1/🧵Politics is all about controlling the narrative.
Machiavelli said democracies are the most stable government because you can trust a well informed populous to make the right decision.
Flip side of a democracy is anarchy, usually result of corruption and misinformed public...
2/Its why we currently face an onslaught of disinformation from foreign governments and the far right, creating confusion, undermining trust in institutions furthers their agendas.
The media should be vital for keeping the public informed.
3/Politicians have always deceived and mislead to one extent or another, however the hubris with which out current cabinet engages in outright dishonesty is astounding for its brazenness.
Johnsons speech to G7, you could hear the smirch in his voice, its a game to them
4/ Covid has shown just how broken most our media is, stenographers, sycophants or too cowered (like the BBC) to challenge the government narrative.
Several posts I've seen today have shared my own sense of frustration at fighting to get a message through the narrative thats
5/ been forced onto us, the disinformation of establishment politics, media barons and corporate lobbyists.
They've worked so hard to smother opposing voices, but what's most frustrating is that we've had to work much harder to get a fraction of cut through
6/This thread charts how warnings were raised about Delta when we could still have stamped it out, but instead those calling for caution were ridiculed and smeared for calling for simple effective measures.
8/ Grassroots organisations with thousands of members struggle to be heard, meanwhile small well-connected groups with deep pockets like UsForThem get disproportionately platformed to peddle disinformation.
9/ As someone who has campaigned for years on SEND, mental health and access to education for those disproportionately offrolled I'm disgusted by the weaponisation of children's mental health by skeptics and HI by infection advocates.
10/ Few years ago we had 80k campaigners against SEND cuts depriving children of fair access to education.
Where were the pundits and papers then?
Didn't even get a mention on BBC but they covered Farage traping through the mud with a few dozen at a similar time
11/ Where are they now schools are again facing increasing disruption?
Where are the concerns for all this lost learning?
Even though Labour are banging on about recovery funding, they're ignoring the fact lots of children are getting sent out of school due to lack of measures
12/ CAHMS has been collapsing for years, children in desperate need of support can wait years for help.
They didn't care about this when it wasn't effecting their lives, when it didn't fit with the desired narrative
16/The government is allowing Delta to circulate in schools whilst preventing measures to reduce transmission
Gov advisors are talking about natural immunity in children while a coordinated PR campaign is run against vaccinating children and ministers just aren't being challenged
17/ March 2020 the gov tried to sell us herd immunity by infection and most the media complied with this until it was too late
The under 40s are being abandoned to infection so media comply again, minimalising long covid.
2016 Tories set up OBON campaign registered to a pizzeria alongside 50k other companies
Receive media praise from Tory MP in a visit to a school run by a campaign founder
Get endorsed by DfE
OBON block educators who questions this
SAGE modelling released after the briefing shows gov have factored in large scale infection of the under 40s and lots of school disruption, so all that concern about loss of learning?
Where has that gone now thousands of students are being isolated?
I assume that's when the over 50s have been double dosed.
It also means schools will be about to break up, and although the gov pretends otherwise they know schools are acting as Delta hubs.
3/ Been saying for a while I think the government believes the quickest route to herd immunity with what they consider an acceptable death and health toll is
2 jab over 50s
1 jab 18-50s
Natural infection for under 18s
Its a gamble based on impatience and pandering to lobbyists
If we had an adequate media then everytime a minister was interviewed they'd be asked about when the government will finally invest in ventilation.
All the evidence says this is one of the most important measures.
2.Even skeptics are going to struggle to portray clean air as an attack on our freedoms, if anything we have a right to clean air.The impact of pollution on health and in particular on children is clear
Can anyone remember the last time a minister was asked about ventilation?
3. Can anyone ever remember a minister being asked about investing ventilation in the whole pandemic?
UK government's total failure to address this is stark
So is the failure of the media to hold the gov to account for this glaring hole in their Covid strategy.
