Today marks 6 months since 1/6, when our nation suffered a violent & deadly assault on our democracy.

We at @bradybuzz are proud to unite with @TrumanProject, @TrumanCenter, @CAPActionGVP/@amprog, @NAACP & @ADL to demand action and answers.

We represent organizations with different goals & issues:

national security
gun violence
racial justice
combating antisemitism & hate
defending democracy

But we agree: January 6th can never happen again.

Our 4 organizations have come together united with the conviction that we must recognize #January6th as a direct attack on the very fabric of our country.

To get answers around 1/6 is *not* a partisan issue.

It is not about what side of the aisle you are on.

It is a show of care for our democracy. For our safety. For our livelihoods. For our country. For our futures. #January6th #January6thCommission
Six months later, the events of #January6th continue to be shocking.

In modern U.S. history, has anything been more lethal to the heart of our republic and come from within, fomented at the top levels of government?
We know the answer.

And that is why our diverse organizations, which are representative of our democracy, are coming together to demand action.

We understand the difficulties of launching a Commission to investigate #January6th.

But if we fail to investigate the greatest threat to democracy in modern times, then we are doomed to repeat it.

That cannot be an option.

This we know:

Although January 6 was shocking, it was also predictable.

It continues a long history of the violence that erupts when white supremacy, hate, xenophobia, antisemitism & anti-Blackness combine. #January6th #January6thCommission

Violent white supremacy was foundational for chattel slavery & the genocide of Native Americans.

We just marked 26 years since the Oklahoma City bombing — also fueled by anti-government ideologies and fetishization of militia culture & white supremacy.
Hateful ideologies & insufficient protections against gun violence have enabled deadly mass shootings at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Tree of Life Synagogue, Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, and a Walmart in El Paso.

We must address these roots.
FBI Director Christopher Wray recently named white supremacist extremism as “the biggest chunk of our domestic terrorism portfolio."

He specified that within violent white supremacist movements, the “militia” movement is the biggest factor. #January6th washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/…
Why is this not surprising?

Because Second Amendment extremists and white supremacist violence have a long, sordid interdependence. #January6th wnyc.org/story/white-su…
The Second Amendment was established in part to protect state militias to suppress insurrections.

But the gun lobby pushes an entirely different, incendiary interpretation...
Take this 1994 insurrectionist quote from NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre:

"The people have the right, must have the right, to take whatever measures necessary, including force, to abolish oppressive government.”

Make no mistake, Wayne LaPierre’s invocation of “the people” rising up against “oppressive government” is a dog whistle to white supremacists.

Time and again, history has demonstrated that when we combine the forces of hate, anti-democratic principles, disinformation, and white supremacy, violence is inevitable.

We must act.
We must investigate.
We must protect our democracy, our country, and our lives. #January6th
That is why our 4 organizations have united today.

And that is why we refuse to turn away from the ugliness of #January6th & toward the truth that we must tackle our country's white supremacist extremism.

According to @GunDeaths, the San Jose shooting today was the 24th workplace shooting of 2021. Those 24 shootings have seen 34 killed and 24 injured.

The San Jose tragedy was at least the 230th mass shooting of 2021.

Gun violence in America is a public health crisis.

Thx to @TishJames, we were just delivered news of a MAJOR legal win against the NRA.

Meanwhile, *right now* @bradybuzz leaders are testifying for vital gun violence prevention bills in both Colorado and Nevada.

Naturally, the NRA is opposing both of these bills.

The Colorado bill (SB 21-256) would empower localities to adopt gun safety measures that meet the needs of their own local communities.

That's common-sense. It's exactly what local govts should do, esp in the face of CO's gun suicide crisis.

But the NRA thinks it's "confusing."
Right now, Coloradan & gun violence survivor @MaishaFields is testifying in support of this crucial gun violence prevention bill.

Major urban areas here in CO have seen astronomical spikes in gun violence. Coloradans need sensible and lifesaving solutions, like SB 21-256. #COleg

This decision is a historic win for the rule of law and a sure sign of defeat for the NRA and its corrupt leadership.

The NRA cannot escape justice. Americans are sick of their lethal abuse.

2 years ago today, a white nationalist opened fire at the Chabad of Poway synagogue.

We remember Lori Gilbert-Kaye, who was killed, & survivors Noya Dahan, Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein & Almog Peretz.

We also NEED to talk about the specific AR-15-style rifle that was used.

This weapon has been the weapon of choice for mass shooters in America.

In fact, it is the same type of AR-15-style rifle used by the gunmen in:

3 years ago today, a gunman used an AR-15 to senselessly murder 4 young people at a Waffle House in Nashville. They had their whole lives ahead of them.

We remember their names:

The 2018 Waffle House gunman wasn't stopped by a "good guy with a gun" — as is almost never the case. (This is a myth pushed by the gun lobby.)
