Big decisions for neutral EU countries like Ireland wary of EU defense capabilities:
EU High Rep Borrell will propose at today's foreign affairs' ministers meeting using the European Peace Facility to finance the supply of "lethal material to the Ukrainian army."
This is what Borrell says ahead of this evening's meeting which begins at 6 pm.
"I will propose to Ministers to use the European Peace Facility for two emergency assistance measures. These aim to finance the supply of lethal material to the heroic Ukrainian army...
...which is fighting with fierce resistance against the Russian invaders and provide urgently needed non-lethal supplies, such as fuel.”
Spoke to senior Ukrainian officials last night—despite the constant conversation about sanctions in the West, the sense was they don't really care; it's too late. The help they want now is munitions.
So pledges this morning from #Macron, the Netherlands for more weaponry will be welcome.
Much of the munitions are likely to come through Poland by land. As per this post by Polish defense minister last night showing a convoy carrying ammunition for #Ukraine
NEW - Statement following emergency #NATO meeting in Brussels.
"Peace on the European continent has been fundamentally shattered. The world will hold #Russia, as well as Belarus, accountable for their actions."
"We will continue to provide political and practical support to #Ukraine as it continues to defend itself and call on others to do the same."
#NATO statement: "We will make all deployments necessary to ensure strong and credible deterrence and defence across the Alliance, now and in the future. Our measures are and remain preventive, proportionate and non-escalatory."
