization is lower, it’s still good—higher than 1 dose!
5) Other reassuring thing is that despite the #P1 variant having the E484K mutation as #B1351, the vaccine worked pretty solidly for P1 no problem. I’m hopeful similarly results for NIH-Moderna and J&J.
6) Side note—please remind people that none of the #COVID19 vaccines can give you Covid! A lot of people still think so—it’s incorrect!
Neil deGrasse Tyson points out that some states removing mandatory mask mandates is like “having a peeing section of a swimming pool”.... “that’s bad”. #MaskUp#COVID19

Increased mortality for #B117—New study in 🇬🇧 finds 64% higher risk of mortality for #B117 versus previously circulating variants (95% confidence interval 1.32–2.04) in ~55,000 people who tested #COVID19 positive in community. Risks grew after >12 days. 🧵 bmj.com/content/372/bm…
2) In this population, “this represents an increase in deaths from 2.5 to 4.1 per 1000 detected cases.”
3) “The matched cohort design controls for most potential biases, including variations in hospital capacity, as it pairs patients by personal characteristics, geography, and time of testing.” It also adjusted for age.
Engineer Allan J. McDonald, who in 1986 tried to stop the launch of the Challenger space shuttle, citing the effect of the cold on booster rockets, and who, after it broke apart on liftoff, blew the whistle when officials tried to cover, has died at 83. 🙏 nytimes.com/2021/03/09/us/…
2) “During the hearing, Ms. Ride asked Lawrence B. Mulloy, who oversaw the booster rockets for NASA, about rumors of a dissent by Morton Thiokol engineers. Mr. Mulloy conceded that there had been a discussion, but said that the company had ultimately agreed to go ahead....
3) “At that point Mr. McDonald, sitting in the back of the room, stood up. His hands shaking, he told the panel that Mr. Mulloy was not giving them the whole story; the engineers, he said, had been pressured and overruled.
Mr. Rogers immediately asked for the room to be emptied
💡AWESOME FOR BABIES—Experts & new studies suggest pregnant women who recovered from #COVID19 or vaccinated are likely to pass on protective antibodies to fetuses in their womb & to babies via breastfeeding—protects babies both during & after pregnancy.🧵 jpost.com/health-science…
2) “Researchers in Oregon recently analyzed milk samples from a group of six mothers, half of whom received the Moderna vaccine and the other half who received the Pfizer version.
The milk tested negative for antibodies before the mothers were vaccinated, and spiked afterward.”
3) “Breast milk samples were collected pre-vaccination and at 11 additional time-points, with the last sample taken 14 days after the second vaccine dose. No adverse effects were discovered among the babies.”
The pandemic is devastating the world economy—however, good news is US’s Biden stimulus of $1.9 trillion will not only help save US but also help the world. And vaccine rollout is critical.
2) but one major country will likely re-emerge by the end of 2021 back to 2019 GDP growth levels... because of the Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus... and if we keep up the pace of vaccinations.
3) Here is the huge impact of the Biden COVID stimulus. The worry is that Euro zone and Japan might fall behind.
2) Is this pediatric surge in #COVID19 a statistical fluke? No. If we just look at the change from late Feb to first week of March, we still see this consistent surge in kids.
Also, @DavidSteadson notes, while many schools were open, high school grades 10-12 closed in person.
3) And where is the proof that #B117 is surging fast in Sweden 🇸🇪? Here on Swedish Public Health Authority’s website. Circled is Stockholm’s 53% #B117 proportion found in week 8 of 2021. Another region has 60%.
