[Thread]. 1. Where are we at with #VaccineRolloutSA?
* People who had received 1 #CovidVaccine dose by 7 Jun = 1, 524, 589
* Of those, only 31% (479 768), have been fully vaccinated (they got a #JnJ jab via #Sisonke)
* The rest (1, 043 278) have received the 1st of 2 #Pfizer jabs
2. Here’s a summary of our #VaccineRolloutSA figures so far:
* Total doses = 1, 524, 589
* Total #Pfizer 1st doses = 1, 043 278
* Nr of #Pfizer doses given on Mo, 7 Jun = 82 641 (this is the highest nr of daily doses so far)
3. Where do the 1, 524, 589 doses SA had given by 7 Jun place us in #Africa? @mediahackza tracks 51 countries, SA is 4th:
1. Algeria: 2, 500, 000
2. Nigeria: 2, 225, 765
3. Ethiopia: 1, 856, 968
4. SA: 1, 524, 589

[Thread] 1. When will we hear if Aspen can release SA’s #JandJ jabs from their Gqebera plant and why can’t the country itself just give the go ahead? @healthza’s Nicholas Crisp says the #FDA has told him they’ll make an announcement on Fri (tomorrow).
2. The FDA can decide:
1. Our #JandJ jabs haven’t been contaminated + can be released.
2. Some batches are fine, some not. Only some can be released.
2. All jabs = contaminated +can’t be used.
3. Our jabs can't be used the US, but Sahpra can decide if we can use them in SA.
3. Why is the #FDA making this decision and not SA? Because Aspen has a contract with #JandJ and a US factory which manufactured the key ingredient (API) for our jabs is being investigated by the FDA.

[Thread] 1. Is #VaccineRolloutSA moving fast enough to consume the jabs that SA will receive over the next 5-6 weeks? To answer that, we need to look at how many jabs we’ll have and how many daily vaccinations we would need to do to use the shots.
2. How many jabs will we (likely) have for the next 5-6 weeks?
* Business SA on Fri said we'll have 3 mil #JandJ doses by the end of June (if the FDA authorises the release of the jabs in time)
* 4.5 mil #Pfizer doses by the end of June (#Mkhize announced this in May)
3. Business SA/health dpt calculated:
* For the wk of May 17 we needed to do 54 200 vaccinations/day
* For the wk of May 24 we need to do 109 200 vaccinations/day
* For the other weeks until the end of June we need to do 192 500 vaccinations/day
(this is based on 6 days/wk)

[Thread]. 1. This morning @ZweliMkhize announced that the Sisonke trial, which uses #JohnsonandJohnson’s #COVID19 jab, will resume on Wednesday. So what happens now?
2. Up until now, the Sisonke trial has vaccinated about 300 000 #HealthWorkers. @SAHPRA1 paused the trial in April, after the FDA/CDC in the US temporarily halted its #JandJ roll-out due to the occurrence of 8 rare blood clotting disorders among about 7 million vaccinated people.
3. None of the blood clots that occurred in the US, occurred in SA's Sisonke trial (likely because it’s so rare and we’ve only vaccinated about 300 000 people vs. the US’s 7 mil). The US unpaused its #JandJ roll-out on Fri after the FDA cleared the jab. bit.ly/2PsRgGA

[Thread] 1. The two jabs — #JohnsonandJohnson and #Pfizer — that SA will (so far) use in its national #CovidVaccine roll-out have now both been approved for use by our regulator, @SAHPRA1. So what now — when will you get your jab?
2. The next batch of J&J jabs (200 000) will arrive on 10 April. But these #CovidVaccines are for use in SA's Sisonke trial (our implementation study) and only #HealthWorkers can be vaccinated with them. They can’t be used for our wider, national roll-out.
3. Our 1st commercial batch — 1 million J&J jabs — will land in the 3rd/4th wk of April. The diffs between this batch + the Sisonke jabs: we’re paying for this batch + can use it outside of a research setting. The Sisonke jabs came for free but we can only use them for the study.

[Thread] 1. SA will be getting Pfizer jabs to use in #VaccineRolloutSA. Those jabs need to be stored in special freezers at -70 degrees Celsius. We don't have many of those freezers. So how will SA cope?
2. #Mkhize: Pfizer is sending its #CovidVaccines to SA in packaging that allows for the jabs to remain stable for a certain period until they get to a freezer. We've also had companies offering us access to the special freezers required so we can store the jabs safely.
3. Here's more background on the challenges with maintaining the cold chain with Pfizer jabs (some of these challenges have now been addressed with packaging that keeps the jabs at the right temp and more freezers that have become available). bit.ly/3q8UFHs

#Mkhize: The process of Aspen (in SA) filling and packing Johnson&Johnson #CovidVaccines is going well. We anticipate they will have their first batch ready in March. They need to hold manufactured stock for a month (safety procedure) before it can be released.
#Mkhize: Aspen says they want to serve SA and make Johnson&Johnson vaccines available to the country. But it's J&J who decides if, and how many, of the vaccines packaged by Aspen in SA our country can get.
#Mkhize: J&J has told me they're committed to making their #CovidVaccines available to SA. (On Sunday, principal investigator Glenda Gray said J&J will make an announcement about this later this week).

#Mkhize: [Thread] We want to use the best #CovidVaccine for SA. The #501YV2 variant has impacted on the efficacy of jabs. The results showing the impact on the #astrazenecavaccine only became available on Fri. We now know it doesn't prevent mild/moderate #COVID19 disease in SA.
#Mkhize: Government's process of procuring the #AstraZenecaVaccine started before the new results on lack of efficacy in South Africa became available.
#Mkhize: The public has concerns about the expiry date of the #AstraZenecaVaccine. The vaccine has not expired yet. The doses would have been used up by the April expiry date with our original #VaccineforSouthAfrica roll-out strategy.
