Super Bowl LVII was historic. It was the first time two African American quarterbacks started in the Super Bowl. That's a big deal. The American Professional Football Association began in 1920 and immediate integrated with 4 Black players. Fritz Pollard was one of the 4 players.
However, in 1933, he and 8 others were quietly removed from the teams, never to return. The now-NFL remained segregated until 1946. It would be another 12 years before the league would allow a Black man into the coveted, 'thinking' position nflpa.com/posts/meet-the….

August home builder sentiment and sales/prices/starts survey results are in. Top themes: 1) Home price cuts along with other incentives are helping sales (for now). 2) Supply chain is healing as demand drops and builders quickly slow housing starts. Market commentary to follow…
#Austin builder: “A lot of spec inventory to work through. August was a very poor month for sales across the board. Cancellations spiked from July and buyers showed no sense of urgency.”
#Baltimore builder: “Jumbo loan rates below 5% are helping buyers move forward in that segment.”

Why are there so many #WWI memorials in #KansasCity ? Outside of our own @TheWWImuseum, there are dozens, small and large covering KS and MO. A lot of it has to do with the 5-day experience of the 35th Division in Sept 1918. Let's look at it through KC newspapers of the time. 🧵
Over the course of that time, the 35th would suffer more casualties than all units on Omaha Beach on #Dday combined. As a National Guard formation, it came under criticism for its performance from regular officers. Politicians in MO and KS eventually became involved.
On both sides of the state line, questions arose. Particularly from Kansas governor Henry Justin Allen, who pressured the War Department for answers.

#Dallas builder: “Interest lists are shrinking or buyers are truly pausing.”
#Houston builder: “Many first-time buyers simply no longer qualify with the increase in interest rates, as their debt-to-income ratio gets out of whack.”

We @JBREC just surveyed 400+ flippers about #fixandflip conditions in partnership with Flatiron Realty Capital and @SundaeHQ.
Key takeaway: There is a TON of competition for deals right now.
MARKET COMMENTARY THREAD 🧵 ->
#LasVegas flipper: “Market is oversaturated with inexperienced investors due to an increase of “gurus.” Supply is low, demand is high, and prices are inflated 20%+ over ARV. Not sustainable.”
#Phoenix flipper: “Phoenix is a very active market with home prices on the rise. The competition is aggressive.”

@Eric_Schmitt Eric’s campaign was long overdue to release a playlist; 22 #GreatestHits now await so that Schmitt’s #ShowMeState its AG’s dismal record can view, for this 🚑 chaser’s unfit. Each song here I dedicate to Schmitt. @MoGov #SchmittList

@Eric_Schmitt @MoGov 1/ AG Schmitt’s favorite ploy was named “sue.” While campaigning, it’s all he could do large donations (in cash) with false hope soon to stash for his failing run in ’22: the main ingredient Schmitt would need @RoyBlunt in the Senate to succeed.

@tishaura
@Eric_Schmitt @MoGov @RoyBlunt @tishaura 2/ Like Schmitt’s polling, #AutumnLeaves will fall. Medicine? He knows nothing at all. He wants people to chafe: keep #Missouri unsafe. Any recovery he’d forestall w/ more tirades against using masks. In publicity this AG basks.

10 days have passed since the reparations coalition panel w/o another peep from them or any local media coverage of the event. Why is that? #kansascity
Black Americans in Kansas City AND across the nation are having increasingly specific discussions about what reparations should be yet those discussions are rarely reflected in media. Next to never in Kansas City's local news coverage. Again, why is that? #reparations #ADOS
Asking rhetorically, of course. I KNOW why. Although I thought were supposed to expect more from the likes of @cvoiceks @kcur @kcbeacon #thecall @KCDefender @TheFastPitch
Our city government is no better. They have yet to publicly advocate for targeted redress to Black Americans.

Companies tied to housing revising guidance due to supply chain. Commentary from our builder survey this month indicates things getting worse before they get better. Homes sitting, waiting for materials (dead days). Big delays in windows. Delta outbreaks. In sum, a crapshoot. 🧵
#Nashville builder: “It's a crap shoot. Some municipalities will issue permits in 1 week, & others are 6-9 months behind. Supply chain is a mess. Windows are now 7 months out, cabinets are 6 months out, etc.”
#Chicago builder: “Build cycle increased due to backordered materials including bathtubs, appliances, & ceramic tile. Trades are much more limited in availability & now have some ‘dead days’ with no activity.”

According to reports, a handful of Republican staffers & legislatures @MoGov statehouse pressured the @mohistorymuseum to remove an exhibit on #KansasCity’s #LGBTQ History. I helped curate the exhibit. Here’s what you need to know. /1

washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/09…
@MoGov @mohistorymuseum The exhibit is called “Making History: Kansas City & the Rise of Gay Rights.” It documents how in 1966 early gay rights activists met in KC in what became the first national LGBTQ meeting. You can read the exhibit here. /2

info.umkc.edu/makinghistory/
@MoGov @mohistorymuseum The exhibit is a work of scholarship. It was curated by students in my @UMKC “Public History” class in 2016 & was intended to raise awareness about a new marker installed in downtown KC commemroating the 1966 meeting. /3

I’ve updated my #Missouri #COVID19 website for Tuesday, 3/23 - slu-opengis.github.io/covid_daily_vi…. A few highlights, and *new* hospitalization plots, are below 👇.

We saw continued declines in #KCMO and “outstate” but did see a slight bump in new cases in the #StLouis metro area. 1/15 ImageImageImageImage
We’re now two weeks out from the addition of antigen cases and have seen no real overall change in our current 7-day averages ☝️. This is great news from a tracking perspective, and means our sense of the virus over the past few weeks was not distorted. 2/15
I mentioned a small number of counties that I was concerned about last week. Montgomery County, in Mid MO, has seen its rate of new cases decline just as precipitously as it climbed last week. 3/15 ImageImage

This is my #Missouri #COVID19 evening update 🧵 for Thursday, 11/12. My website has been fully updated - slu-opengis.github.io/covid_daily_vi….

Our 7-day averages continue to climb - now 4059 new cases per day on average statewide, with all-time highs again in #KansasCity and “outstate.” 1/18
The #StLouis Metro (including IL counties) added ~1969 cases per day on average over the past week - far and away the highest volume of cases we’ve seen here. #KansasCity is also adding more than 1000 cases per day on average. 2/18
Remember, though, that these numbers don’t directly compare to the time series in March/April/May because of poor testing access. They are far more comparable to August/September, when cases were far fewer in number. 3/18

This is my #Missouri #COVID19 evening update 🧵 for Tuesday, 11/10. My website has been fully updated - slu-opengis.github.io/covid_daily_vi….

Last Thursday, I asked rhetorically how high our 7-day averages could go. The answer, so far, is we have not found a ceiling yet. 1/20 ImageImageImageImage
We’re adding just shy of 3700 new cases per day on average ☝️, with the highest per capita rates in the “outstate” region. Just a month ago we had never had the 7-day average pass 1700. Now we’re setting all-time highs daily statewide as well as in the “meso” regions. 2/20
At the metro level, #StLouis has surpassed 100,000 cases cumulatively. Our 7-day average was stable at 20 new cases per 100,000 per day on average for much of the fall, and now has tripled to 60 in a relatively short timeframe. Jefferson City’s is nearing 140. 3/20 ImageImageImageImage

My #Missouri #COVID19 tracking site has been fully updated for Sunday, 9/6 - slu-opengis.github.io/covid_daily_vi….

The statewide 7-day average continued upward, sitting about ~20 cases per day on average below our peak value in July. This increase came entirely from the “outstate” trend. 1/5
In contrast to “outstate,” which continues to climb, the trends for #StLouis are falling and they are steady in the #KansasCity meso region ☝️. This is great news for those areas considering the large # of new cases yesterday, but deeply concerning for “outstate” hotspots. 2/5
Those hotspots are primarily centered on the Columbia, Springfield, and Joplin metro areas as well as a smattering of counties in northern (esp. Marion and Nodaway) and southeastern MO (esp. St. Francois, not shown). 3/5

This is my #Missouri #COVID19 evening update 🧵 for Thursday, 8/27. My website has been fully updated - slu-opengis.github.io/covid_daily_vi….

The 7-day average of new cases statewide ticked back up yesterday, with corresponding increases in #KansasCity and in the "outstate" region. 1/16
Outstate is back to posting highs relative to past report days ☝️, which now makes up 48.4% of our statewide 7-day average. Only #StLouis continues to show steady improvements. 2/16
The area around Springfield is a big part of the outstate trend. Greene County is averaging 80 new cases per day on average right now, and the Springfield metro is averaging around 100, though 7-day averages have dropped in surrounding counties. 3/16

YES-MAN MCCAUL, BACK AT IT AGAIN #TX10

Trump’s favorite coward @repmccaul is once again running interference for Trump’s blatant moves toward outright fascism. A THREAD:
In an interview last night, @repmccaul attacked the White House Press Corps, advancing Trump’s ‘fake news’ narrative because reporters had the AUDACITY to question the violent crackdown on Portland by federal agents & Trump’s plans to expand this horror nationwide. #TX10
As Chairman of House Homeland Security Committee, 2013-19, @repmccaul consistently advocated more aggressive DHS activities, including abridgments of civil liberties as he pushed for bloated growth & mission creep. McCaul remains unwavering in this project today.

The 7-day averages of new cases reached new highs again yesterday in each of the three meta “regions” of Missouri I plot 👇. 1/5
However, when you interpret these trends, please be cognizant of the caveats I posted yesterday in the third tweet of my non-thread thread. 2/5
Also of note - the 7-day averages of new cases that I pointed out yesterday in #StLouis and #KansasCity continued to climb in the latest data update. 3/5

Long #Missouri #COVID19 evening update 🧵 for Thursday, 7/7. I’ve pushed updates to all metrics to the website - slu-opengis.github.io/covid_daily_vi….

The statewide 7-day average is basically unchanged, though the #KansasCity average hit another new peak value yesterday. 1/19
Expect this status quo to change tomorrow, as we absorb the 773 new cases in today’s DHSS release (which aren’t in my data tonight). @erinheff's reporting for @stltoday indicates that the state believes that this a backlog due to the holiday weekend. 2/19 stltoday.com/lifestyles/hea…
What matters more than our single day values is the trend - this may indeed be an outlier day in terms of raw numbers, but we’ll have to see what the next week brings in terms of new cases. 3/19

Short #Missouri #COVID19 evening update 🧵 for Tuesday, 6/30. I’ve pushed updates to all metrics to the website - slu-opengis.github.io/covid_daily_vi….

The statewide 7-day average jumped significantly to a new peak, with #KansasCity hitting a new peak, #StLouis at its highest point… 1/15
… since early May, and the outstate trend up as well, though it a bit short of its peak three days ago.

Every county in SW MO that I have been focusing on added cases yesterday. 2/15
In SE MO, Butler County added 24 new cases yesterday - easily the largest single day bump there - and is averaging over 5 new cases per day right now. Perry and Cape Girardeau have both continued to add new cases, too. 3/15

Short #Missouri #COVID19 evening update 🧵 for Tuesday, 6/16. I’ve pushed updates to all metrics to the website - slu-opengis.github.io/covid_daily_vi….

The headline - outstate cases hit another new peak today - we’re averaging ~84 new cases per day outside of #StLouis and #KansasCity. 1/
The statewide 7-day average plots have a noticeable anomaly on the green trend line - a drop then spike back up ☝️ that is artifact from the largely missed day of reporting Sunday that I mentioned in my 🧵 yesterday. I don’t think yesterday’s data release overcompensates... 2/17
...by dumping more new cases than we would expect. Instead, this is reversion of the mean - i.e. our 7-day averages right now are probably a bit lower than they would have been had the state provided the regular update to their dashboard on Sunday, but not by all that much. 3/17

Here is my #Missouri #COVID 🧵 for Monday, 5/4. To see the interactive maps, head over to the MO tracking site - slu-opengis.github.io/covid_daily_vi….

Since Missouri “reopens” today, with the statewide #StayAtHome order lifted, I want to take stock of our data.

1/22
I don’t want to bury the lede, though - as of “reopening” day, we:

❌ do not have reliable, public hospitalization or symptom data,
❌ have not increased testing volume in weeks, and
❌ have significant increases in cases in multiple regions around the state.

2/22
The state’s highest rates are in Saline County ☝️☝️, where an outbreak several meatpacking plants has led to nearly 200 cases. An earlier meatpacking outbreak in Moniteau County seems to have subsided based on the data we have at hand. 3/22
