On Monday Priti Patel wants to rush through a bill in the Commons which will lower the point at which police can intervene. After the appalling police reaction last night at #ReclaimTheStreets #SarahEverard peaceful vigil, we should be extremely concerned theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
But this is not just about #metpolice powers (altho' we need more checks and balances on these). This is about govt wanting to silence "protests". Last yr #PritiPatel branded #BlackLivesMatter protests "dreadful" and called Extinction Rebellion “eco-crusaders turned criminals”
There are many extra powers for police regarding protests, as well as more infringement on human rights which should cause concern in tmrw's Police, Crime Sentencing and Courts Bill. This includes increasing maximum penalty for damage to memorials to 10yrs bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

Meanwhile last Tuesday on BBC Radio 4 Today Programme https://t.co/G7xzUfdm7w
There's been a lot of discussion this week about #BlackLivesMatter demands to "defund the police" without any real understanding of what this means. Nobody is saying police shouldn't exist; what they're saying is that safety and protection is not a priority for all ethnic groups.

The sheer irony of Boris Johnson announcing a cross-government Commission (NOT a govt strategy or plan of action) into “all aspects” of racial inequality in UK when his govt have yet to publish a held-back report on how to save BME lives during a pandemic. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-530453…
Just ystday @RunnymedeTrust had a letter published in @thesundaytimes calling on the govt for MORE ACTION and *less rhetoric* on racial inequalities. How tone deaf do you have to be to ignore the evidence produced by your OWN government on racial inequalities? #BlackLivesMatter ImageImage
If the robust data on racial inequalities across all aspects of life on the govt's OWN website (Ethnicity facts and figures) and from their own reviews (e.g Timpson's review on school exclusions) is not sufficient evidence of racial inequalities, then what is? #BlackLivesMatter

After a year's delay the Windrush Lessons Learned Review (i.e. why the #Windrush scandal happened) is being published tmrw. This was one of the most appalling injustices to happen to BME citizens in this country; please put aside some time to find out why theguardian.com/uk-news/2020/m…
It's been 2yrs since the #Windrush Scandal came to light, but it's hard to forget how ppl like Paulette Wilson, Michael Braithwaite, Anthony Bryan, Albert Thompson & many others lost their livelihoods and were detained even though they had lived here legally for over 50 years.
Priti Patel, discussing the #Windrush Lessons Learning report (WLLR) on bbc.co.uk/iplayer/live/b…. Highlights decades of institutional thoughtlessness. But not once has Home Sec mentioned govt's Hostile Environment policies which significantly contributed to the Windrush injustice.

One nation Tory??? Not for black and ethnic minority ppl. Or Muslim communities. #BBCLeadersDebate
Finally someone gives a damn about the growing inequality. Corbyn reminds the public about child poverty now being over 4.1m under this govt. Here’s a chart on adult and child poverty rates over time thru Labour and Conservative govt #BBCLeadersDebate Image
As a researcher I have to ask why is @bbcnickrobinson letting Boris Johnson ask Corbyn some of the questions?? Johnson’s Q’s are politically motivated but Nick Robinson is continuously letting Johnson dictate questions for Corbyn. That’s really poor questioning. #BBCLeadersDebate

ICYMI the latest stop and search figures were out yesterday. Alarming findings re: liberty & human rights:
💠 Stop and search incl Section 60 (removing reasonable suspicion has *increased* significantly).
💠 Black ppl in London are now 10x more likely to be stopped and searched
Also important to note, that despite this govt's/Priti Patel's reasons for increasing stop and search, arrest rates have *fallen* and 60% of stop and searches are for drugs - *not weapons/knives*. And "intelligence-led policing" has led to increased racial profiling; not decrease
These alarming stop and search stats across Eng & Wales beg many Q's: why is stop & search being increased despite it have little effect on #knifecrime and arrest rates? Why is stop and search (incl Section 60 powers) increasing despite strong evidence of unfair racial profiling?

Thread: The latest statistics about govt's counter-terrorism #Prevent prog are out. Lots of interesting figures but here are some that I think are very troubling: Of the 7,318 ppl (mostly young ppl) referred to Prevent, *only 5%* are actually assessed to require Channel support.
2/How professionals decide *who is a risk* and how #Prevent prog arrives at risk factors is hugely impt. Huge Qs about how accurate the assessment is. Of the 7,318 ppl referred, many young & Muslim, 82% dismissed/referred to non-radicalisn services. But stigmatised either way.
The 95% "misdiagnosis" rate in #Prevent is worrying given that it disproportionately affects young Muslim ppl. Not many ppl realise this, but the way #Prevent is implemented - and its impact - is very similar to #Stopandsearch. It's humiliating and the stigma follows you.
