Keys to co-design: prioritise relationships, share power, build capacity (not so much in young people but among professionals who are not so used to working as peers vs in hierarchies), participatory methods @kellyanagram#YHFsummit
Co-design quick test (not automatically bad if answer no, but know what you're doing):
Is there mutual learning (are young people in the same room)?
Are you doing some kind of designing?
Are we testing ideas before rushing to implementation? MTC
Do young people get to be part of decisions?
Are they being recognised for their time (not just via $ but that also)?
Can young people "come as they are"?
. @kellyanagram delivering a masterclass on co-design - what it is, and isn't....(wont' share it all as it's their intellectual property) #YHFSummit
Risks of reproducing the status quo through co-design, including where young people are talked at and about #YHFSummit
"Partnering with/young people leading" - key to helping co-design. "Asking young people to work with an existing problem frame", one that hinders....all being explored here in live co-design exercise at #YHFSummit
Have popped into other workshop session at #YHFSummit:
Young people influencing change: how to have impact and influence as an advocate, with Neil Pharoah, founder of #RainbowLabor & more chf.org.au/blog/young-peo…)
"What's your WIFM ('what's in it for me?')?"
Pharoah asks #YHFSummit to think if they had 30 seconds with a Minister/other policy/power broker, what would you say.....
And some tips:
Pharoah talking re importance of framing when you are campaigning, particularly as we head into federal election time: eg "marriage equality" vs "freedom to marry" #YHFSummit
#YHFsummit participant: "Speaking about this has reminded me about Raise our voice running their youth voice in parliament campaign for people under the age of 21! See here :raiseourvoiceaustralia.com/youthvoice"
Really difficult to get past blame-shifting between jurisidictions in Australian politics, when so many "grey" areas of interdependency, says Pharoah. #YHFsummit
"Most of the rubber hits the road on health at the state level....has lot more influence than we would like to admit (and as we've seen in COVID), but subject to vertical fiscal imbalance (feds have the $$).": Pharoah.
Meeting with MPs or Ministers? More likely to get there if you have a local/portfolio connection. So if you chasing a marginal seat MP, emphasise breadth of your connections across issues, check Census/pop data: Pharaoh #YHFSummit
The meeting with an MP should be only 10pc of your effort: follow them on social media, read their maiden speech (they declare their passions/background in them), do your research on them & the topic - don't just talk, listen too....Pharaoh #YHFSummit
Politicians will remember how you made them feel after a meeting, says Pharaoh. Send a thankyou note after. Be considerate/respectful. More chance of getting another/regular meetings. #YHFSummit
Shifting the focus from health to wellbeing in governments: looking at 'building back better' not just from pandemic, but intergenerational challenges/inequities that have continued to play out. Look beyond GDP as indicator of success: @SandroDemaio#YHFSummit
"What gets measured gets done." @SandroDemaio says we all know individual worth not reflected in income, and it's the same for Australia/other countries. If all we measure is $ generated (GDP), that leads to perverse incentives, profit over health. #YHFSummit
Robert Yates of @ChathamHouse and @LSHTM comes to us from a sunny London! We are so lucky to have him chat to us about how palliative care can get a "decent crack of the whip" on universal health reforms. #21OPCC
@ChathamHouse@LSHTM "This is an opportunity for radical change. We should be prepared and get organised." But what is Universal Health Coverage? Important to nail down the definition. #21OPCC Simple definition here 👇
@ChathamHouse@LSHTM But the longer definition makes it clear that palliative care is part of the continuum. Wherever you see UHC, we must insist on palliative care not being crowded out by curative services. #21OPCC
