TW: sexual assault by police

Police have sexually assaulted me at pilgrimage (when I was 15 years old), at work while I was reporting on a trial in a courthouse (when I was in my 30s), and at protest near Tahrir Square (when I was 44 years old).
Boston Police hid from the public their own evidence in 1995 that one of their officers had sexually assaulted a 12yo. He kept his badge, worked on child sexual assault cases, and became union president. He allegedly went on to molest five other children. bostonglobe.com/2021/04/10/met…
A former detective in Texas suspected of the massacre of his wife, daughter, 17, and an 18yo friend, was ast summer while still a cop, charged with sexually assault & assault by strangulation of his daughter when she was 16. washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/04…
A 2015 study in the U.S. found that, over a 10 year period, an officer was caught in a case of sexual misconduct every five days. buffalonews.com/2015/11/26/sex…
“Some officers coerce street-based sex workers into performing sexual acts to avoid arrest. Relying on law enforcement to respond to sexual violence ignores the reality that many cops are perpetrators of such violence,” teenvogue.com/story/what-hap…
As recently as March, it was not illegal for federal law enforcement officers in the U.S. to "have sex" with people in their custody and claim it was consensual. You can’t consent to sex with someone who is armed and is detaining you! huffpost.com/entry/house-pa…
In the U.K. the Guardian reported on “extraordinary catalogue of sexual misconduct allegations against Metropolitan police officers": 594 complaints against the police service for the Greater London area between 2012 and 2018, of which 119 were upheld. theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/m…
“Black women and women of color who experience gendered violence rarely report to police, because of the systemic misogyny and racism that leads to survivors not being believed or supported,” teenvogue.com/story/8-to-abo…
In the U.S., more than 3/4 of sexual assaults go unreported to police. The 2nd most cited reason that a survivor cites not reporting is they believed police would not do anything to help. nbcnews.com/news/us-news/d…
A study funded by the National Institute of Justice found that only 18% of reported sexual assault cases lead to arrests.

Out of every 1,000 sexual assaults, only 230 are reported to the police, nine cases get referred to prosecutors, and five will result in a prison sentence, according to RAINN, the largest anti-sexual violence organization in the U.S.

And who do the police "protect?"

There is no liberation without queer, gender, and sexual liberation.

For #IDAHOBIT, reposting this from March 6, 2020, when dear friend #Egyptian drag queen Ana Masreya invited me to speak at her show Nefertitties. It was just before our lockdown in #NYC.
May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia.

“No one ever asks men, ‘don’t you think violence against women begets violence?’, because [violence against women is] a normalised and expected violence,”
“But then when I talk about my right to defend myself, when I talk about beating up a man in a club [who sexually assaulted me], people are like...no, no, we shouldn’t be adding violence. I’m like: What do you mean, adding violence?  Violence exists & it exists in those in power”

I'm writing more about being childfree by choice.
When I started saying in public lectures that I was childfree by choice, women would track me down in a corridor, backstage, or in the bathroom to whisper “Thank you. I have never heard another woman say that out loud before.” feministgiant.com/p/unmothering
Most books/essays I have seen about being childfree by choice are written by white cis women. We need to hear from more women of colour and women from different cultural and faith backgrounds as well as trans men and non-binary people who choose to be childfree. I will write more

I FaceTime videod with my parents today to say Happy #Eid I told my dad that in the full throes of #perimenopause I was having allergies —a family tradition. I told him that if I don’t have another period by October I will be free!

“Have a party!” he said.
