“VERY ILL”—many players of the NHL Vancouver @Canucks are “very ill” with #COVID19, some confirmed to have the aggressive Brazil 🇧🇷 #P1 variant. The 14-player outbreak is “unexpected” and the team is in “tough shape”. Practices & games cancelled. BC 🇨🇦 has huge #P1 outbreak. 🧵
2) The 14 @Canucks players with #COVID19 on NHL's COVID Protocol list—Travis Boyd, Thatcher Demko, Jayce Hawryluk, Bo Horvat, Tyler Motte, Tyler Myers and Brandon Sutter joining Alex Edler, Adam Gaudette, Travis Hamonic, Braden Holtby, Quinn Hughes, Zack MacEwen, Antoine Roussel.
3) British Columbia 🇨🇦 is now a world epicenter for the #P1 variant.
4) the outbreak list is now 16 players of the @NHL @Canucks team, plus 3 coaches! More likely positive in coming days.

NHL also doesn’t know what the plans are the for Canucks.
5) If only scientists had done studies and tried to warn about hockey 🏒 being a problematic indoor sport... specifically the ice creates a thermal inversion that keeps the infectious air lingering over the ice!
6) I tried to warn about the impending crisis of #P1 surge in BC 🇨🇦. I’m told the message made its way up the chain in Ottawa. But someone should have acted sooner.
7) BREAKING—Alberta 🇨🇦’s chief medical officer says the Canadian province is investigating a "significant" outbreak involving P.1, the Brazilian #SARSCoV2 variant. Will update soon.

Likely spillover from BC 🇨🇦 where #P1 surging for 2-3 weeks.
8) New report from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 also just reported 102 cumulative cases of #P1.

It seems to have spread across Canada. publichealthontario.ca/-/media/docume…
9) Doctors are now anecdotally reporting that hospitals in BC 🇨🇦 are much more filled with younger #COVID19 cases, really sick, and needing 100% O2.
10) is the patients becoming younger & sicker trend supported by data from Brazil where #P1 originated? Yes... More younger people are dying in Brazil in recent 2021 months than last year.
11) Moreover, there is data in one part of Brazil that didn’t have P1 in January to surging mortality soon with P1– the CFR seemed to be unusually and suddenly shift upwards. And this was analyzed before the worst part of mortality curve in Brazil. Thus, #P1 is maybe more severe.
12) If you are Canadian—Please sign & circulate:

Call to action for all provinces and territories to adopt an explicit goal of #COVID19 elimination & implement effective, financially supported restrictions across #Canada #cdnpoli

#ZeroCovid

zerocovidcanada.org/take-action
13) here is what upset me the most... @CDCofBC had known that #P1 was spreading rapidly. They already knew an outbreak of 84 #P1 in March 22nd that **were not due to international travel**. That should have set off alarm 🚨 bells immediately and triggered action—but they didn’t.
14) The @NHL is going into crisis mode and sent a warning letter out to all hockey teams in its league...
16) MORE DETAILS—

Some players are symptomatic, and a few who are in "rough shape”, some receiving **IV treatments for severe dehydration**, presumably at their homes. many family members of players have tested positive and are experiencing symptoms.
17) "Fatigue, dehydration, the symptoms are intense," one agent of a @Canucks player told ESPN. "It's knocked a lot of guys out. Some can't even get out of bed."

➡️ even young professional athletes can get this sick from #COVID19. Time to wake up!

📍AIRBORNE RESTAURANT TRANSMISSION—3 families—“No close contact or fomite contact identified, aside from back-to-back sitting—Airflow dynamics indicates the infection distribution is consistent with a spread of **long-range transmission of exhaled virus-laden aerosols**”. 🧵
2) It was clearly aerosol airborne transmission— “No sharing of items (e.g., a kettle) was observed between the three tables and no conversations occurred between the three families.”

3) here was the air pattern—“The infection risk was also higher for patrons at zone-ABC tables (red) than those at non-ABC zone tables (χ2 = 25.78, P < 0.001). None of the patrons seated in the non-ABC zone were infected.” Image

Gosh—Over 122,000 🇬🇧 NHS personnel have #LongCovid, out of 1.1 million people in the UK were affected by the condition. What’s the #2 occupational group? 114,000 teachers. Many are unable to work full time because of Long #COVID19 illness & brain fog. 🧵

2) “Patient care is being hit because many of those struggling with long Covid are only able to work part-time, are too unwell to perform their usual duties, or often need time off because they are in pain, exhausted or have “brain fog”.
3) “Ongoing illness can have a devastating impact on individual doctors, both physically and by leaving them unable to work—it puts a huge strain on the health service, which was already vastly understaffed before the pandemic,” said Dr Helena McKeown of British Med Assoc

“Boomers Are Vaccinated and Down to party” is a headline that gives me slight nervousness. The CDC didn’t say visiting all bars/taverns is okay, but people are now doing that—is everyone in a bar or tavern vaccinated & masking & distanced? Doubtful. 🧵

Pray no outbreak. #COVID19 Image
2) To be clear, the latest CDC guidelines say fully vaccinated people can be indoors without masks with someone unvaccinated only in a **SINGLE HOUSEHOLD** in which everyone else is low risk. Thus not house parties or bars/taverns!!! cdc.gov/coronavirus/20… Image
3) the other concern is not just whether if the vaccinated get sick (low likelihood), but rather if they carry the virus asymptomatically and transmit it to someone unvaccinated. For the evidence for this... see this thread 🧵

Let’s be safe not sorry.

Sobering words: “It is increasingly clear that the next few months will be painful... variants are spreading, carrying mutations that make #COVID19 both more contagious & in some cases more deadly.”

Great honest writing by @apoorva_nyc. Stay safe friends.

2) “Even as vaccines were authorized late last year, illuminating a path to the pandemic’s end, variants were trouncing Britain, South Africa and Brazil. New variants have continued to pop up — in California one week, in New York and Oregon the next.”
3) “As they take root, these new versions of the coronavirus threaten to postpone an end to the pandemic.

Why did Canadians respond so passionately to one @Canucks hockey outbreak, but ignored the #COVID19 & #P1 wildfire🔥 that we epidemiologists warned was already burning out of control?

Yes, hockey is big in Canada🇨🇦— but people also can’t empathize with big numbers & statistics.
2) we have known this problem for a long time of course. People relate to stories of people, especially who they know, like the household names of like NHL hockey players. But numbers are just numbers. Numbers & data are cold and unemotional. And that doesn’t get people to act.
3) But what does get people to act? Stories of individual / small scale groups suffering or experiencing a phenomenon. And that’s why stories like the Canucks hockey outbreak is so much resonating than more numbers of people dying or even photos of coffins. It’s sad but true.

Let this sink in—wealthy sports franchise, NHL @Canucks:

—Had >50% of its team #COVID19 sickened

—Many decimated “very ill”

—Despite strict workplace protocols

—Despite big PPE budget

—Despite daily testing

➡️The #P1 variant is just that badass.🧵

2) The @NHL Vancouver @Canucks is looking out of service for a while until they get this #P1 under control. But they may have to revamp everything.

See detailed thread 🧵 below ⬇️
3) And no, most Canadian players are not vaccinated yet due to shortage in Canada 🇨🇦

Here is the NHL letter to all teams today because of the outbreak.
