The Government has today released long-awaited draft of new Environment Bill. 💚🌍📜 This is welcome 👏 - but I see a number of alarming sections. 🤔🚨 A thread. 1/6

1⃣ The environmental principles currently guaranteed under 🇪🇺 law *must* carry the same legal weight as they do now. Draft clauses says Gov't should "have regard to" but we know that leaves too much wiggle room. This must change. 2/6

2⃣ Those key principles won't apply to any public spending decision or 'any other matter' specified by Government - a truly absurd caveat to vital rules protecting our oceans, wildlife and animals. This Get Out of Jail Free card must go. 3/6

There seem to me to be three key paragraphs in the Attorney General's legal advice to the Prime Minister on the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland - the 'backstop - in the Withdrawal Agreement.

Here they are. 1/4

Para 16: The Protocol will "endure indefinitely".

Para 30: The review mechanism does not provide a unilateral route out of the backstop. 2/4

Para 33 (conclusion): There is a legal risk that UK could become stuck in "protracted and repeating rounds of negotiations". 3/4 #Brexit #Art50

Sometimes on days like this when everyone's scrapping around to get heard on the budget it's worth remembering some simple facts.

This is a bit of a thread. #Budget2018

We live in one of the richest nations on earth yet we fail to provide everyone with a roof over their head.

Parents need food banks to put dinner on the table. Most of those parents have a job. #Budget2018

We've gone from being a country of free higher education to one which passes on mountains of debt to the next generation.

A million more kids are set to be in poverty in the coming years. A million. #Budget2018

#IPCC report says limiting warming to 1.5 degrees will require an industrial transition unprecedented in scale - but that it’s possible, if the political will is there - and that the wider opportunities and benefits are huge

So here are a few ideas for our own Government ... 1/6

Advice to Government:

Save money and carbon by stopping actively damaging projects like fracking, airport expansion, HS2, new nuclear, road expansion - and spend it on creating hundreds of thousands of jobs through a rapid expansion of renewables #IPCC 2/6

More advice to Government:

Save even more money and carbon, and create even more jobs by ending subsidies for fossil fuels and taxing them for the damage they cause. Spend that on reducing energy bills through huge nationwide insulation programme.
