[Thread] 1. How does the government decide who gets a vaccination appointment first? It’s first in, first out. So the earlier you register on the EVDS within the category you fall, the sooner you’ll get an sms with a date, time and place. bit.ly/33NeL0s
2. NB to note: You can only register when @HealthZA
tells you to. If you’re not a #HealthWorker or person of 60+, it wouldn’t help to register now. If you live in a crowded setting/you’re 40+, you’ll be the next categories asked to register. bit.ly/33NeL0s
3. Where do comorbidities fit in? For now, you can't get earlier access to jabs if you have a comorbidity. Age and your likelihood of getting infected is used to determine who comes 1st. That’s why we’re starting off with #HealthWorkers and people of 60+. bit.ly/33NeL0s
4. Why are we using age to prioritise vaccinations? Research shows it's the strongest predictor of how likely someone is to end up in hospital or die of #COVID. According to the CDC 80% of #COVID19 deaths occur in people of 65+, and 95% in people 45+. bit.ly/33NeL0s
5. Because many #COVID comorbidities such as #diabetes are more likely to affect middle-aged and older people, a sizable proportion of comorbidities would be covered if older people are vaccinated first. bit.ly/33NeL0s
6. In South Africa, people of 40+ make up the bulk of people living with #COVID comorbidities (such as high blood pressure or diabetes), according to the South African Medical Research Council.bit.ly/33NeL0s
7. Which #HealthWorkers will be vaccinated first this week? Those working in the public sector, says the health department. Then those working at private healthcare institutions and after that those who work from home. bit.ly/33NeL0s
8. #ZweliMkhize said on Sunday all 700 000 #HealthWorkers not covered by #Sisonke will be vaccinated this week. Will that happen? Unlikely. There are just too many challenges. It’s more likely to take two to three weeks. bit.ly/33NeL0s

[Thread] 1. When will our next batch of #Pfizer jabs arrive? At midnight (Sunday): 325 260 doses. How many doses will we have then? 975 780 doses (tonight's batch will first have to get checked by the National Control Lab in Bloemfontein for quality).
2. When will the remaining 700 000 #HealthWorkers not covered by #Sisonke all be vaccinated by? By the end of this week, #ZweliMkhize said tonight (only 1st doses can be given this week - Pfizer needs 2 doses. To vaccinate 700 000 means we need those doses at sites this week).
3. Who will get sms's for #vaccination appointments this week? 7 707 #HealthWorkers and 4 288 citizens of 60 years and older.
[Thread] 1. #ZweliMkhize: The Sisonke programme is now finished. 478 733 doses of 500 000 doses were used. The leftover doses will be used by the SAMRC to conduct studies (HIV, people with comorbidities, pregnant women, etc). The doses can't be used for Phase 2.
2. #ZweliMkhize: We will receive another just over 300 000 #Pfizer doses by tomorrow morning. This will bring our total number of #Pfizer doses to 975 780.
3. #ZweliMkhize: We will have vaccinated 5 million people by the end of June, provided that the vaccine supply flow as anticipated. By the end of June we will have 4.5 million #PFizer doses and 2.2 #JandJ doses.
[Thread] 1. What can a #CovidVaccine site (e.g. Dischem) charge for? This health dpt memo, that was sent to providers + published by B4SA (businessforsa.org/wp-content/upl…), says:
* #Pfizer: R354.75 (R308,48 + VAT) per dose
* #JandJ: R330.00 (R286,96 + VAT) per dose
* R70 admin fee/dose
2. The #CovidVaccines arrive at sites in multi-dose vials. What do these cost?
* #Pfizer (you need 2 doses, 21 days apart): There are 6 doses in a vial, so a vial costs R1 850,88 [without VAT]
* #JandJ: There are 5 doses in a vial; so a vial costs R1 434,80 [without VAT]
3. Can a provider ask you to pay for the R70 #CovidVacine administration fee at the counter? NO. They have to bill your medical aid (if you're insured) or the government (if you're not insured) directly.
[Thread] 1. Why did the #Sisonke trial researchers broaden the definition of #HealthWorkers who can get vaccinated and are people using it to jump the queue (so are non-health workers queuing up to get vaccinated)?
2. The #JandJ doses for the #Sisonke study are research doses specifically donated to vaccinate trial participants (#HealthWorkers). The trial ends on 15 May and unused doses would have to be returned to J&J.
Source: Keith Cloete, WC health dpt
3. Because #Sisonke doses can only be used for the trial, leftover doses can't be given to Phase 1B (#HealthWorkers not covered by Sisonke) or Phase 2 (people of 60+) of the roll-out. Sisonke either has to use the doses/return leftover ones.

[Thread] 1. VACCINE ROLL-OUT UPDATE from the Western Cape: Keith Cloete, the head of the WC health department says the province today received just over 30 000 doses of the 1st batch of (325 260) Pfizer #CovidVaccines that arrived in SA on May 2.
2. .@WestCapeHealth expects to receive #JandJ jabs from May 28. Deliveries of both #Pfizer + J&J will be made each week (the nr of doses will increase with time — in line with national deliveries: SA will get 300 000 Pfizer doses each week in May and 600 000+ each week in June).
3. What will the 30 000 #Pfizer jabs in the WC be used for? To vaccinate #HealthWorkers not covered by the Sisonke trial and people of 60+ in old-age homes. So phase 2 (people of 60+) will start off in old-age homes, not at individual sites. When? Monday, 17 May.
[Thread] 1. LATEST on #COVID19SA cases: 1. There was a 46% increase in new cases when the weeks of April 26th + May 3rd are compared. 2. Cases in all provinces increased in the last 7 days:

- Gauteng: 63%
- Limpopo: 47%
- North West: 42%
- Western Cape: 39%
2. #Covid19SA deaths increased by:
* 18.22% when the weeks of April 26th and May 3 are compared
