📍BREAKING—with #DeltaVariant now surging almost 50% of all #COVID19, Los Angeles County now "strongly recommends" everyone, **including folks fully vaccinated**, to wear masks indoors to curb the #Delta variant, especially when “you don’t know everyone’s vaccination status”.
2) This comes on the heels of the WHO recommending the same - that vaccinated people should still mask given then incredibly fast transmission of the #DeltaVariant and its unique severity.
3) In the UK, the #DeltaVariant is now nearly all cases, it is causing a 69% increase in cases in one week (just yesterday it was 58%), along with increasing hospitalizations and deaths.
4) We must follow the precautionary principle with #DeltaVariant - it is simply too contagious. “Fleeting” exposures of **mere seconds** is enough to infection — faster than any previously known variant of #COVID19. Australia 🇦🇺 contact tracing taught is a sobering lesson ⬇️
5) Not convinced it’s that contagious? 5-10 seconds Australian health authorities say is all that is needed with new #DeltaVariant. Sydney 🇦🇺 is currently in a form of lockdown because of Delta surge now—because they acted too late.
6) still need more proof? The “fleeting” contact case with one woman was **caught on security cameras” of a store. “They never came into contact” at all.

7) Still stubborn? Genomic data also proves it was fleeting contact infection of #DeltaVariant. Moreover, it was fleeting contact **outdoors** supposedly too.
8) Low vaccination areas is a “time bomb waiting to happen” with #DeltaVariant.

This #DeltaVariant surge will not end well for low vaccinations areas unless masks + other mitigation imposed. #COVID19

10) And don’t think you are well protected with just 1 dose of the vaccine. Studies show you need 2 doses… please please 2x vaccinate. One dose efficacy of 18-30% against #DeltaVariant infection is just too low.
11) the #DeltaVariant is the most transmissible variant known to date, warned the WHO last Friday. It is the variant #B16172 that ravaged India 🇮🇳 last 2 months.
12) For hospitalization, 2 doses of the vaccine protect you on average ~94%. But only 75% with 1 dose. Note that is not a fool proof number. Do you want to really chance those risks if you have someone in your family depending on you for their care?
13) Fauci also warns: “The problem you get into is that a single dose only provides about 30% effectiveness [against #DeltaVariant]—so that is really an issue you gotta be careful”.

He also said this before new 18% 1-dose AZ efficacy data from Scotland.
14) as result, for those that the CDC classifies “fully” vaxxed with 1 shot J&J—many experts are uncertain if J&J 1 shot alone enough - many are recommending considering a booster with an mRNA vaccine to more fully protect against #DeltaVariant. reuters.com/business/healt…
15) this was already happening in low vaccination pockets of the US already. Their 2 dose vaccination rates are much lower than rest of country. #DeltaVariant is spreading fast. We are only 3-4 weeks away from a bigger crisis.
16) We have seen this movie before elsewhere - #DeltaVariant creeps up from the underbelly of falling cases of other variants, overtakes all variants, and then causes a surge. UK 🇬🇧 is seeing hospitalization and death rising again. Don’t let this happen where you are.
17) The CDC made a grave mistake last month dropping masks for vaccinated. There are signs they are now starting to backpedal quietly… today they recommended homeless shelter workers and volunteers to wear masks “even if you’ve been fully vaccinated”. Are they different humans?!

20) the key issue is that while you’re personally protected if vaccinated (2x), the much higher transmission (2x faster transmissibility than old strain) means a higher herd immunity level is needed to to #DeltaVariant. Singapore outbreak proves it—vaccinated still transmitted.
21) this Singapore 🇸🇬 #DeltaVariant outbreak cluster was quite large. Green are vaccinated cases, grey are unvaccinated cases. Contact tracing could only find so many. covid.viz.sg
22) “herd immunity” via vaccination (please don’t try for it via natural infection) is only the threshold by which transmission slows down - but does not immediately stop. And this threshold changes based on how contagious a variant is— #DeltaVariant’s R0 is likely 6-8 we think!
23) Hence the problem is while our current vaccines protects YOU if you got it, it will still allow the #DeltaVariant coronavirus to keep transmitting and keep mutating in people —until we are well beyond the higher herd threshold (some think 85% for Delta now). Until then, mask.

25) I’ve been pushing people to switch to premium masks for half a year. Hope folks been listening.

While N95 / FFP3 best but more rare, we should at least use KN95, KF94, or FFP2 masks.

Heard an insane quote—On 4th of July: “If you're an unvaccinated individual, try to be around as many vaccinated persons as you can be”, said a scientist that I won’t name.

2) Royal Caribbean International said on Tuesday it would require unvaccinated guests over 12 years of age traveling from Florida to show proof of insurance that covers COVID-19 related medical expenses, quarantine and evacuation.
3) The new policy comes after two unvaccinated teenagers tested positive on its Adventure of the Seas ship last week and two others were infected on Celebrity Millennium earlier this month.

This ⬇️ is a dangerous argument trying to justify pediatric illness & mortality via “let it infect kids” approach. “We are all going to die one day” is a complete abdication of public health and medicine ethics. Plus ignores #LongCovid & “disability adjusted life years”. #COVID19

NEED MORE NUANCE—“Vaccines work” against the #DeltaVariant, yes—100% true. But it hides a lot of nuance—while vaccines protect YOU a lot if you get it, it will still allow virus to transmit & affect other susceptible—until hit higher vaxxed herd threshold (~85% for Delta)—Mask!🧵
2) key issue is that while you’re personally protected if 2-dose vaccinated (60% AZ & 79-88% Pfizer efficacy, 94% hospitalization), the much higher transmission (2x faster transmissibility than old) means a higher herd level needed to stop #DeltaVariant from hitting others.
3) Singapore Delta outbreak proves it—vaccinated still transmitted. In this #DeltaVariant cluster alone, among 29 vaccinated who were infected, 21 transmissions events were between vaccinated-to-vaccinated or vaccinated-to-unvaccinated. That is a lot! Image
