I've been warned by the operator we may start late. No idea how late.
Here we go!
Wait, false alarm. I heard a non-robotic voice but now back to Vivaldi.
NOW here we go.
Kenney begins with noting Alberta has surpassed 2,000 deaths from COVID-19.
Kenney says he is announcing new measures to combat the spread of COVID-19.
He's currently going over the spread of variants in the province.
"These variants are a real enemy, of public health and of lives," Kenney says.
He says total active cases have jumped 27% in the last week.
Kenney says short term projections show the province is on track to hit a weekly avg. of 2,000 daily cases by the end of April.
"We can expect to see up to 1,000 COVID patients in the hospital by the end of this month," Kenney says, adding it will threaten max capacity of the healthcare system by May.
"The only responsible choice to save lives and to protect our healthcare system is to take action," Kenney says.
NEW: Alberta will be returning to Step 1 of it's reopening plan beginning midnight tonight.
Starting Friday at noon, indoor dining at restaurants will not be allowed. Takeout, curbside pickup and delivery services can continue and outdoor patios will be allowed to stay open for bars and restaurants.
NEW: Vaccine ramp-up strategy, Kenney says there are 3 Steps.
1. Starting Wednesday, all Albertans under Phase 2B will be able to be vaccinated.
2. Rapid Flu Clinics will be set up this week to help with vaccinations.
3. Participating pharmacies will be able to allow for walk-in appointments for vaccinations. Those details still need to be worked out Kenney said
Health Minister Tyler Shandro is currently going over the restrictions in more detail. I'm also working on my file so my tweeting will be spotty.
Here are today’s #COVID19AB stats.
• 931 new cases:
• 10,809 active cases
• 328 in hospital
• 76 in ICU
• 2,001 deaths (+3)
• 9,126 tests completed
• 10.2% positivity
• 676 variants of concern (42.6% of active cases)
Vaccine stats:
• 734,403 doses administered
• 16,608.4 doses per 100,000 people
• 123,272 Albertans fully immunized (2 doses)
We're now on to questions and Kenney says they believe by end of May, around half of Albertans will have some level of protection against COVID-19, either by immunity from getting sick or through vaccines.
The press conference has concluded. That was quite the info dump and I will now be focusing on writing my final file on this #COVID19AB update.
Health-care workers have walked off the job this morning. A sizeable group is outside the Royal Alex and getting lots of honks of support from passing vehicles #yeg#ableg#abhealtb#abpoli
AUPE president Guy Smith is expected to speak in just a few minutes #abhealth
Here’s a list of places where workers have walked out
We’re waiting to get started at the University of Alberta where President David Turpin and Andrew Sharman, vice-president of facilities, and operations will be answering questions about the COVID-19 situation and U of A’s response. #yeg#abpse#abhealth
Here we go. Turpin is starting off with comments on the budget, which is still on the works. $110 million has been cut from their budget, resulting in major changes he said
The cuts are going to have major impacts, Turpin said. Given the numbers going forward they are anticipating layoffs at around the 600 level but they’re working with the govt in the hopes of saving 200-300 jobs
