D.C. must become the 51st state, and you should care about fighting for it even if you don’t live there. Here’s why and what you can do for #DCStatehood 🧵
For more than 200 years, Washingtonians have had zero voting representation in Congress. D.C.'s mostly Black and brown residents have long been subjected to systemic inequality and denied the full rights of citizenship.
D.C. statehood IS racial justice.
The lack of voting representation for D.C.’s mostly Black and brown residents isn’t a coincidence. It’s right in line with America’s long history of racism and oppression.
The Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965 in an effort to end the widespread and systematic disenfranchisement of Black voters across the United States.
It was extremely effective.
But in 2013, the Supreme Court gutted it. 🧵
In a 5-4 decision in a case called Shelby County v. Holder, the Supreme Court decided that key protections granted in the #VRA were no longer needed, in part because the VRA had so effectively reduced voter disenfranchisement
They gutted a provision called *preclearance.*
Preclearance required jurisdictions with a history of discrimination to obtain approval before changing voting rules.
It acted as a safeguard against lawmakers that sought to disenfranchise voters.
100 days till #ElectionDay. Here are 100 reasons to vote Trump out of office.
1. His policies trap kids in cages 2. He is a white supremacist 3. He’s xenophobic 4. He’s a sexist 5. He’s still trying to repeal Obamacare protections for millions with pre-existing conditions
6. More than 100,000 and counting Americans have died from an avoidable pandemic 7. 220,000+ lies 8. He’s demanded foreign election interference 9. He refuses to release his tax returns 10. He was impeached for soliciting election interference & obstructing Congress
11. Another 4 years of a Trump presidency will harm our nation for decades 12. He has made a habit of firing career public servants who are willing to stand up to him 13. Trump has been accused of sexual assault and harassment by dozens 14. He protects Confederate statues
FACT CHECKS: AG Barr just finished his opening statement.
He has repeatedly lied about the #MuellerReport to protect Trump. Today’s #BarrHearing is no different. He’s lying on national TV. No amount of spin can hide the facts—here are 5 big Barr lies.
SOME BACKGROUND ON STONE: How did he get involved in all of this?
He’s been a friend of Trump’s since the 1980s, when he first tried to persuade Trump to run for president. In 2016, he finally got his wish, serving as an outside adviser and self-described "dirty trickster."
During the campaign, Stone communicated with the two organizations Putin used to alter and leak stolen emails from Clinton and other Dems: Russian Intelligence and Wikileaks.
Stone wrote to Julian Assange during the campaign to request specific stolen emails not yet made public.
According to private Twitter direct messages obtained by The Atlantic, Wikileaks sent Stone a message the morning after Trump won the election that read: "Happy? We are now more free to communicate."
Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has been implicated as an unindicted co-conspirator in a crime.
The walls are closing in: 1. He has been personally implicated in a crime. 2. His campaign has been exposed as a criminal enterprise.
It can’t be overstated how significant this is to happen to a sitting United States president. This hasn’t happened since Nixon before he resigned.
Trump stands accused of directing an illegal conspiracy to benefit his campaign and influence the election.
Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to breaking the law by paying off an adult film actress at the direction of Trump for the purpose of influencing the 2016 election.
Cohen also pleaded guilty to multiple counts of tax evasion and bank fraud.
