How does this happen, & what are the implications?
"Your data isn't just about you. It's about how it can be used against every person you know - and people you don't - to shape behaviour unconsciously."
"Worn down by a decade of austerity, and mesmerised by and addicted to new technology and mindless entertainment, the people failed to take warnings of the dangers of their new leader seriously..."
Libertarian John Malone is on the board of directors for the grotesquely libertarian free-market Cato Institute, founded by the Koch Foundation in 1974.
And Malone donated US$250,000 to Donald Trump's inauguration in 2017. He's generous like that. 🧐
Since 9/11, the number of UK/US newspaper articles about terrorism increased exponentially - despite attacks in Europe & North America being much more common during the 1970/80s & typically carried out by left/right-wing nationalists.
Sheffield University's @JaredAhmad1 makes a powerful & persuasive argument:
'Aside from the drama and newsworthiness of the 9/11 attacks, a major reason why terrorism dominated headlines was because politicians and other “elite” figures began talking about terrorism. A lot.'
'Studies reveal how, in the days, weeks and months after 9/11, politicians and security sources (often anonymous and unnamed) dominated the news of the terror threat during this period and helped encourage an atmosphere of patriotic fervour.'
Do the #USA🇺🇸 & #UK🇬🇧 have a disproportionately large proportion of idiots?
Or do they have Governments & news media influenced by rich free-market fundamentalists who want to deregulate everything, make people live & work in unsafe environments, & who value profit over lives?
Hungary, Brazil, the USA & UK are among the top 25 worst-performing countries on earth for COVID deaths/million of population.
Of these countries, the UK & USA have *BY FAR* the highest number of cases over the last 7 days - more than twice as many as the next highest, Brazil.
And just to be clear:
Brazil 🇧🇷 (population 211 million) - 99,846 cases last 7 days.
UK 🇬🇧 (population 68 million) - 206,462 cases last 7 days.
USA 🇺🇸 (population 333 million) - 932,988 cases last 7 days.
Out of these countries, the UK is the worst performing.
In 2013, at the annual Margaret Thatcher Lecture, Boris Johnson said inequality is essential to fostering "the spirit of envy" & hailed greed as a "valuable spur to economic activity".
The damaged, lying, opportunistic hypocrite also demonised Romanians.
Johnson warned that the accession of Romania to the EU meant that London could do nothing to stop the "entire population of Transylvania" from "pitching their tents in Marble Arch".
Romania's foreign minister expressed his outrage at "xenophobic, populist" politicians in the UK.
The deregulatory free-market ideology that he & his catastrophic & cruel Government subscribe to seem to relish deepening inequality, & in his speech he warned that the growing competition Britain faced in a globalised economy meant that inequality would deepen.
