Memorial Day (Thread)

Memorial Day, formally known as Decoration Day, was originally started by a group of African Americans.

The holiday was initially an event held by newly liberated Black people in Charleston, South Carolina.

#MemorialDay
On May 1, 1865, at the end of the Civil War, thousands of newly freed slaves and regiments of the U.S. Colored Troops gathered to march around a Confederate Army prison camp in honor of the unnamed fallen Union soldiers who fought for their freedom.

#MemorialDay
African Americans were erased from the story of Memorial Day by white Democrats after they regained control of state politics at the end of Reconstruction.

A day that originally celebrated Black liberation was highjacked by white supremacists.

#MemorialDay
The spirit of the first Decoration Day was to commemorate the struggle for Black liberation and the fight against racism.

It was unfortunately whitewashed into the modern "Memorial Day.”

#MemorialDay
In the spirit of our ancestors who saw the end of the Civil War with an emancipationist vision that included radical reconstruction, the annihilation of racism, and Black liberation, today, I celebrate the heroes and heroines who died in the struggle for freedom.

#MemorialDay
We remember 2 million Africans who died during the "Middle Passage" across the Atlantic and millions more who died during the march to or confinement along the coast. We remember the millions who lived and died in bondage in the worst form of slavery in history.

#MemorialDay
We remember the Underground Railroad freedom fighters, including but not limited to:

Harriet Tubman
Henry 'Box' Brown
John Parker
Margaret Garner
Rev. John and Jean Rankin
Robert Smalls
William Still
Frederick Douglass

#MemorialDay
We remember the martyrs who lost their lives in the struggle during the Civil Rights Movement:

Rev. George Lee
Lamar Smith
Emmett Till
John Earl Reese
Willie Edwards Jr
Mack Charles
Herbert Lee
Cpl. Roman Ducksworth Jr
Medgar Evers
Addie Mae Collins

#MemorialDay

Carol Robertson
Cynthia Wesley
Virgil Lamar Ware
Henry Hezekiah

#MemorialDay
We remember brave pioneers who fought for our freedom across the diaspora:

Martin Luther King Jr
Malcolm X
Nelson Mandela
Steve Biko
Fannie Lou Hamer
Mary Church Terell
Richard Allen
Ida B. Wells
Ella Baker
Shirley Chisolm
Marcus Garvey
W.E.B. Dubois

Eric Garner
Aiyana Jones
Keith Lamont Scott

#MemorialDay
We remember the brothers and sisters like my Uncle Halbert, who died for an ungrateful nation that treated them like second class citizens.

We remember those like my daughter Talyn, who serves a nation that has to consistently be reminded that #BlackLivesMatter .

Meet Cornelius Ennis, Tucker Carlson’s 3x great grandfather.

He was a SLAVE OWNER, cotton shipper, railroad exec, and Mayor of Houston. Ennis, TX is named for him.

During the Civil War he was a blockade runner for the Confederacy.

White supremacy is in @TuckerCarlson’s DNA.
According to the TX State Historical Association, Mayor Cornelius Ennis was was born in 1813 in NJ, same as @TuckerCarlson’s 3x great grandfather. His family came to NJ from Ireland, same as Carlson‘s family. He married Jeanette Kimball, name of Carlson‘s 3x great grandmother.
The 1860 Census Slave Schedule shows @TuckerCarlson‘s 3x great grandfather, Cornelius Ennis, former mayor of Houston, blockade runner for the Confederacy, and man for whom Ennis, TX is named, as the owner of at least 16 slaves in Harris, TX. He also owned slaves in Louisiana.

Learn your history wypipo, you are the original rioters.

You didn’t riot because you were being unjustly murdered, you rioted to subjugate Black people.

You destroyed entire towns because Black people were becoming too prosperous.

You lynched and murdered us by the thousands.
The East St. Louis Massacre was sparked by the fear of Black men migrating from the South to factories in the North and taking jobs from white people. Wypipo murdered hundreds of Black people and destroyed the town. It launched what is known as ‘Red Summer.’
It was called ‘Red Summer,’ but was actually 6 consecutive years of racist violence, murder, and destruction wypipo exacted upon Black people for having the audacity to build their own communities.

It was during this time the all-Black town of Rosewood, Florida, was destroyed.

It is being reported that the shooter is a 17 year old who drove to #Kenosha from Antioch, Illinois with an AR-15 looking for trouble. He murdered 2 people and wounded a man who will lose his arm as a result.

Where is @realDonaldTrump complaining about outside agitators?
The vitriolic, divisive, and violently racist fear mongering rhetoric at the #RNCConvention was a call to arms that inspired this act of mass MURDER.

Blood is on the hands of 46-1, his family, and the #GOP.

This week in Policing (Kenosha, WI) @KenoshaPolice

#KyleRittenhouse, ARMED white boy who MURDERED 2 people—ARRESTED.

#JacobBlake, UNARMED Black man who broke up a fight— SHOT IN THE BACK 7 TIMES.

This is policing in America in Black-and-white.

This is Christian Walker. He was trained well on how to be a foot shuffling bootlicker by his famous white supremacy apologizing father #HerschelWalker.

For the record Christian:

4,529 women were RAPED by WHITE men last week. 13% of raped women attempt suicide.

121 WHITE people were MURDERED by WHITE men last week. 89% of murdered white people are killed by white people.

54% on welfare are WHITE women. WHITE people without a college degree 18 to 64 are the largest class lifted out of poverty by so called ‘entitlement’ programs.

2/5
60% of deadbeat dads are WHITE men. Because a Black man is not married to the mother of his children doesn’t mean he’s a deadbeat. 59.5% of black men live with their children. Statistically they’re more involved in the lives of their children than their white counterparts.

To hell with all of you, including Black people, who use ‘Black on Black crime’ to deflect from police brutality, the extra judicial murder of Black people, and systemic racism in America.

It’s an invalid argument.

It’s disingenuous.

It’s racist.

It’s disgusting.

1/5
So-called ‘Black-on-Black crime’ isn’t a valid argument against criticizing police brutality.

When white people use it, what they’re basically saying is, “you kill each other, why can’t we kill you?“

They never deal with injustice, they just deflect from it.

2/5
Black people care about crime within their communities and racism in the criminal justice system. We don’t have to choose one or the other to be vocal about.

Crime perpetrated by criminals is different than sworn police officers murdering innocent prople.
