First up in the panel is a keynote address from @EU_Commission Vice-Presidency @dubravkasuica, who talks about her brief in the Commission: democracy and demography
/2
The #CoFoE is a key theme of the speech: citizens' role in shaping the #FutureofEurope is a priority of the conference, and citizens from across Europe can deliberate with each other
/3
"The EU gives significant support to the #WesternBalkans, including EUR 30bn of investment to create sustainable growth in the region"
- @dubravkasuica describes EU external action in the Western Balkans
/4
"This requires different solutions tailored for each regions specific needs"
After the intervention of @EU_Commission Vice-President @dubravkasuica, we turn to moderator @MichaelKaeding to introduce our panel composed of representative from the DiCE network
/6
Sandra Kröger from the #InDivEU project is beginning her presentation by recapping her recent conclusions on the risks and rewards of DI -> something she elaborated on in her recent #DiCEWebinar!
"There is a difference in support levels between the political right (pro-DI) and left (anti-DI), between north (pro-DI) and south (anti-DI), but among party actors, the split is more even"
Sandra Kröger from #InDivEU concludes by calling for Europe to take diverging perceptions of DI into account, by paying attention to how it is used. Democratic legitimacy and transparency are key
/11
"#Brexit told us: the way the people are asked a question can affect the way they consider their answer: we should pay attention not only to how citizens respond to our questions, but also to what our questions consist of"
" If the @EUCouncil is too internally divided on how to implement the will of European citizens via the #CoFoE, it is on the Member States to ensure effectiveness and accountability"
We now turn to Magdalena Góra from @EU3Dh2020 and @JagiellonskiUni to give her take on "EU: Differentiation, Dominance, and Democracy"
/15
"Our analysis demonstrates that most people debate similar issues on the #FutureofEurope, BUT the discussion on the solutions to these issues vary significantly"
"Who speaks about the #FutureofEurope? The political denomination of actors is important for this debate: eurosceptic actors and strong proponents of the EU are more active than the centre"
Magdalena Góra from @EU3Dh2020 & @JagiellonskiUni also took the time to highlight the risk of not delivering on the results of the #CoFoE: citizens' voices must be heard
/18
On that note, we turn to a Q&A session with our participants - now is the time to get your questions in to our representatives of the DiCE constituent projects: #InDivEU, @IdeaEu, and @EU3Dh2020
/19
We're enjoying a particularly vibrant discussion during our Q&A: questions raised include how to make #CoFoE a truly transformative tool, what representative democracy requires in a Union of 27, and much more!
/20
