I have a bike, shiny, 1 mo old. I had to buy this cheap new bike to replace one stolen 6 wks ago. I got it online.

I meet my girlfriend, on her bike, & my bike I’ve parked about 15 feet away around the corner of the store. We kiss. Stuff. I turn back around & there’s a guy pushing one bike & with his hands on mine, about to push it away.

Clearly he was attempting to steal it (in a matter of a minute from having gotten there! With me nearby & him even pushing a (probably) stolen other bike!)

You see, I’m not even concerned he’s pushing my bike away. I kind of expect it as there is a lot of homelessness & desperation in Eugene, and several HUGE homeless camps. I feel compassion for these folks, and have many friends among them.

So, I’m not even ruffled. I just go get my bike, put my hands on it, and start removing it from the guy’s hands. About like you would to your child who had grabbed the wrong toy, or someone mentally confused (also many on the streets).

I said, “I am. You keep asking the same fucking question, which I’ve answered again and again.”

& I am gradually getting more loud as I know this is a situation that I want folks around to focus on.

He won’t directly call me a liar, he just keeps DEMANDING I take him to the person I bought it from, refusing to go away and back off.

Now, I’m really thinking there could be trouble, so I say, “Do you really want me to call the police to straighten this out?”

And now it's creating a scene, with the manager & my girl friend coming outside now.

Long story, short, he was shooed off by the store manager. & I felt a little vindicated & glad no harm would come to anyone or my lady &* I didn’t have to kick someone’s ass to ensure that.

It was only later it dawned on me how I was conned & how slick this bike thief (election thief?) was.

I was impressed with the savvy but really miffed at myself that I didn’t see what he was doing while he was doing it, and that he simply walked away.

In the end, all were just happy to have him leave the scene. I had been defended & protected, but as for bike thief, well….

Remember, he left the scene, walked away, no problem, & I had been vindicated, though I was pretty damn pissed.
