Questions!

When will you ban vaccine mandates in Alberta- AHS needs to back off.

Kenney says his gov changed legislation to ensure vaccines aren't mandated for public.

That said, some employers will require them- like AHS. Says it's a long-standing policy for AHS.
Kenney says in northern Alberta, an unvaxxed worker with symptoms showed up at a hospice and spread it to six other workers and some of the patients- some who died.

Says unfair for patients/co-workers to be put in that position.
Where were you (as COVID surged in Alberta)?

Kenney says he has been working this week at his office.

Says this was just his second two-week vacation since 2015.

Says its important to recharge his batteries- but that he was in touch with key personnel throughout.
HEADS UP!

Kenney says there will be a news conference *this week* to address the surge of COVID impacting Alberta's health care system.

#yeg #Yyc #ableg #Covid19ab
Kenney says COVID does still pose a risk to young adults, especially 20-49.

He believes half of the hospitalizations are in that age range, which is he is urging people in that demo who haven't been vaxxed do so now.
What should Canada do about Taliban?

Kenney says he should tread carefully, and Alberta doesn't have a policy per se.

Heart goes out to people there under Taliban, tragic to see the "problematic evacuation that wasn't well planned that CND citizens were left behind."
Kenney says he has profound gratitude to the Canadians who served in Afghanistan - diplomats, aid workers, journalists.
Do you foresee lockdowns in Alberta?

Kenney says NO to lockdowns, saying vaccination is the way to go.

But could take targeted actions "if we do see this wave jeopardizing the health care system."
When are you going to bring back mask mandate?

Kenney says people can wear masks if they want to.

There is still an Alberta mask mandate that applies to transit/taxis/hospitals.

But they'll continue to monitor the situation.
What about mental health/addictions?

Kenney says Alberta lost 1000+ to overdoses last year.

Some of that tied to COVID pressures.

Adds CERB was cash injection for those trapped by addiction.
Kenney says addictions/mental health issues predates COVID.

Touts his governments funding, new beds and facilities, along with fee removal for gov treatment centres.

But adds more needs to be done.
How will you handle this insane fourth wave?

Kenney says this is the wave of the unvaccinated.

If Alberta had 90% coverage, we would not have meaningful pressure on health care system.

Calls COVID-zero a catastrophic policy.

Urges people to get vaxxed and act responsibly.
Why are you on FB instead of a media avail?

He says he's here in plain view, that it goes straight to regular Albertans, that's accountability right there.

Gets more questions in here than in press conference.
Has Dr. Hinshaw resigned?

Kenney calls the rumour "ridiculous", says he just finished a session with here.
Can you talk about new developments on Line 5 pipeline?

Kenney says it's still operational, says Michigan governor have been campaigning to suspend it over environmental concerns.

Says there is a mediation process between governor and Enbridge, and ongoing state challenge
What's your approach of Trudeau bribing provinces?

Kenney says he disagrees with Trudeau on many things including their approach on federalism, wants a PM who respects the west after the election.

His position is that fed $$$ should be with no strings attached.
Points to Quebec, says they get what they want.

Cites their "subsidized daycare scheme", funding it through equalization funding from tax dollars from Alberta.

Claims that Quebec gets $6B for daycare that they'll now use for something else.
Kenney wants same treatment as Quebec.

But adds that this question calling Trudeau a communist undermines the person's case, says it is not a fair characterization of JT's policies.
How do you explain high infection rates with vaccine uptake where it is?

Kenney says most in hospital aren't vaccinated.

To those who say kids could transmit- says that studies show kids generally do not transmit the disease and have low risk for severe outcomes.
Kenney says 32 minors died in car accidents a couple years ago.

That compares to zero COVID deaths for kids in Alberta so far.
Kenney says 9% of people over 65 who aren't vaccinated, and that most of the people who are dying are the elderly unvaccinated.

Says they're doing everything they can to convince them to get the jab.
What does Teri Bryant as Chief firearms officer mean for average gun owners?

Says a common sense Albertan is now in charge of administration of federal firearm rules here.

Says having someone focused on criminals and firearms than law-abiding gun owners is the right step.
When is the job creation going to happen?

Kenney says it's happening now- we have seen 73K new jobs created since January, and that Alberta leads Canada in economic growth this year.
Kenney says COVID restrictions on tourism are hurting that sector.

Says federal COVID incentives are also making it difficult for employers to find workers.
Will you ban private businesses from having vaccine passports?

Kenney says government won't step in and tell private businesses how to run their businesses.

This is how the free market works.
Why are gas prices so high- lower them, and tell Trudeau to deal with it!

Kenney says government doesn't set prices, thankfully.

Adds they are high - that's a reflection of high commodity prices, which means more investment and jobs in Alberta.
Any more job announcements?

Kenney says some have been postponed until after the federal election, but there are "exciting" things coming up.

He says some jobs will depend on federal election result- points to petrochemical industry.
On press conferences, Kenney says he did a few at the beginning of the month- and did more than most other Canadian premiers.

Says he regularly does pressers with significant funding announcements- says it's typically inappropriate to hold those during federal elex.
What about reducing energy bill fees?

Kenney says they did scrap the carbon tax- but federal one came back in.

Adds that transmission charges are a pain- but its a challenge b/c it's a legacy decision from 10-12 years ago based on prediction Alberta econ wouldn't stop growing
Kenney does say the government is deep into study on how to address energy prices.

Says the only cash way would be for the government to subsidize transmission costs with tax dollars- calls it a shell game.
How is Alberta approaching hydrogen?

Kenney calls this his fave question of the night.

Says upwards of 10 global companies have discussed locating big investments here.
Any progress on vaccine under 12?

Kenney says trials are ongoing.

Says FDA trial is three months away- expects some recommendations this fall- but says regulators can't rush this.
Kenney says he hopes the trials come back and say they are 100% safe.

But on the risk side- he says zero COVID deaths under 20 in Alberta versus "let's say 30 to 40 automobile deaths in that age range."

Says fewer kids hospitalized with COVID since March/20 than last flu season
Is this pre-recorded live feed?

Kenney says they shared this question to show it's real- his phone shows the actual time!
Kenney again on vacation.

Says he hears some people were angry about his taking an extended vacation.

He thinks everybody - especially in high-pressure job- recharging batteries in important for productivity and judgement.
Kenney says he never criticized when Notley took vacation time- saying she did a better job for going on vacation and recharging.
Is it against the rules for Trudeau to be spending like this ?

Kenney says Trudeau can make commitments if his party is re-elected, voters will have to pass judgement on the promises.
What about those whose surgeries are postponed?

Kenney says more postponements now, calls it regrettable.

Says AHS will prioritize and ensure urgent surgery happens.

Longer-term, says charter surgical facilities are being expanded b/c they operate more efficiently.
Why would a business come to Alberta vs freedom-loving South Dakota?

Kenney says if you love SD's policy, then you have to acknowledge their death rate being five times higher than ours.
Would you have approached COVID any differently now?

Says that facility shutdown to addicts early on may have accelerated drug crisis- pained him, since corrected.

Adds treating big box stores and small biz differently early on a mistake.

Q- You need to stop open and closing, you're hurting people's mental health?

A- Kenney says that's one of the reasons Alberta has treated restrictions as a last resort, unlike say Australia and NZ hard lockdowns.
Kenney knows everyone wants predictability - which is why he erred on the side of caution this summer.

But he says the disease changes, so too does human behaviour.

Adds that 20% unvaxxed adults are the largest part of the hospital crunch.
Q- Do you remember when you said vax passports were illegal?

A - He remembers, but he says he always said there could be exceptions.

Adds he sought legal advice from lawyers about this and they said there can be circumstances that justify a policy framework like this.

QUESTIONS!

Q- Will new rules be enough to prevent hospitals bein overwhelmed, and when will we see effects?

A- Says it's up to Albertans to follow the rules to know if they'll work.

Hinshaw says it typically takes 1-2 weeks to see impact on cases, longer for hospitals.
Q- Do you expect a challenge getting people on board and dealing with enforcement?

A- Hinshaw believes the majority of Albertans want to do the right thing. Says she's heard from biz that they want to follow the rules.

Adds that non-immunized are also inclined to follow rules
Q- do you have enough staff to enforce?

A- Dr. Yiu says they do have a finite staff, but she's confident they have enough inspectors.

Q- Do you believe you are blameless for what's happening in hospitals?

Kenney says they had fairly good case to hospital ratios, and based plan on those.

Now, a lot of folks who are getting sick aren't being tested and there's no early warning.
Q - What were you waiting for before acting, despite calls from medical experts?

Kenney says they shared modelling a couple weeks ago and took steps then.

But numbers have gone past that, and he received new recommendations on Monday, and they're implementing them today.
Q- What responsibility do you take for health care staff having to make life or death decisions in triage?

Kenney says they have to increase vaccination and reduce transmission.

Says these are very real measures announced today to address this.

Q- How can you compare potential anger this summer over keeping restrictions with 2500 dead Albertans?

Kenney says fatality rates are lower here, says restrictions are a last and limited resort.

Says you can't put 4.5M people under a permanent lockdown.
Kenney says they have used restrictions as a necessary tool to intervene during waves to help the health care system.

Says vaccinations are still the solution.
Q- Do you apologize or not for your pandemic response?

Kenney says he apologies for shift from pandemic to endemic and having been too enthusiastic about maintaining a full openness.

But DOES NOT apologize for lifting restrictions in the Open For Summer Plan.

Rick Bell time.

To what degree what happened since January 1 is a reflection of your leadership? There are many people angry with you.

"Albertans deserve more than 'I apologize'"

#yeg #yyc #ableg #Covid19ab
Kenney reiterates his apology.

But says he didn't think they were wrong to life restrictions in July.
Kenney says he DOES NOT apologize for lifting restrictions in July based on increasing vaccination rates and data from other areas around the world.

Says there would have been too much anger to keep lockdown-style policies.

Questions!

You said you were wrong, but will there more consequences for your miscalculation?

Kenney says they are focused on beds and vaccination.

Says there will be plenty of time to do retrospective after the pandemic ends.
Q - There's a pattern here- you mock experts, but then impose measures. Why does this keep happening?

Kenney says our fatality rate is lower than US and Europe, and hey had to consider mental health, opioid deaths and things like obesity.

Tried to create a balance.
Kenney adds that Alberta and Saskatchewan do face a unique challenge with low vaccinations overall.

Does point to Calgary having an 83% rate, including some neighbourhoods that were low.

Admits Alberta is 10 points below national average.
