We’ve been told that public health orders are made by the experts, particularly the PHO. Mask mandates were implemented through a health order, like we saw expanded to >5s today. But now vaccine mandates are left to 60 individual school districts. 1/ #bcpoli #bced
The patchwork system leaves room for vulnerability, and places the onus on each school district for public health decisions and respecting staff privacy. The @bctf has said this is the wrong approach. 2/ #bcpoli #bced
We know how the Delta variant plays out in areas of high vs low vaccination across BC. We are seeing our children infected, & the risks of long-COVID on their development are serious. Every person should be equally protected by gov’t, regardless of where they live. 3/ #bcpoli
Leaving this decision to school boards is an abdication of responsibility from the @bcndp in this time of crisis. We cannot come out of this without good leadership, and I hope to see them step up and protect our schools. 4/4 #bcpoli #bced

Today the @IEA released their 2021 World Energy Outlook. For the 1st time it included a scenario where the 1.5ºC climate targets are actually met.

TL;DR - @bcndp must choose between meeting net-zero pledges or expanding fossil fuels. Not both. 1/ #bcpoli
iea.org/reports/world-…
The implications of this report are significant for every gov’t in the world, but here in BC and Canada where we have governments pledging to meet net-zero targets whilst still investing in fossil fuels the report is particularly damning. 2/ #bcpoli
Achieving a 1.5ºC net-zero means no new fossil fuels. Not just because we wouldn’t meet net-zero but because achieving it means demand for fossil fuels falls drastically, making all gov’t backed projects like CGL or TMX economically unviable. 3/ #bcpoli Image

We haven’t been dealt a bad hand. What we did was loosen restrictions despite rising variant cases, allow out-of-province travel, stall in-school mask mandates, & did not enforce orders or tailor the message. The 3rd wave is the outcome of that inaction.1/ #bcpoli #COVID19 #bced
Neither the methods nor the messaging is working. It cannot only be up to individuals to deal with this crisis. We need coordinated response from gov’t that shows they are taking threat of COVID & #LongCovid seriously for healthcare workers and people. 2/ #COVID19 #bcpoli
As #VariantsOfConcern rise, modelling predicts they will become the majority of cases in our immediate future. Some modelling predicts they currently make up 40% of cases in BC. #Ontario is at >60%. Instead of bracing for impact, let’s mitigate it now. 3/ #COVID19 #bcpoli #bced

For us to feel “we’re in this together” we need leadership that brings us together, shows respect & trust for people, & is willing to acknowledge mistakes are inevitable, but that they can be corrected. Humility, compassion, and empathy are needed right now. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC
With rising case numbers and variants, and after yesterday’s press conference that left many feeling deeply frustrated. There are many actions @bcndp could take to build trust - but it largely comes down to transparency... 2/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC #bced
Share with the public all studies that are informing decisions made by the PHO and gov't. If there are studies being rejected, explain why. It’s not enough to tell the public what decisions are being made - show the evidence for making those decisions. 3/ #bcpoli #COVID19 #bced

Today, the B.C. Supreme Court ruled in favor of forestry company Teal Jones Group and their injunction application to remove protestors and blockades from #FairyCreek. It sets the stage for #OldGrowth logging in the last intact old growth valley on Southern Van Island. 1/ #bcpoli
It is time for the @bcndp to step in, revoke permits for Teal Jones Group and come to the table with conservation financing to provide real options for a path forward to save #FairyCreek. 2/ #bcpoli #OldGrowth
.@jjhorgan promised to implement all of the recommendations of the #OldGrowth Review Panel, including immediate deferrals of logging in high-value at-risk forests. The #FairyCreek watershed is the definition of a high-risk ecosystem. 3/ #bcpoli

Instead of blaming young people and telling them “not to blow it for us” maybe government could look at the data and systemic conditions that are leading to higher case counts in this demographic and step up to help them. Just like we did for seniors. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19
Consider precarious, low-paid, public-facing work they can’t afford to miss because the economic downturn hit them the hardest. Having lots of roommates because there is no affordable housing. A reliance on public transit, young children in care, caring for other relatives. 2/
& yes, some are gathering w/ friends in unsafe settings. That is not OK. But maybe we can help them with that too - clearer comms that actually reach them, support w/ mental health care, affordable higher education & employment opportunities that give them hope for the future. 3/

I am incredibly worried about BC’s spiking #COVID19 rates - and honestly confused by the mixed messaging we are getting from the BC government. It feels as though we are just watching the cases rise instead of rising to the fight. 1/ #bcpoli #COVID19BC #bced
We gave up on bending the curve, then we gave up on flattening the curve. Now we seem to be giving up as the case numbers spike. There are immediate steps this government could take to get us back on track /2 #bcpoli #COVID19
Increase testing, resume daily briefings, provide case numbers on weekends. Answer every question being asked by the press, with multiple follow ups. It doesn’t always have to be Dr Henry & Minister Dix - but have officials who can answer questions every day /3 #bcpoli #COVID19
