Imagine someone invaded your country, rounded up ALL the academics, scientists, artists, musicians, religious leaders, and all political and ideological opponents, and killed them point blank in mass purges.
Imagine the invasion forces instruct you at gunpoint that you may no longer speak your national language, practice your culture, or anything related to your national identity. They burn books and tear down public signage, quickly changing the names of streets and cities.
Imagine that the occupier then killed millions in other “smaller”genocides to ensure compliance with the national and ethnic destruction. Millions killed in a span of a year to ensure the message that any fight for your national identity will be your demise.
Imagine that after slaughtering millions upon millions in mass purges, many millions more via various genocides, and millions more in gulag concentration camps, that the aggressor convinced the world the victim nations willing and eagerly JOINED this evil regime.
Imagine people abroad calling this evil, genocidal, murderous, authoritarian regime a “socialist paradise”, and even romanticized the day to day suffering and humiliation people endured standing in lines all day for a piece of rotten and inedible meat.
Imagine western journalists and politicians deliberately lying about the horrendous and unimaginable evils of this bloody regime so no one would even stop to think that the “worker’s paradise” was in fact hell.
Imagine after 70 years of being occupied, oppressed, tortured and murdered, having absolutely everything about who you are destroyed, and after being told that you are less than the occupier, you finally have a moment of freedom. You escape. And the world tells you, “No, stay.”
Imagine after generations of unimaginable suffering, you are finally able to regain your independence, and the “morally and politically superior” democratic world does not support your independence from the bloody aggressor. And you have to fight for recognition against all odds.
Imagine, with little meaningful support, and being viewed as a “have not” “less than” state, understood by the world through the occupier’s hateful lens, that you make great strides to pull out from under the greatest destructive forces we can imagine. You start to build.
Imagine that your efforts are dismissed because they do not meet a mythical utopian standard of perfection that not one nation in the world has itself managed. Imagine you believe that you are a failure since you haven’t attained that utopia.
Imagine that your historical occupier and destroyer wants to revive that evil, genocidal, authoritarian regime. The people begin to celebrate one of the most heinous figures of that regime. The cult of the bloody dictator is revived.
Imagine that at the same time, your historical occupier has invaded you, but convinced the world that you have a civil conflict it merely supports. No one officially recognizes they are the aggressor waging war on you, but they claim to “support you”.
In the meantime, while fighting an existential militarily and political battle against your nuclear arms bearing aggressor, you are told that your cultural identity is not relevant. That the thing the aggressor seeks to destroy is not something for you to build and protect.
Imagine you are told that your identity should not be what it was before 70 years of active destruction & suppression, & that to be “progressive” & “modern”, you should maintain the identity imposed by force on you by your genocidal occupier who is again waging war on you.
Imagine you are actively encouraged to maintain the identity of the aggressor. The one you were told not to leave who is again working to destroy you. This is “democratic”. To try to revive the national identity your aggressor wants to crush is “backward” and harshly criticized.
Imagine trying to fashion a national political image that would unify the state, and strengthen it against the aggressor’s efforts to crush it, and having no support for this essential means of defence.
Imagine being told that asking everyone in the country to know the indigenous language is “discriminatory”, even while the aggressor absolutely eradicates it from all the territories it occupies in your country, replacing it fully with its own.
Imagine being told not to defend yourself militarily. Imagine the agreements your friends made with you to support you being disregarded and ignored. You stuck to your end of the bargain, and no one did what was required of them.
Imagine “friendly” nations kept telling you to do things which will hasten the demise of your country, and will please or benefit your aggressor. And imagine they partnered with the aggressor on projects over your loud objections. And they are owed gratitude for their “support”.
But you don’t need to imagine any of it. It’s all real.

STOP THANKING PEOPLE WHO WRITE ABOUT “PRO-RUSSIAN SEPARATISTS” IN UKRAINE.

DEMAND THAT THEY USE ACCURATE LANGUAGE.

They are Russian occupation forces. That’s it. The traitorous local collaborators don’t change the fact or nature of Russia’s invasion.
There is no “both sides” where “Ukraine claims” and “Russia says”.

NO.

There is no honesty or accuracy in this pseudo “balanced” presentation of the situation.

There is only one truth: Russia invaded Ukraine.
I’m fed up with this shit. It isn’t just “semantics”. If you do not use ACCURATE language about Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, don’t expect anyone else to either. And that means dramatic limits on what Ukraine’s legal recourse is.

CALL THINGS BY THEIR PROPER NAMES.

If you live in occupied Donbas & felt all your life that you're Russian, belong to Russia, want to join RU, it's a mistake to continue living in Donbas. Donbas will never be RU. For the future of your kids and grandkids, you should seek your place in Russia.

- President Zelensky
Zelensky makes an absolutely uncharacteristic statement which is a massive departure from his stated objective and policy of "winning hearts and minds" of Ukrainians in Russia-occupied Donbas, Ukraine.

This should raise eyebrows.

Even though many would agree with the general sentiment, not only it is at odds with Zelensky's previous position, it is a dangerous - and possibly harmful - way for the president of Ukraine to address residents of Russia-occupied Ukraine.

I recently expressed concern about how many double dose vaccinated people were going back to pre-Covid normal, and were partying it up too much. I got serious shit from a lot of people. Several of the “we need a break from these measures and deserve to relax now” got COVID.
I take zero pleasure in that fact. I share it because they are the same people who, (as I expected) now that they got infected after vaccination, are warning people to “take delay seriously” and “keep wearing a mask even if fully vaxxed” because they didn’t and got sick.
We shouldn’t have to go through this insanity. We need to be adequately informed about what Covid is, how it spreads, what vaccines do, and why we still need the added layer of preventative safety measures like masks for now.

I do not wish COVID on *anyone*

I don’t want anyone to become infected with this horrible virus

But I would certainly prefer staunch anti-vaxxers who will not even have a civil convo be the ones to fall ill over a child who got sick because our governments have failed us.
I’ve lost family to COVID. Death came far too soon. Family & friends have suffered COVID induced stroke, heart attack, and a plethora of other horrible ailments. Some with “very mild” almost asymptomatic cases are experiencing the very real hell of #LongCovid. It’s awful.
My son was born at the outset of the pandemic. Our lives are full of challenges because of this pandemic. I know how hard it is for many. But I can guarantee that it will NOT get better on the course many places are taking. Just look at Florida. The numbers are STAGGERING.

You know, if people were more open and honest about what is said in casual private conversations, many a “friend” and “expert” on Ukraine would suffer some serious reputational damage.
I’ve been in situations where the following things have been expressed:
- a then western ambo to Ukraine (who enjoys great standing among Ukrainians) told me that Russian oligarch, Mikhail Friedman, is a “good guy” with “an undeservedly bad rep” & is actually a FRIEND to Ukraine;
- a young female “expert” who spent several years working on Ukraine, visits often, and always publicly says how much she loves Ukrainians, said she had “no choice but to be celibate” in Ukraine because the men are “so disgusting” & “you know they are definitely all bad in bed”;

Why is @bellingcat helping Moscow & Minsk pursue the narrative that the captured Belarusian dissident Roman Protasevich is a neo-Nazi?
EVEN IF HE IS - which everyone who knows him says he absolutely is not - THIS IS NOT THE STORY. Only Putin & Lukashenko want you to think it is.
Russia and Belarus (let’s not kid ourselves that Belarus did this on its one) hijacked a plane to kidnap and jail a journo critical of the evil Lukashenko regime. They want to distract from the air piracy and detention of a dissident who may very likely be killed by the state.
THAT is the story. Two evil, rogue, terrorist, authoritarian regimes manufacture cause to detain and then torture and kill those who dare to utter a critical word. Not that who they detained could be anything the regimes claim about him to distract from their criminality.
