As the #Halloween weekend kicks off, we ask everyone to keep safety in mind.
๐ŸŽƒ When handing out treats please wash or sanitize your hands and wear a non-medical mask when answering the door.
๐ŸŽƒ Drop treats into childrenโ€™s bags to avoid multiple children putting their hands in a common container.
๐ŸŽƒ If you are unwell or self-isolating for any reason, please do not give out treats. Children should also stay at home if they are unwell.
๐ŸŽƒ Be respectful of households that are not handing out treats and skip any home that has a sign on the door.
๐ŸŽƒ Remind children to wash their hands before they leave to trick or treat, and when they return home and before eating any treats.
๐ŸŽƒ Parents should also remind children to physically distance as much as possible when getting treats at each home.
๐ŸงŸโ€โ™‚๏ธ Stay spooky (and safe) Newfoundland and Labrador! #HappyHalloween!

As you are aware, we currently have a COVID-19 outbreak on the Burin Peninsula. The majority of these cases are in children under the age of 12, who are not yet eligible for vaccination. ๐Ÿงต THREAD // (1/15)
Until now, the evidence indicated that COVID-19 cases in schools were more often the result of transmission that occurred in the community. This is changing. (2/15)
@EasternHealthNL's investigation into the current outbreak revealed the spread of COVID-19 occurred in school, throughout grades K-6. (3/15)

Since we began re-opening we have not seen evidence of increased viral transmission stemming from either the outbreak or new sources. In addition, we have not had any new non-epi-linked cases related to the outbreak in at least 28 days, which is two incubation periods.
Six weeks ago, during the week of February 10-16, we reported 260 new cases. We are down to 1 case over the last week, and now 1 case reported today.

Tomorrow marks one year since my first #covid19nfld briefing. This anniversary gives us pause to reflect on everything that has happened in the last year, both the bad and the good. We have all been impacted by this pandemic, in different ways, some of us much more profoundly.
How it started.... how it's going! (Little throw back to my first COVID update!)
โค Despite the heartache, struggles and disappointments, we also have seen this pandemic bring out some of the best in humanity:

THREAD โš  Effective 12:01 am March 13, the Avalon region will move to Alert Level 4 and areas outside the Avalon will move to Alert level 3.
2๏ธโƒฃ We must be mindful that while our provincial epidemiology is in a very good place, the same cannot be said outside the province. We therefore remain at risk of importation of the virus and the variants of concern that are now in greater circulation.
3๏ธโƒฃ We saw first-hand how rapidly the B117 variant spread in our province. Thatโ€™s why we must ease restrictions slowly. We will closely monitor the epidemiology as we open to ensure that there is no increased transmission.

#IWD THREAD ๐Ÿงต Today is International Womenโ€™s Day, a day that is very near and dear to me personally. Iโ€™d like to acknowledge the remarkable women across our health care system who are working to support our COVID response.
While I may be the face of the response to the pandemic, there are thousands of women across our province who have contributed to Newfoundland and Labradorโ€™s efforts and successes.
