[Thread] 1. Is #VaccineRolloutSA moving fast enough to consume the jabs that SA will receive over the next 5-6 weeks? To answer that, we need to look at how many jabs we’ll have and how many daily vaccinations we would need to do to use the shots.
2. How many jabs will we (likely) have for the next 5-6 weeks?
* Business SA on Fri said we'll have 3 mil #JandJ doses by the end of June (if the FDA authorises the release of the jabs in time)
* 4.5 mil #Pfizer doses by the end of June (#Mkhize announced this in May)
3. Business SA/health dpt calculated:
* For the wk of May 17 we needed to do 54 200 vaccinations/day
* For the wk of May 24 we need to do 109 200 vaccinations/day
* For the other weeks until the end of June we need to do 192 500 vaccinations/day
(this is based on 6 days/wk)
4. How many #Pfizer doses have we given so far?
May 17/18: 39 371
May 19: 38 134
May 20: 39 236
May 21: 44 976
May 22: 564
May 23: 5 037
May 24: 4 542 (the nr of jabs done on Sun)
TOTAL: 171 860
Average jabs per/day for the wk of May 17 = 24 551 (we needed 54 200/day).
5. #VaccineRolloutSA SA is thus behind on its goals. What do we need to do to catch up?
* Week of May 24: We need to do 4.5X more vaccinations/per day (109 200) than the week of May 17
* Week of May 31: We need to do 8X more vaccinations (192 500) than in the week of May 17
6. What do we need to scale up?
* More open sites, vaccinators
* Jabs must be delivered on time
* Enough needles, syringes, swabs
* Sites have to be open at least 1 weekend day (targets are based on vaccinations 6 days/wk)
* A functional booking system
* Efficient comms
7. So what are we doing?
* Each week day last week, we improved on vaccination nrs (the weekend day nrs were low).
* The almost 45 000 jabs we administered on Thu is close to 2X what we did on any day of the #Sisonke study.
* We'll only get nrs for Mon (May24) this evening.
8. These @mediahackza graphs show the pace at which SA's #vaccinations has increased between mid-February and mid-May.
9. In the week of May 17, we started with 87 sites + closed with 258 sites, according to @healthza stats (not all sites operated each day, see slide for provincial breakdown). By Fri +/- 1800 sites had received permits to operate. (No @HealthZA info yet for nr of sites this wk).
10. Some of the new private sites that opened this week:
* 9 Mediclinic sites:
* Discovery is opening a 2nd site in its Sandton building, there's already one site in the building
11. How long does it take to train vaccinators? According to a Business SA webinar, vaccinators (nurses) do an online course that takes a few hours to complete. How many vaccinators have we trained so far? We don’t know. @healthza hasn’t released recent data.
12. How well is our EVDS working? There are glitches. Some people have received appointment dates, but many don’t understand why they haven’t received anything. As a result many people go to sites without appointments asking to be helped (and many are helped) - also this week.
13. @healthza says a 2nd #Pfizer dose will be given 42 days after the 1st one, but many people who got vaccinated received a text message/appointment card with a 2nd appointment date for 21 days after their 1st dose.
14. Only #HealthWorkers or people of 60+ should currently register on the EVDS. @healthza says the system will calculate ages from ID nrs and kick people younger than 60 out. But over the weekend some people younger than 60 managed to register:
15. Last week, some people with booked appointments turned up at sites that took walk-ins and were then turned away, because the sites were “full”. That needs to stop.
16. Good news is that @sahpra has approved new, easier storage conditions for #Pfizer jabs which will likely lead to faster and cheaper administration, because thawed jabs can now be stored in fridges for six times longer than before. bit.ly/34aGVmg
17. We need better comms from @healthza. People are confused about who will be prioritised for vaccination and which sites are open. Hopefully, the @healthza’s COVID dashboard, that they said would go live on Monday (it didn’t), will address that.
18. How many #HealthWorkers and people of 60+ have registered on the EVDS? By Monday afternoon:
* 2 763 992 people in total
- Health workers = 958 502
- 60+ = 1 805 490
19. Perhaps the most useful tips for comms are from @healthza’s own #COVID report of May 24:
* Clarify the plan for #Phase2
* Be honest
* Build trust via the release of consistent, daily updates of sites, doses that arrived, etc (and respond to journos' requests for info)

[Thread]1. LATEST #VaccineRolloutSA stats:
* 282 135 #Pfizer 1st doses by Tue 23:59pm
* What does this tell us about the pace at which we're vaccinating?
- The pace is picking up:
* Mon = 49 276 doses
* Tue = 60 999 (282 135 - 221 136 = 60 999), so on Tue 19% more than on Mon
2. Is the pace at which we're vaccinating fast enough to reach the goals @HealthZA has set? Not yet.
* Health dpt goals = 109 200 vaccinations per day for the week of May 24
* We reached 45% of this goal on Mon and 56% of the goal on Tue
3. What does the provincial distribution of #VaccineRolloutSA look like? @Bhekisisa_MG created this map to make it easy to understand. (The figures are from Mon, because @HealthZA hasn't yet released provincial figures for Tue): 1. KZN: 80 121 2. GT: 49 548 3. EC: 26 232
[Thread] 1. Five @Dischem#VaccineRolloutSA sites will open in Gatueng on Tuesday, May 25 (in addition to the Midrand site that opened on May 17):
1. Centurion
2. Mall of the South
3. Jabulani
4. East Rand Mall
5. Fourways Mall
2. The 5 @Dischem#VaccineRolloutSA sites are not based at Dis-Chem pharmacies, they're in malls (look out for posters and signage). Dis-Chem expects @HealthZA to deliver vaccine stock on Mon, which is why they're only opening on Tu (no deliveries = made over weekends for now).
3. Can you just turn up at a Dis-chem #VaccineRolloutSA site this week? NO. Dis-Chem says it will only help people who:
* Have registered on the EVDS
* Arrive with an EVDS voucher with a date, place + time
* Bring their ID + medical scheme membership (if applicable)
[Thread] 1. How does the #EVDS decide which site to send you to? It uses the address you entered when you registered. In cities it will assign you a site within 10kms of that address and in rural areas it will allocate a site within 30kms of the address. bit.ly/3ypvQM6
2. Can you currently register on the #EVDS if you’re not a #HealthWorker or someone of 60+? No. The system will automatically calculate your age from your ID nr, and unless you say you’re a health worker, not allow you to register. bit.ly/3ypvQM6
3. If you don’t have an ID and enter your age manually on the #EVDS, site officials are supposed to ask you for proof of your age or employment as a #HealthWorker before vaccinating you. (But there have been reports that this doesn't happen at some sites.) bit.ly/3ypvQM6
[Thread] 1. How does the government decide who gets a vaccination appointment first? It’s first in, first out. So the earlier you register on the EVDS within the category you fall, the sooner you’ll get an sms with a date, time and place. bit.ly/33NeL0s
2. NB to note: You can only register when @HealthZA
tells you to. If you’re not a #HealthWorker or person of 60+, it wouldn’t help to register now. If you live in a crowded setting/you’re 40+, you’ll be the next categories asked to register. bit.ly/33NeL0s
3. Where do comorbidities fit in? For now, you can't get earlier access to jabs if you have a comorbidity. Age and your likelihood of getting infected is used to determine who comes 1st. That’s why we’re starting off with #HealthWorkers and people of 60+. bit.ly/33NeL0s
[Thread] 1. When will our next batch of #Pfizer jabs arrive? At midnight (Sunday): 325 260 doses. How many doses will we have then? 975 780 doses (tonight's batch will first have to get checked by the National Control Lab in Bloemfontein for quality).
2. When will the remaining 700 000 #HealthWorkers not covered by #Sisonke all be vaccinated by? By the end of this week, #ZweliMkhize said tonight (only 1st doses can be given this week - Pfizer needs 2 doses. To vaccinate 700 000 means we need those doses at sites this week).
3. Who will get sms's for #vaccination appointments this week? 7 707 #HealthWorkers and 4 288 citizens of 60 years and older.
[Thread] 1. #ZweliMkhize: The Sisonke programme is now finished. 478 733 doses of 500 000 doses were used. The leftover doses will be used by the SAMRC to conduct studies (HIV, people with comorbidities, pregnant women, etc). The doses can't be used for Phase 2.
2. #ZweliMkhize: We will receive another just over 300 000 #Pfizer doses by tomorrow morning. This will bring our total number of #Pfizer doses to 975 780.
3. #ZweliMkhize: We will have vaccinated 5 million people by the end of June, provided that the vaccine supply flow as anticipated. By the end of June we will have 4.5 million #PFizer doses and 2.2 #JandJ doses.
