Words matter.
As a #DisabledNurse I often deal with #ableism in my professional life. Today I was attending a national meeting and want to share what happened. It is not my intent to embarrass or call anyone out. I want to share my perspective with hope it helps ppl.
When I know better I do better and I try to share my learnings. I was listening to an excellent webinar by a person who clearly had mastery of the topic today. During the presentation, that I paid to attend, they used the term “lame” several times to mean boring or not creative.
After several times saying it, I posted in the chat to please not use that word.

The speaker was talking and did not see the comment. Someone was reading questions and comments to them and skipped my comment while addressing all of the other comments. Image

🧵 My oncology colleagues know how often I say: #WordsMatter. So I’m thinking about words we use to talk about #RobbElementary & every other incident of #GunViolence in 🇺🇸. Part of why people can scroll past these things, why they may not even register as news to us... /1
Is that somewhere along the way, we had words like “school shooter” & “gunman” drilled into our consciousness as the usual terms. These things oddly sound more like jobs—‘school shooter’ sounds like school principal or school secretary & ‘gunman’ like fireman or repairman… /2
And hear me out on this because the same sentence lands very differently if you substitute, for example, mass murderer or elem school killer. Try it. Grab any article. Listen to any news story. Swap all the words. #Uvalde school shooting m becomes #RobbElemementaryMassacre. /3

Conflict in #Ukraine.🧵
Politicians and media around the world often refer to the war unleashed by Russia against Ukraine as a “conflict in Ukraine”. What does this "conflict" mean? Let's imagine how this word would sound in a different context, more familiar to many. 1/5
Ex#1. Conflict in Poland: The Nazis killed more than three million Jews in concentration camps. The leader of Germany says that these people were the first to unleash a confrontation with the Nazis. 2/5
Ex#2. There was a conflict between the Americans and members of the Bin Laden group in New York. As a result of this conflict, almost three thousand people died, more than 6300 were injured. 3/5

I spent many hours last week observing the practice of medicine while sitting at my mom’s hospital bedside and was reminded of some important communication pearls. Some musings…
🧵
1/n
1. Introduce yourself by full name, role and team and have ID badges visible. It can get very confusing for pts and family members with the number of people in and out of rooms.
e.g. "My name is Dr. X. I'm the intern on the primary internal medicine team.”

2/n
2. End your patient visit with a summary of the plan for the day.
3. Avoid medical jargon & speak slowly, clearly, and logically. Remember you are a teacher for your pts and their family.

How a Powerful Company Convinced Georgia to Let It Bury Toxic Waste in Groundwater

@propublica: Georgia Power & GOP leaders in GA have been working for years to bend the rules

is there no limit to their greed & reckless disregard for the environment?
propublica.org/article/how-a-…
"Georgia Power reps argued that state regulators could narrowly interpret the definition of a single word — “infiltration” — in the federal coal ash rule. The company believed this interpretation would allow millions of tons of waste to be left submerged in groundwater."
"Georgia Power hoped to store coal ash in a way that only prevented water — such as rain falling from the sky — from seeping through a cover over the dry ash. They hoped regulators would disregard the presence of any groundwater that would soak the dry ash..."

The @GOP and Roger Stone and Steve Bannon and Mike Flynn and even elected Republicans owe me the truth. Every day I took screenshots and everyday I worried more.
@January6thCmte you look at these...you see what I saw....a coordinated attack on our elections not by foreigners but Americans I'm angry.

I attended as an individual. I am not affiliated with any PAC or organization. I obviously do not speak for or represent the #Palestinian people. There’s like 7 million of us at least, and like 2 million of #Palestinians stuffed in #Gaza alone.
To the #Palestinian Americans who boycotted this meeting after the #Biden Administration handed Israel $735 million dollars in weaponry following the merciless attacks on Palestinians locked in Gaza.

@JeremyLoveday @deardubow Hi @JeremyLoveday Appreciate you clearing that up, and apologize 4 assuming that ur RT meant U ID as "woke". (@deardubow conflated progressive councillors = woke") It's a word I have trouble with (same as I do with 'left' vs 'right' in poli discourse. 1/
@JeremyLoveday @deardubow I also suggest to @CharlesBodi that #wordsmatter; and his initial poll inferring that 'woke' ppl are cockroaches was not at all helpful. The word does carry connotations that go beyond common usage (an undesirable pest) 2/
@JeremyLoveday @deardubow @CharlesBodi "on the African continent, it must be assumed that those who flippantly drop this term into political rhetoric are unaware of its historical applications" 3/

The House That Innocence Built - Part 2

In case you haven't, I do encourage you to read yesterday's thread. Today, we'll focus more deeply on the House itself, and the necessary function of Innocence in its creation.
2) To comprehend our mission, we need to embrace the command #WordsMatter. We also need to embrace the additional command #LogicMatters. Interestingly, when you look up the roots of the term logic, you logos, which has the meanings of both 'word' and 'reasoning.'
3) Allow an example. A dear friend of mine was discussing the laws and practice of face masks and said, "I guess it's just the perennial conflict between the rights of the individual and the greater good of the group." Oh, I was so tempted, but I resisted. I did not yield.

Multiple Choice quiz.

What were RBG’s alleged last words?

“My most fervent wish is to not be replaced until a new President is...”

A. Elected
B. Installed
C. Voted In
D. Chosen by Circuit Court Judges

If you chose correctly, ask yourself why she chose those words.
If you are still reading this, the correct answer is “B”.

Why would a President be “INSTALLED” and not elected?

Did she refuse to retire in order to help with the “INSTALLATION” of Joe Biden via a contested election to be ultimately decided by the Supreme Court?
FYI, in this country we do not “Install” our President.

We vote for our states electors who pledge to cast their votes for the winner of the states popular vote for President.

We elect our President Ruth.

We need to stop talking about how we maybe need to stop using it, or how we might use other names alongside it, and we need to just STOP USING IT.
Wondering why I’m tweeting such an atypically, a-professionally unneutral position on this? Then you’re perfectly primed for the next tweet. The unneutral medium really is the unneutral message.

Inclusive language plays a critical role in fostering an environment where everyone belongs. At Twitter, the language we have been using in our code does not reflect our values as a company or represent the people we serve. We want to change that. #WordsMatter
We’re starting with a set of words we want to move away from using in favor of more inclusive language, such as:
There is no switch we can flip to make these changes everywhere, at once. We will continue to iterate on this work and want to put in place processes and systems that will allow us to apply these changes at scale. We’re focusing on these areas 👇

While I'm enjoying the newfound interest in celebrating #JUNETEENTH2020, let's not forget exactly what we're celebrating.
Juneteenth isn't the day African Americans were freed from slavery.
It's the day when African Americans FOUND OUT they had been freed from slavery.
The Civil War was over, Lee had surrendered at Appomattox and the defeated Confederates retreated back home to their farms and their plantations, knowing that they had lost and that the reason for the war, African American slavery, had come to an end.
But once back home, knowing their world had changed, did the white slave masters release their black slaves and wish them good luck? Or even try to negotiate a paid position for the men and women who fed them, provided their living and took care of their children?

I’m going to correct some of the misinformation that’s out there by using the correct wording:

1) Lecce is INCREASING the class average in gr. 9-12 from 22 to 23, which will still mean classes of 35-40 in High School and more lost jobs.
2) Lecce is allowing parents to go through a tedious process to opt their children out of the 2 MANDATORY E-Learning courses.
3) Lecce is REDUCING the funding for Special Education to allow funds for STEM & Mental Health. (All valid expenditures but each should have their own $)
4) Lecce is REDUCING the budget for education and ADDING the Child Tax Credit to the numbers to make it LOOK like it’s increased.
5) Lecce is REDUCING the ‘per student’ funding by $54.

Starting a thread to unpack this @courierjournal article, possibly the deepest dive profile to date on our organization’s work to change the narrative & impact culture by using the power of story to transcend politics & shift the conversation... courier-journal.com/story/life/201…

@courierjournal It’s no accident that the conversation about how we @defineamerican is based in #Kentucky, the birthplace of iconic cultural figures such as Lincoln & Ali — & the former Confederate States President Jefferson Davis … It’s my home as well.

Are you out of your mind?
Mark, you wrote a Vendors dream story.

Would you include his age of 86, if he was 46?
1/
@kindlee55 @markniesse @PaperBallotsGA ...It’s going to be a slow thing,” McClung said. “You have to take the paper out, look at it, walk it across the room and put it in. There’s a lot of wasted paper."'
How you sung the company's (Dominion's) song:
"Georgia is replacing its 17-year-old digital voting system

@kindlee55 @markniesse @PaperBallotsGA , which didn’t have a ^paper ballot.
voters make their choices on touchscreens. But with the new system, ea touchscreen is attached to a printer that produces a ^paper ballot. Voters can then review their selections before inserting their •ballots into a scanning machines.

Reflecting...

On rounds, subtle differences in wording can create very different meaning and send very different messages. Attending's #WordsMatter
