#SouthKorea update. As they approach 10K in total cases (a number that would seem large 6 weeks ago & now seems like wishful thinking for small states in USA), cCFR is now 1.7%, 42 of the 101 new cases are imported. 11K tests done. 1/3
Korean CDC did surveyed 100 people across country.

96% said they refrained from going outside.

70% ... are meeting people socially 50% less than before.

93% ...did not attend "gatherings" (religious or social).

95% ...did not use public venues (cafes, libraries). 2/3
10% have noone to turn to for help.

KCDC "reminded people that reaching out to friends & neighbors to show encouragement & support can go a long way toward helping people overcome a crisis & minimizing the psychological trauma of our society."

Good advice for everyone. 3/3

⚠️On 1/20, the 1st #COVID19 case was confirmed in the US and #SouthKorea.

2 days later, Trump bragged: “We have it totally under control. It’s 1 person coming from #China. It’s going to be just fine.”

Korea launched a #coronavirus test within 1 week.💥
theguardian.com/us-news/2020/m…
Trump's TOTAL failure to quickly deploy #COVID19 testing allowed the #coronavirus to spread UNDETECTED thru our communities.

Now, the US has the *most* confirmed cases in the world, whereas #SouthKorea has mostly contained the deadly virus.

The deadly #coronavirus is not the fault of any federal official. But the Trump Administration's LACK of response, including a failure to quickly ramp up #COVID19 testing, produce much-needed ventilators and #PPEs, and prepare hospitals, will COST LIVES.🤬

The discussion about China's official #Covid_19 statistics is important, for political and epidemiological reasons. What can be said about it? @dhnexon @namalhotra @OttoKolbl @DrEricDing @yindavid @chenchenzh @XihongLin @cjw_phd @yangxifan @Dali_Yang Please add/correct/refine
It is crucial to combine all available information and data points on this issue, as claims about responsibility for spreading #Covid19 are moving into a higher gear every day: UK businessinsider.com/coronavirus-bo… France: europe1.fr/international/…
Beyond the international "blame game" heating up, epidemiologists, virologists and health studies researchers need proper data and/or plausible estimates on many aspects of the pandemic. Since China is weeks ahead of the curve, its data are critical to understand #Covid_19 better

1. I feel the duty to help you to understand the debate on extremely intrusive #digitalSurveillance to fight #COVID. I don't feel comfortable to exclude such tracking in these days when thousands die, at the same time I have very serious concerns
2. we are now going through a situation we experienced after the 9/11 when politicians felt immense pressure. Interests to establish an #OrwellianSurveillance were also huge.Politicians opted for it (most shielded by secrecy) and that #OrwellianSurveillance is still here
3. It's very likely we will follow the same path:if we establish a new layer of extremely pervasive surveillance by putting together #HealthData,#localisation,#CreditCards,#phonecameras, it's very unlikely we will go back to the "old system".

Brief thread on testing /positivity rate.

First a shout-out to @COVID19Tracking, @alexismadrigal for putting up such a great website for gather this information, domestically. covidtracking.com/data/ 1/x
Many factors influence positive rate. How well you test (swabbing), how well you analyze in the lab, & whether reported data is correct & full (all negatives included?) are limiting factors. It is why @COVID19Tracking is critical for accountability, transparency, etc. 2/x
#SouthKorea is, perhaps, the exemplar of massive #Covid19 testing & transparency.

They tested ~6,256 yesterday: 64 were positive. Rate of slightly > 1% positive. No other place with a lower rate, as far as I know. cdc.go.kr/board/board.es…

⚠️Doctors warn that #anosmia (loss of sense of smell) and #ageusia (diminished sense of taste) have emerged as peculiar telltale signs of #COVID19 and are possible markers of #coronavirus infection.

In #Wuhan, ENT and eye doctors DIED in large numbers.

nytimes.com/2020/03/22/hea…
U.K. physicians cite reports from other countries indicating that significant numbers of #coronavirus patients experienced #anosmia: in #SouthKorea, 30% of 2,000 patients who tested positive for #COVID19 had anosmia as their major presenting symptom (these were MILD cases).💥
A high rate of transmission of #COVID to ENT doctors has been reported from #China, #Italy and #Iran, many resulting in DEATH.

In the "hot zone" of New Rochelle NY, patients who had first complained of #anosmia later tested positive for the #coronavirus.🧐

I want to share some information about why this is so serious.

Many people are wondering, understandably, why we have to take unprecedented measures, disrupting and devastating the economy and people's lives, to halt the spread of this virus. (1/20)
Today US confirmed #coronavirus cases surpassed 10,000 confirmed cases, an 8000% increase in 15 days. Of course this is a huge undercount because there have been relatively few tests done. What we do right now will determine what happens next. (2/20)
I've been focused on sharing info and advocacy related to the economic impact and the immediate impact of the shelter in place order, which are incredibly disruptive and devastating, especially for people who are already economically vulnerable. (3/20)

In the town of #Vò, they have successfully (it seems) contained a #Covid19 outbreak through aggressive testing (in the style of #SouthKorea). @roselouise93 2/x

Much as in the USA, newly documented cases may be a cause for hope rather than despair. We can neither manage policy nor hope to slow spread, if we don't know who is infected. @NateSilver538 3/x

⚠️In late January, officials in #SouthKorea told experts to quickly develop a test for #COVID19.

“We were very nervous. We believed that it could develop into a #pandemic. We acted like an army."

Just 1 week later, the 1st #coronavirus test was approved.
reuters.com/article/us-hea…
Just 7 weeks after the January meeting, #SouthKorea has tested >290,000 people, identifying >8,000 #COVID19 cases, and new cases are falling off.

The 1st case in the US was detected on the *same day* as South Korea’s, yet only 60,000 #coronavirus tests have been run.🤬
>9,000 U.S. #COVID19 cases have been confirmed, yet experts predict up to *96 million* could be infected in coming months, and 480,000 could die.

“You cannot fight what you cannot see."

Trump's TOTAL failure to quickly deploy #coronavirus testing WILL COST LIVES.🤬

⚠️@CDCgov: 38% of the 508 patients hospitalized with #coronavirus are YOUNGER (between 20-54 yo); nearly half of the 121 patients in the ICU are adults < 65 yo.

Lesson: #StayHome to protect YOURSELF and others.

1/ How early and how often have country leaders tweeted about #Coronavirus?

I downloaded the tweets of 9 Presidents and PMs, hand-coded them as Virus or Non-Virus, and plotted daily tweets from January 1 to March 16.

PDF: bit.ly/ks2020pdf
Data: bit.ly/ks2020virus
2/ Key Insights 1

- 🇰🇷@moonriver365, 🇯🇵@AbeShinzo & 🇸🇬@leehsienloong tweet less in general but have used 50%+ of all tweets since January 1 for virus-related information

- #Singapore & #SouthKorea leaders have been tweeting steady flows of prep & risk info since late January
3/ Key Insights 2

- 🇫🇷 @EmmanuelMacron, 🇬🇧@BorisJohnson & 🇺🇸@realDonaldTrump were slowest to ramp up virus-related tweets

- 🇫🇷 Macron’s first tweet about the virus (Feb 27 - see below) was almost one month later than that of all other leaders except 🇬🇧Johnson (Feb 18)

Thread:

On how a partisan PPP provincial govt hijacked our national effort to fight #coronavirusinpakistan by conducting a slick media campaign based on lies,
projecting #Sindh CM as active while throwing #Balochistan govt & #Pakistan’s fed govt under the bus as incapable.

/1
CM Sindh Murad Ali Shah is patently lying here!

Listen to what he’s saying here & then go through this thread to see how false this statement is:

“Zaireen from Iran at Taftan were to be tested for #Corona at border”

He knew it’s a lie & telling it to make himself the hero!

/2
In order to understand how PPP Jiyalas cleverly spun this issue of return of Zaireen from Iran possibly bringing #Coronavirus with them to Pakistan, let’s look at the facts:

After 18th amendment Health is a provincial subject & strictly a responsibility of provincial govts.

Second day of confinement at home. I have to say something about the Spanish situation (thread):
1) A confinement where people can go to work and public transportation is full of people due to a lower frequency of trains is totally useless to stop #covid19ESP
2) It is now clear to me that asymptomatic infections are the majority. Best evidences are the the Diamond Princess cruise ship and Vo’ Euganeo (Italy) where ALL people were tested for #COVID19.
3) Diamond Princess cruise: tests of most of the 3,711 people aboard confirmed that 634 (17%) had the virus; 328 of them did not have symptoms at the time of diagnosis. That is 51%. Of all the infected, 0,91% died (all >70 years old) sciencenews.org/article/corona…

Western countries responded very late to #COVID19. But it is not too late. Learning from leaders would be helpful. We have enough reports about the lessons from Asian countries. That's a summery how to combat #COVID19 @kakape @florian_krammer @niccijsmith @chenchenzh @C_Althaus/1
However, there's no time for policy mistakes. "Flattening" for instance is a dangerous illusion that can and does not work medium.com/@joschabach/fl… @OttoKolbl /2
Flatting is also a totally contradictive appraoch: while the epidemiological goal is to make the pandemic last longer, the economic logic is to make the pandemic as short as possible to prevent economic systems around the world from collapsing. Flattening does not make sense /3

1/n This is my first thread collecting information on the use of #chloroquine, #hydroxychloroquine & similar against #COVID19. First of all, a review paper:
sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
It's a murky situation. Nothing known for sure yet. Note difference between in vitro & in vivo
2/ There are a great many efforts to find medications useful in treatment of severe #COVID19; the ones named here are only some of the ones currently being tried or in formal trials. Note the attempt with protease inhibitors (Kaletra) too.
jstage.jst.go.jp/article/ddt/14…
3/ There is a good deal of enthusiasm among some medicos & researchers for the use of chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine against #COVID19; caution: in vitro efficacy does not necessarily mean in vivo efficacy. Odd things can happen in vivo.
