1/ Governments are largely not making #ClimateChange action central to their COVID-19 recovery packages, despite some signs of good intentions - our new briefing for #CWNY, released today bit.ly/CAT_CWNY_2020
2/ We've analysed the post-#COVID_19 #recovery packages of 5 countries: #China, #EU27, #India, #SouthKorea and the #USA. Only two lean towards using the pandemic recovery to address the global #climate crisis: the EU27, and South Korea. First, we looked at overarching packages.
3/ We assessed 106 domestic measures across the 5 countries, differentiating between overarching packages & individual interventions, and rated them. The picture is not the most encouraging.

@IHME_UW (Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation) and @UWMedicine (University of Washington’s School of Medicine), no lightweights, have come out with
global projections of #COVID19 by nation.
Short summary 👇

healthdata.org/news-release/f…
They modelled 3 scenarios:
1. Worse case:
- mask usage stays at current rates, and,
- governments continue relaxing social distancing requirements.
This leads to 4.0 million total deaths by the end of the year.
Best case:
- mask usage is near-universal, and,
- governments impose social distancing requirements when their daily death rate exceeds 8 per million.
This leads to 2.0 million total deaths if by the end of the year.

#Southkorea #Seoul #Coronavirus

South Korea is pausing the strict corona requirements for the greater Seoul area. The authorities said that restaurants in the capital may also serve food after 9 p.m. In addition, leisure facilities such as fitness studios and
internet cafes are likely to reopen. The easing should help strengthen the economy. With the start of the holidays on September 28th, stricter measures would take effect again. The Center for Disease Control reported 121 new cases for all of South Korea on Saturday,
bringing the total number of infections to 22,176. So far, 358 people have died in connection with Covid 19 disease.

🚨BREAKING: @realDonaldTrump admitted he *knew in FEBRUARY* that the #coronavirus was dangerous, airborne, highly contagious and "more deadly than even your strenuous flus,” adding that it was ~5 times "more deadly" than the flu.

Yet Trump DID NOTHING.🤬

‼️"I wanted to always play it down," Trump told Bob Woodward on March 19.

As a consequence, over 6,000,000 Americans have been infected with #coronavirus and nearly 200,000 are DEAD.🤬

#TrumpVirus #COVID19
I began warning about this #coronavirus in JANUARY. If, instead of LYING about the threat, Trump had acted decisively in early February with a #lockdown and a consistent message to #WearAMask, social distance and wash hands, MANY THOUSANDS of American lives could have been saved.

No to offend anyone or to defend anyone re. #cancelkorea but have you asked these questions first, a thread:
1. Has anyone of you done thorough research re. the social media user/s who made those distasteful comments against us? Are you sure that they aren't trolls/bots? 1/3
2. Have you also examined the possibility that it is a way to create unnecessary division/confusion pitting us against one another using our personal biases #KPopFans #KDramas #KoreanFood towards #SouthKorea as a whole? 2/3
3. If the alleged people involved refuse to apologize, will/can you permanently #cancelkorea? Do you prefer a prominent #Kpop artist/star to do it instead to make amends? By the way, are you also equally offended by #China's aggression? #WPSIsOurs 3/3

(1/4) words are going around about real estate prices in #Seoul, so I made a #cartogram using "Go Cart Generator" to illustrate the population density problem in #SouthKorea.
(2/4) 2019 was the first year when the population in the "Seoul Capital Area," which includes #Seoul, #Incheon, #Gyeonggi Province, exceeded the population living in the rest of the country. That's over 50% living in just 11.8% of the nation's territory.
(3/4) Real estate is just one facet of the problem. Medical care, education, culture, politics, industry - people say #Seoul is a "black hole" that absorbs them all, leaving the rest of the country in a shortage of key resources.

Been meaning to write a thread about this pre-print (literature review, opinion piece) on #COVID19, children and #schools. (Very likely I am replicating somebody's efforts already). A lot of it in there made sense to a lay-person like me so here it is:
mja.com.au/journal/2020/c…
Are children less susceptible to infection? Research is ongoing and no definitive evidence either way yet.
From 61K people in #Spain, 3.4% of children and teenagers had antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 (point-of-care test) vs 4.4-6.0% of adults.
In the same study, in a subset of 52K people with immunoassay testing, the children-adult "gap" narrowed to 3.8% vs 4.5-5.0%. T
Are children less susceptible to infection than adults, or does it reflect shielding? Schools closed in March and haven't opened as of early August.

Some quick analysis on KJU & his latest politburo meeting on #COVID19 yesterday because this is not just about #NorthKorea reporting a potential outbreak for the first time, as significant & newsworthy as that is. Image
Background: Despite sharing a long border with China, #NorthKorea claims it does not have a single confirmed case of #COVID19, which is hard to believe. But without access, we have no way right now of knowing the truth, and I think we need to be skeptical of all info from #DPRK.
What I do see: KJU has been using fear of the #COVID19 pandemic as a way to rally his people against this outside threat. It’s part of a domestic political campaign to win the people’s loyalty after the disappointments of 2019. I wrote about this in Feb: wilsoncenter.org/blog-post/coro…

#SouthKorea has done a fantastic job with #ContactTracing This article analyzed reports for 59,073 contacts of 5,706 #COVID19 index patients. I believe it has important info for decision making related to #SchoolReopening

wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26…
- Of 10,592 household contacts, 11.8% had #COVID19
- Of 48, 481 nonhousehold contact, 1.9% had #COVID19
- All contacts were monitored for an avg 9.9 days after #SARSCoV2 was detected
- In houses with index 10-19 y.o, 18.6% of contacts had #COVID19
Conclusion
- Rates were higher for contacts of children than adults
- Reports from other countries estimate secondary attack rate for close contact ~ 35%
-High infection rate within family, so use personal protective measures should be used at home to reduce risk of transmission

#SouthKorea’s Eximbank Plans to Finance #Pakistan’s Large-Scale IT Project: Report

Update on #ContactTracing for #COVID19 - a thread. Early signs of success from SF Bay Area. Many local counties are approaching goal of contacting 90% of the region’s positive cases, even as coronavirus cases spike across the state. @mikereidmd @SF_DPH sfchronicle.com/health/article…
2. San Francisco @SF_DPH data:
• % of Cases Reached for #ContactTracing over Prior Two Weeks – currently 82%, target 90+%
• % of Named Contacts Reached for Contact Tracing over the Prior Two Weeks – currently 85%, target 90+%

3. OTOH, lack of transparency makes #ContactTracing success hard to measure. Impossible to know whether Bay Area’s two largest counties have been successful because their health officials refuse to reveal how many people they do reach, and how quickly. mercurynews.com/2020/06/29/is-…

"Country X has been lucky." "Nation Y has low population density." "Climate in tropical state Z has an impact."

Probably true, but then still:
#leadership
#strategy
#trust
#communications

massively influence a country's dealing with a #pandemic or a #crisis.

1/
Would countries have done better or worse with different #leadership and #strategy? I have NO DOUBT.

Key drivers like #leadership and #trust often seem underestimated or hard to grasp.

This is probably due to #complexity of the matter and that drivers are hard to measure.

2/
The drivers are all related:

#leadership ➡️ trust ➡️ successful execution of #strategy ➡️ empowered leadership ➡️ #trust

#Communications is the glue.

Thread: Wearing masks is our best defense against the #coronavirus.

@WhiteHouse press secretary said today that masks are no longer required in West Wing. Many tweets also advise against masks.

Result: Colossal failure of the US #COVID response.

An example of anti-mask rhetoric can be seen in the video below by a Mr. Huff. I will explain why everything that he says here is scientifically incorrect and a danger to public health. (I do not know Mr. Huff or his motivations.)

THREAD: For @politico I mapped out which countries are doing best when both their health and economic #coronavirus outcomes are considered - see here, with @beatricezjin.

#Vietnam is the clear best performer; the US ranks just 24th of 30. politico.com/interactives/2… #COVID
#1 Vietnam: The easy ranking leader as the biggest country with no COVID-19 deaths (95m), barely 300 cases, and economy still set to grow 2.7% in 2020.
#2 is #Taiwan: They avoided the need for a full lockdown by taking early action in January, proving that containment was possible despite proximity and other links with China. Still, with 70 percent of GDP linked to exports, Taiwan's economy is on track to shrink 4 percent.

KIM reportedly received 600,000 Yen (roughly USD 6000 USD) & Ms. Kim 200,000 Yen. In July 1994, a Superior Court sentenced KIM to 4 years imprisonment. Ms Kim got 3 year suspended sentence (2 year probation with no jail term). Both defendants appealed to the Supreme Court. 3/

A top US Senator Thom Tillis has unveiled an 18-point plan to hold China accountable.

Of these, a suggestion with the most ramification is perhaps moving manufacturing back to the US and gradually eliminating supply chain dependency on China.

Wow...we just watched a major #covid19 outbreak unfold in #SouthKorea from bars/clubs.

Wisconsin’s response?

“Hold my beer”
I’ll be honest- as much as this is so ludicrous that it’s humorous...it’s also infuriating. It’s really just selfish- & guess who will be responsible for trying to save some of these lives in 2 weeks?

Frontline workers have died of #covid19. They have infected their families.
We are one of the only places in the world that, despite being largely unprepared, w/o the systems in place to perform the level of testing/surveillance, or tracing/isolating that we need, we are letting people swarm into bars- right after a big bar outbreak in Korea!
