A thread - in English - about the German federal elections and what we know so far. #btw21
1) The Social Democrats will be the strongest party in the parliament.
2) The Christian Democrats have experienced an unprecedented loss.
3) The distance in seats, however, between the two largest parties is not large enough, so as to make either of them being the party of the future chancellor implausible.
4) For the first time, a three-party coalition is likely.
5) The king makers are now the parties #3 and #4. The Greens and the Liberals (the Liberals are liberal in the European sense). They announced today to talk between the two of them first, an unprecedented move in coalition negotiating etiquette in German federal elections.
6) Bargaining theory suggests that the Christian Democrats, despite having a few fewer seats than the Social Democrats have currently a slight edge in the upcoming negotiations. Their and their candidate's only goal is to keep the chancellorship and thus power.
They have essentially no other political goals. The Social Democrats and their candidate are more constrained by their (left of center) party base. But a lot will depend on the moves and the momentum in the upcoming days.
7) But I do think we can say that German politics will become a lot more green and a lot more liberal in the European sense. This is also confirmed by the young vote, which overwhelmingly prefers the Greens and the Liberals. Both parties have a strong momentum for the future.
8) Some good news: the political extremes have lost resoundingly. The right-wing populist/nationalist AfD has lost, and there is an outside chance that the left-wing socialist Left might not even be in the next parliament. They lost, too.
Neither will play any role whatsoever in the forming of the government. None. And this is good. This is also supported by the fact that a rogue firebrand right-wing candidate of the Christian Democrats for a parliament seat lost resoundingly.
Conclusion: the next few days/weeks will be super interesting and will decide between two three-party coalitions, which will both feature the Greens and the Liberals, one with the Christian Democrats at the top, one with the Social Democrats at the top.
Only if the upstart Greens and Liberals demand too much in the negotiations, is there still an outside chance that the Social Democrats and Christian Democrats might join forces again, this time with a Social Democrat Chancellor. End Thread.

Thread.
Erläuterung: in einem gut funktionierenden Arbeitsmarkt zählt eben nicht, wer du bist, woher du kommst, zB, sondern was du kannst, was du beitragen kannst.
Thread. This month it is 20 years that I have been living in the United States (with a few interruptions). In August 2001, I arrived at @YaleEconomics for math camp, taught by Guiseppe Moscarini, who has since not only been a great mentor for me but also a friend.
At Yale, I have met so many interesting grad students (many of whom have become eminent economists) and teachers.
I was of course totally naïve and, at the same time, a bit cocky about my abilities. But I was taught well at @YaleEconomics . One month in, the horrific September 11 attacks happened, not even a two-hour train ride away from New Haven. I will never forget these TV images, and
