This is a historic moment—with an outpouring of support for #reproductiverights from the Biden administration (@POTUS), celebrated professional athletes like Megan Rapinoe (@mpinoe) and literally THOUSANDS of people who have had abortions.
“...Individuals from sports, law, medicine, government, and diverse walks of life are stepping forward to have their voices heard by the Supreme Court." - Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO.

“…The morning of Sept. 6, I provided an abortion to a woman who, though still in her first trimester, was beyond the state’s new limit.
I acted because I had a duty of care to this patient, as I do for all patients, & because she has a fundamental right to receive this care.…”
“...I fully understood that there could be legal consequences — but I wanted to make sure that Texas didn’t get away with its bid to prevent this blatantly unconstitutional law from being tested.”
Our client, Dr. Alan Braid recounts why he violated #SB8, a #Texas law that bans all abortion services in the state after about six weeks—before most people know they are pregnant.
🚨#BREAKING🚨 The U.S. Supreme Court has denied our emergency request to block Texas’ radical abortion ban #SB8 from taking effect.
“We are devastated that the Supreme Court has refused to block a law that blatantly violates #RoevWade. Right now, people seeking abortion across Texas are panicking—they have no idea where or when they will be able to get an abortion, if ever...”—Nancy Northup, Center CEO
“..Texas politicians have succeeded for the moment in making a mockery of the rule of law, upending abortion care in Texas, and forcing patients to leave the state – if they have the means – to get constitutionally protected healthcare...” —Nancy Northup, Center CEO
“Right now, Roe v. Wade is effectively a dead letter in Texas. We are deeply concerned that the Supreme Court has yet to take action on our urgent request to enjoin Texas’ near-total ban on abortions...” —Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO
“...Texas’ pernicious abortion ban is now in effect, upending abortion care in the state, with devastating consequences for those without the means to go elsewhere to exercise their constitutional rights...” —Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO
“...Patients are panicking, with no idea how they will get the abortion they need. This case is not over, and we will be continuing to fight in court until this law is struck down.” —Nancy Northup, Center president and CEO
#BREAKING: We filed an emergency request with the U.S. Supreme Court to block Texas’ radical six-week abortion ban #SB8 before it takes effect on September 1. If #SCOTUS does not intervene, abortion after six weeks into pregnancy will come to an abrupt stop in Texas on Wednesday.
❗ Approximately 85% to 90% of people who obtain an abortion in Texas are at least six weeks into pregnancy, meaning this law would prohibit nearly all abortions in the state.
❗ If this law is allowed to take effect, the average one-way driving distance for Texans seeking an abortion would increase 20-fold, from 12 miles to 248 miles, according to new research from @Guttmacher.
A statement from Nancy Northup, Center president & CEO, on today’s lawsuit filing to block Texas law #SB8: “If this oppressive law takes effect, it will decimate abortion access in Texas--and that’s exactly what it is designed to do..."
“...The state has put a bounty on the head of any person or entity who so much as gives a patient money for an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, before most people know they are pregnant. Worse, it will intimidate loved ones from providing support for fear of being sued...”
“...And this is happening to Texans as we are fighting another direct challenge to Roe v. Wade in the Supreme Court, out of Mississippi. We will pursue every legal avenue we can to block this and other pernicious laws.”
