A wee thread about how people in power can subconsciously try to diminish voices of others. Last night when I was sitting with @punchedfaceguy, chatting w the sheriffs who patrol the legislative grounds, one of them used the phrase: “twitter isn’t real life.” 1/

#Ableg #Abpoli
It was in the context of asking Albert "why are you doing this? What’s the point? Who will hear you?” Albert tried to explain: even if few people were ON the grounds to see him all night, there were still plenty of people watching/supporting online & it was important to him. 2/
The sheriff (who was, incidentally, very respectful, and simply doing his his job) was a bit perplexed and said something along the lines of “Edmonton has over a million people. How many people can really be online knowing about you – I mean, twitter isn’t real life.” 3/
I shrugged and responded. “I mean, this IS real life, because I met this guy through twitter, and now I’m sitting here in front of you.” Alive, in person, right there. I talked about the thousands of Albertans watching political debate online. ONLINE is the current arena. 4/
Later, when they left, I told Albert it was interesting I’d heard/seen certain UCP folks & people in my circles (mostly conservative supporters) use this very phrase: “twitter is not real life.” It seems an easy thing to say when you don’t like what you’re hearing on here. 5/
Around 7 million Canadians (of ~38 million) use twitter. About 6 million Canadians are under 14 so if we don’t count them, that’s about 22% of Canada using twitter. Give or take. Facebook is higher, at 19 million Canadian users. Here are a few interesting stats. 6/
Of course I understand when I’m speaking with someone online, I’m not SPEAKING to them face to face, so in that sense, the sheriff was right. But to dismiss ‘social media users’ as not being ‘real life’ is shortsighted & I believe it’s a tactic used to silence/undermine voices 7/
Very real social and political movements have started online in the past couple of years, some of them spilling out into the streets and marches, others existing mainly online, but many resulting in real public awareness and change in either case. 8/
When I chatted about it with Albert, he wryly said “two words. Donald Trump.” EXACTLY. The man lived out his unfathomable presidency via live-tweet, and while it was painful and horrible to watch, it was REAL LIFE, reflected online. For better or worse, this is where we are. 9/
Even aside from political or other activism, twitter has resulted in REAL LIFE friends for me. I have met up with dozens of you in person after only meeting on this platform, and have gone on to have ongoing, longterm, in-person friendships. I’m so very grateful! 10/
I DO recognize the echo chambers this platform (and others) can & do create. I recognize the difficulty of conversing on here, and I FAR prefer to dialogue face to face. As much as possible, for many reasons. Nevertheless, I’ve had real and important conversations here, too. 11/
PLUS, the whole world is now able to connect instantly, in ways previously unknown to humankind. This has its drawbacks, of course, & we’ve seen many of them in the past 15 months/4 years. But it also has its advantages, and we should not discount those. 12/
To summarize: I think it’s important to recognize these casual comments for what they are– an attempt to discredit individuals & grassroots groups who organize at this level. Social media is here to stay, like it or not, and it most certainly IS part of real life. -fin

Exactly one year ago today, I was enjoying brunch at OEB with this beauty, my dear friend Amanda. (Remember restaurants?) Near the end of the meal, I began to experience intense abdominal cramping. The pain was unreal. I excused myself & almost passed out in the bathroom. 1/
I managed to make it back to the table, but had to lie down on the bench seat while Amanda sprang into action, calling the restaurant manager over, explaining the situation, telling him my car was parked outside but she needed to take me in her car. I was adamant- no ambulance.
I thought it was the chemo I was on, told her just to take me home. The pain meds would solve this, I thought. Just bring me home to my pain meds. I lay in her back seat. It was so excruciating, when she asked me for my husband's phone number I couldn't even speak to tell her. 3/

Ooooooooh this gal’s got her rant on TONIGHT!! Careful now! Thread ahead!

*deep breaths.*

I just saw this post from #CPC MP Rachael Harder (Lethbridge.)

Hi, Rachael- I don’t think you’re on twitter anymore, but I’d like to chat.

#AbHealth #AbPoli #CdnPoli 1/
What I see from your Facebook post is the following. I’d like to clarify.

So of the 471 deaths so far in Alberta only 10 of them MATTER to you because everyone else had preexisting conditions?
2/
Let me tell you something, Ms. Harder. I’m a 38 year old woman, with an 11 year old son and 14 year old stepson. My husband & I have a beautiful life.

I am four years older than you are. This is my family. We adore each other.

Watching question period, just heard @rebeccakschulz say, re: AISH, "I would encourage the members opposite to quit playing politics with vulnerable Albertans."

Are you KIDDING US, Minister Schulz? The UCP has been "playing politics" with vulnerable Albertans since election day.
In fact I cannot REMEMBER a government at ANY level that has done as much gaslighting and projection about their own actions

-You messed up AISH payments, as predicted, when you moved dates.
-You're screwing over patients with your STAMP program.
-AB children at risk in school.
-Students have to pay more tuition.
-EVERYONE has to pay higher insurance rates cause you got rid of the cap.
-Seniors with dependents were screwed over with your drug plan.
-You are undermining our public health system.
-You are undermining our education system.

"There was never any goodbye. He was just gone. It’s like the world swallowed him up. We could only have 10 people at the funeral, and I didn’t make that list. I break down sometimes, but mostly I’m empty." 1/

washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/10…
"Am I glad to be alive... I don’t know how to answer that. There’s no relief. This virus, I can’t escape it. It’s torn up our family... How many people would have gotten sick if I’d never hosted that weekend? One? Maybe two? The grief comes in waves, but that guilt just sits." 2/
Me talking now. Look- I don't live my life in fear. I don't make decisions based on fear. Fear honestly isn't a familiar or common part of my life, for the most part. But compassion, connection, community and family are all part of my life. This is what I'm passionate about. 3/

Just a wee thread on what it means to "vote with your wallet." Let's just talk about this like rational humans, yes?

There's a lot of discussion out there about "the list." I understand both sides of this discussion, because I agree to a point with people on both sides of it.
On one hand, is it immature & unnecessarily punitive to “punish” a small business owner for their political affiliations? It probably is.

On the other hand, when government in question is being immature & unnecessarily punitive, does a boycott make sense? I would argue yes.
There’s also free market at play in all of this. Do we have the right to know and therefore choose where our money is going? Yeah, we do. Boycotting companies and ‘voting with your wallet’ has long been a common technique, for WAY more reasons than political affiliation.

Funny, @MattWolfAb: I don’t recall the #UCP running on this platform?
-undermining & demonizing Alberta physicians, attempting to privatize health care system, driving doctors elsewhere
-harassing & demeaning teachers, firing 25,000 educational staff IN A WEEKEND EMAIL #abPoli
-A corrupt, kamikaze candidate leadership race (still under RCMP review?)
-Arbitrarily changing AISH dates carelessly, sending payments late, causing hardship for vulnerable AISH recipients
-Changing PUF finding model, leading to anxiety for parents with children who need it
I don’t recall the party promising to
-remove insurance premiums cap, leading to more expenses for Alberta drivers (17% higher?!)
-slashing post-secondary education grants, removing tuition freeze, creating additional cost for post-secondary students #AbLeg
