But this thread is less about varenicline specifically and more about product recalls, quality control & #nicotine containing products such as #snus, #HTP / #HnB & (most) #eCigarettes. Product recalls are not possible in an illicit mkt or practical in a poorly regulated mkt.
3/
#Snus is illegal for retail sale. Consumers can import it, but will face either stiff #TobaccoTax being added by customs, or confiscation of the product (it's really a crapshoot). No oversight or product quality assurance checking happens in either case.
5/
Facing either of those possibilities, some consumers make their own #snus. Often it is made from #ChopChop#tobacco grown locally - to avoid paying the high #TobaccoTax charged on all forms of legal tobacco (including pouch tobacco).
6/
Here is some #snus I got from a friend a week or so ago. Notice that one of the sachets is improperly sealed. I only just now noticed that, and discarded it.
That poorly-sealed pouch is not a great problem since it is easily recognised & dealt with. 7/
But it speaks to the bigger problem of #QualityControl. How can I know the #tobacco in these #snus pouches does not contain /high/ levels of #nitrosamines, or other #HPHCs? What would I even look for? I honestly have no idea.
8/
In a submission to the inquiry in #Australia, I pointed out that it was already /possible/ for Australians to use #HTP / #HnB products by putting loose #tobacco in Dry Herb Vaporizers (more often used for .. other plant material). You can see two types marked 5 & 6 below. 10/
While those devices are fortunately subject to a level of quality control according to standards for electronic products in #Australia, the problem (as might more often happen) comes from the #tobacco that is put into them. That tobacco can be seen in the packs marked 7 & 8.
11/
The pouch #tobacco marked as 7 is legally bought from a tobacconist. High tax, but at least if it's moldy, the product can be recalled. I've /seen/ a product recall notice in a tobacco shop to that exact effect. [Possibly not the brand seen there, but the point stands.]
12/
The black plastic bag OTOH (marked 8), contains #ChopChop#tobacco. Locally grown (probably), no #TobaccoTax, no oversight & insufficient quality control. I have bought this type of tobacco and at least one batch /reeked/ of mold.
PMI's application was rejected out of hand.
13/
Both #snus & #HTP / #HnB will /theoretically/ become legal in #Australia due to the confusing & unworkable #nicotine regulations being championed by our health minister Greg Hunt. As will Paan, Gutka, Naswar & any other of the more toxic forms of #smokeless#tobacco.
14/
I say theoretically, because the implementation of the laws beyond 'must be prescribed by an Australian GP' is entirely unclear at this stage.
15/
But there is a common factor to all but the #HTP / #HnB products using legal, expensive pouch #tobacco. And this includes the #nicotine for #vaping that the regs were originally /intended/ to apply to:
There. Is. No. Oversight. There is no option to enforce a product recall.
16/
The regs as proposed will not only make it difficult for #nicotine consumers to buy alternate products to #cigarettes & #tobacco 'prepared & packed for #smoking', but they will also offer no protections on the products for which we /do/ manage to get a prescription!
17/
If the government of #Australia is to have any chance of ensuring these products are appropriate for the protection of the #PublicHealth of the consumers of such products, they need to be appropriately regulated as consumer products!
@LeemingLachie / @AngiraB_ / @dailytelegraph! In UR June 11th article 'Vape Craze, A Real Drag', @MauriceGSwanson is quoted as saying: "If you buy vaping pods, they say they don't contain nicotine but they do. I can bet you next week's salary that they have nicotine in them." 1/4
Well if by 'vaping pods' he means the sealed disposable vapes, I'll take him up on that bet.
One week of my income against one week of his salary. I could use the money! 2/4
He can nominate an accredited Australian based testing lab and pay for the analysis (or you can, I'm not fussed either way).
I'll supply four different types of sealed disposable vapes (or you can buy them - DM me 4 deets). If any of the four contains nicotine - I lose. 3/4
Of course, children should be considered, & protected, but why not focus on the harm facing adult smokers? If they can #QuitSmoking by 40 years old (some say 35), they can avoid any serious health implications.
Well, I've thought (probably too) much on this, and suspect these folks all hold the same beliefs:
Senescent, sour, Sydney moonhowler @SimonChapman6 has been 'shaking his cane' at #tobacco shops for selling #vapes. Thing is, they are a 'highly addictive' **0%** #nicotine strength.
Hey .. one is even sour, so may be right up his alley.
How ya' like /them/ apples, Simon? 😏
As such.. it is not 'highly addictive', 'highly habituating', or even 'mildly habituating'.
I picked those two up in Sydney the other day at a tobacconist - who was proud to tell me they had no nicotine at all.
Reassuringly, one of those is actually /made in #Australia/. So applying sensible consumer regs(1) for Quality Control should be easy, and save us (consumers) from having to get them from countries that do not demand high standards in construction or ingredients.
For the latter two, here is a project I'm working on at the moment. It is a 3D printed box for electronics.
The thing is, I /could/ use a Jiffy Box (below), as U might buy from @JaycarAU.
But the problem is, they are a 'one size (OK 3) fits all' approach. jaycar.com.au/search?text=ji…
..and the thing is, they are usually the /wrong/ size.
One variant might have enough length & width, but not enough depth.
Another might have enough width and depth, but not be long enough!
@SimonChapman6criticizes #vape advocate for mentioning success, not failure. What's the failure rate of #ColdTurkey, Simon? Not heard you mention that.. #AusTHRInquiry2020#PH2
A number of people submitting to the #AusTHRInquiy2020 have expressed concern that their submissions have not yet appeared. This tweet thread is an analysis of the order and logic with which the submissions are appearing. My best advice is:
Don't Worry. Yours will appear soon. 1/
The image in the first tweet shows the list of submissions so far, which provide a date on the document. I am assuming the date on the document is on or close to, the date lodged. It is sorted by date, and the first column (#) shows that they do not appear in order. 2/
But why would they appear out of order?
For a number of reasons. I put on my 'administrators hat' and try to imagine how I, managing a team of administrative underlings, while catering to the wishes and demands of the politicians sitting on the inquiry, might approach it. 3/
