Yesterday was #InternationalForestDay. It is a day set aside by the @UN to bring global awareness and attention to the significance of forests to the wellbeing of Planet Earth.

The theme for 2021 is “Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well-being”.
The @FAO defines a forest as "land spanning more than 0.5 hectares, with trees higher than 5 meters, and a canopy cover of more than 10 percent, or trees able to reach these thresholds in situ."
#InternationalForestDay
According to @Wikipedia, forests provide a diversity of ecosystem services including:

- converting carbon dioxide into oxygen and biomass
- acting as a carbon sink, making them necessary to mitigate climate change
#InternationalForestsDay
- aiding in regulating climate
- purifying water
- mitigating natural hazards such as floods
- serving as a genetic reserve
- serving as a source of lumber & as recreational areas
- serving as a source of woodlands and trees for millions of people
#InternationalForestsDay
How can we restore our forests?

Forests, all over the world today, are being/have been affected by human activity either directly by destruction or the introduction of invasive species, or indirectly by the impacts of climate change.
#InternationalForestDay2021
Forest restoration is therefore, the process of improving the health, productivity, and array of life of a forest; a complex undertaking that can never fully bring back the original forest. @Wikipedia
#InternationalForestDay2021
1. Planting trees

This is an important part of forest restoration. So many trees have been cut down without replacement, thereby depleting forest resources. Reforestation programmes will need to nurse seedlings and grow native trees.
#InternationalForestDay2021
2. Integrate trees on farms

Farming, whether crop or livestock, has aided the depletion of forest resources because hectares of forests are cleared for farming activities. We can promote the need to keep trees on farms for their numerous benefits.
#InternationalForestsDay
3. Use forests to recover degraded lands

A lot of land has been made almost unusable through mining activities, etc. Here's an opportunity to recover such lands by planting forest trees on them and increasing community/global forest wellbeing.
#InternationalForestDay2021
4. Create awareness

Many rural communities hardly understand the significance of the forests in their community and may have no idea how to protect and/or recover them. You can join well-meaning groups to educate and support rural communities.
#InternationalForestsDay
5. Join the forest advocacy brigade

There are groups of people all over the world fighting to protect and recover the forests. You can join them. Talk about it. Write about it. Defend forest laws. Ensure their implementation. Get involved.
End.

The Horn-Locking Exercise: State Governors versus Herdsmen

The dangerous insecurity experienced nationwide got to a head in Ondo State with a vacation order from the government to all illegal occupiers of the State's forest reserve areas.

#EndInsecurity
@edobong_akpabio
Ondo State has been in the news for months now for the high rate of kidnapping, armed robbery, murder and callous attacks on citizens travelling on the highways, in broad daylight, by criminals hiding in the bushes and forest reserves and suspected to be herdsmen.
#EndInsecurity
The story is the same all over the country - brazen criminals, masquerading as herdsmen attacking, maiming and killing innocent people, even razing down whole communities with impunity. Farmers have been some of the hardest hit, with loss of lives and property.
