October is breast cancer awareness month. You have probably seen the pretty little pink ribbons.

But it is important to say that breast cancer is not pretty.

An ugly thread #bcsm #BCAM /1
Some persons, through absolutely no fault of their own, present with metastatic disease.

In some persons, through absolutely no fault of their own, breast cancer comes back in another part of their body. #bcsm #bcam /2
Persons with zero risk factors are diagnosed with the disease. It does not matter if you do not have a family history. It does not matter if you faithfully do your mammogram (mammos detect early, they don’t prevent). #bcsm #bcam /3

KAITLIN randomized patients after adriacymycin/cyclophosphamide to either paclitaxel/trastuzumab/pertuzumab or TDM-1/pertuzumab.
#bcsm
The two arms were nearly identical for primary endpoint IDFS, subsequently a “ negative “ trial. This trial raises all sorts of questions and controversies. Based on TRAIN-2, the administration of anthracycline to all patients likely could have been avoided #bcsm
Additionally, we have little data about the specific benefits of adding pertuzumab to TDM-1. #bcsm

America,
In WW1, America lost 116,516 people, with over half (63,114) of those deaths attributed to influenza/disease rather than combat. I know these figures because #KansasCity is home to the remarkable the National WW1 museum. You should visit when this is all over.

But as I watch the numbers unfold and read the predictions, I can’t help but wonder—where will the international COVID19 memorial be located? New York? They already currently have 1552 #COVID19 deaths.
On September 11 there were 2,997 victims /2 Image
Because at this grim moment in history, projections suggest 100,000 to 240,000 Americans will die. #COVID19 /3

Important research on supplements during chemotherapy #bcsm /1
There were indications that use of any antioxidant supplement (vitamins A, C, and E; carotenoids; coenzyme Q10) both before and during treatment was associated with an increased hazard of recurrence (adjusted hazard ratio [adjHR], 1.41; 95% CI, 0.98 to 2.04; P = .06) /2
Relationships with individual antioxidants were weaker perhaps because of small numbers. For nonantioxidants, vitamin B12 use both before and during chemotherapy was significantly associated with poorer disease-free survival (adjHR, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.15 to 2.92; P < .01)... /3
