Finished a chapter in our online #CallOfCthulhu game last night. 2 investigators, an explorer and a forger, w/ @DDInTheUK1 as the Keeper.
[Thread] They scaled the exterior wall of a mental asylum in the dead of night. Obvs this simple task obviously took ~30 IRL mins to pull off
Now in the cover of the treeline; they painted a large Elder Sign on the perimeter wall. Maybe it would help, maybe it'll go unnoticed for years.
They scurried from the treeline to the lake, then to the secure-wing of the asylum.
A quick stealthy glance revealed just one...
...nurse at her station by the only door. A quick passers-by sob story was concocted and the forger headed in, ready to make an Oscar-winning performance 🎭🏆
The tension in the bizarrely-angry, red-faced nurse, quickly melted away as he drew near. Confusion & wooziness (?!) ...
.. quickly took over the nurse. She quickly slipped into an almost catatonic state. As the forger guided her to a seat and then left to get some water... the anger returned. She was reacting to the presence of the forgers' amulet... an Elder Sign! The horror-beneath couldn't...
.. control her with an Elder sign nearby! A hastily drawn symbol placed in her pocket should keep her safe (for now). The explorer & forger headed into the secure wing & cunningly managed to get another drawn symbol onto the angry baton-waving orderly.
The symbols were working!
No longer controlled by the horror-beneath... the orderly was passive and highly receptive to help. The explorer & forger took his keys, found their friend beaten and battered in his padded cell... and made their escape from the facility...
Torchlights of alerted guards flittered over the grounds behind them. The trio managed to get to the perimeter wall and climb it no problem now (adrenaline, perhaps?). They found their stashed getaway car and made their escape into the night.
Everyone was safe....
...until the story's fade-to-black moment.
Yes the incarcerated friend was saved before their sacrifice at the full moon. However as the lunar event occurred, it became apparent that another helpless victim was found.
The horror-beneath, a lloigor, had claimed another soul
[Summary] This was perhaps our 6th session ran by @DDInTheUK1 for this campaign. The tension, pace and on-the-fly-planning made it a great finale. Obv a success as we saved our friend - but the BBEG continues to thrive at the asylum.
Would you as a PC, prefer locations that are spoken/written in your native tongue (for me, English), or using a language that conveys a more remote distant feeling (for me, Arabic).
Disclaimer - I think the phonetics of Arabic are wonderful and the visual appearance of the script is stunning. I will however translate, use and modify words in my #DnD world, so they are not perfect, good or even true translations. No offence is meant by this.
Eg 2: The large central mountain range:
'The Dragon's Back' or 'Zahar Altanin'
Eg 3: A famous ship wrecked off the southern tip
'Sailor's Grave' or 'Qabr Bihaarn'
Eg 4: The poisonous 2x vents in the volcano
'The Nostrils' or 'Alhaysheem'
I'm writing up a largely sandy island for a #DnD5e campaign 🏝 The island is loosely shaped like a spear head, with a mountain ridge running along what might be seen as the spears ridge / fuller 🗡
I love the phonetic sounds of the Arabic language for this location. I'm currently thinking the island is called internationally as Al 'Ard Ramali. Which roughly translates to The Land of the Spear. Is that too many syllables for a countries name? Does it flow? ⁉
At the very tip of the island (the pointy end), is the capital, a large trading port city that is literally & physically split in two ⚓ It is known for trading in exotic items, precious metals & precious gems. Due to the desert environment that largely covers the island, food...
