1. New cases of #Omicron infections began to be reported daily only on 21 Dec when there were 200 cases in the preceding 24 hours. (note there is a lag of 4-5 days for genome sequencing to be done) 2. On 29 Dec there were 781 cases in 24 hours.
That's a 4 fold growth but lags in reporting the Dec 25 holioday period etc make this a vbery crude estimate of growth. Total Covid cases (i.e. all variants) over the same period grew fromaround 7,000 cases on 19/20 Dec to 9,195 cases on 29 Dec.
But I am reluctant to draw any chart yet because the daily cases numbers are fluctuating. (6,531 on 27 Dec and 6,358 on 28 Dec).
The key is the number of tests done and the % of positive swabs sent for genomic analysis. This is less clear.
@PIB_India reports each day a figure for tests done to date. using these numbers (66.51 Crores tests done to 20 Dec and 67.52 Cr to 29 Dec. I deduce a daily average of 1.1 million tests. No data on %age that are genome sequenced.
As a crude estimate, a full genome sequence may not be necessary to detect #Omicron. see this nice graphic from @BBC
In contrast, England reported 117,000 new cases of Covid in one day, and USA: 440,000 and France: 180,000 cases. So, unless #Omicron behaves v differently in India, the new wave of #Covid infections is yet to come.

#ElectoralBonds the real story. A Measure of Corruption at the HIghest Levels of Political Power in India -
Headline figure: 8,000 Crore Rupees. = 80 Billion INR = 1.06 Billion US Dollars.
Where do these figures come from? The Horse's mouth.
How? A written reply in #LokSabha.
On 13 Dec 2021 Miinister of State (finance) Pankaj Chaudhuri answered Question No 2314. See the link here: http://164.100.24.220/loksabhaquestions/annex/177/AU2314.pdf
In the 18 rounds since they were launched in Dec 2018, the total sum of money that passed to Political parties from donors via #ElectoralBonds was:
INR 79,94, 97,75,000. i.e just shy of 8,000 Crores.
Conveniently, the reply stated: Party-wise data "is not collated centrally"
India's wholesale prices index - the facts.
from tradingeconomics.com/india/producer…
The annual wholesale price inflation rate in India rose to 14.23 percent in November 2021 from 12.54 percent in the previous month, beating market forecasts of 11.9 percent.
This marked the highest figure since December 1998. The price-inflation for fuel (39.81 %) and power (37.18 percent in October).
It's worth spending a moment to understand what is being measured in the WPI. In India this is the most important measure of infaltion. sooner or later these costs are passed on to the consumer. See:
Why am I seeing more and more tweets that announce, "Ive got a place to study < fill in subject S> in <Fill in name of Foreign University >. Please help me defray the costs."
But does this trend not highlight the growing inadequacy of India's higher education capacity?
There hv bn a range of replies and comments on my tweet above. Let me follow up with this comment. The fact is that in any country wherever it may be on the scale of wealth and development, education in an overseas University can only be for an elite rich privileged minority.
For the vast majority of children and young people the opportunities for education will have to be found nearer home. Primary and sec school to age 18 this is of course totally true. But even for post-18 Univ / college this is largely the case.
India's far-Right Internet warriors are so quick to jump on the desi v Amreeka bandwagon. This @Twitter exchange is being shared on Whatsapp groups with comments s/as: "Typical mentality that keeps us enslaved psychologically".
The US FDA's action might seem arbitrary, and Pfizer's demands may well seem arrogant, but to link the two in some kind of #Bharat as #Vishwaguru v America as Foreign #Angrez#Gora bad guy is silly, unhelpful, and won't get us anywhere. There are two questions that are relevant
Q1. Is the @US_FDA singling out @BharatBiotech's Covaxin for discriminatory treatment because it is a #desi#vaccine?. BTW, that is not my descriptive term it was used by @blsanthosh.
A. No. Not if you consider that so far ONLY 3 vaccines have had #EUA from the FDA.
Some fascinating insights from @jyotiyadaav from rural India. She describes one location where you have to travel 20 kilometers (or is it miles) just to be able to send or receive a whatsapp message? And we complain of slow 4G!!
Her account of vaccine hesitancy (VH) in villages have changed my perspective. Yes there is vaccine hesitancy everywhere but at least thus far in India VH is NOT the rate limiting factor but that may be bec we have not yet taken it out to the villages
The story that @BharatBiotech's US partner Ocugen has decided to hold its application to the US FDA (Food and Drugs Administration) for an Emergency Use License and file later for a full license has been widely reported. reuters.com/business/healt…
But what is an Emergency Use Authorization (#EUA) and what does a company need to to satisfy @US_FDA? here's a video explaining it:
But, in essence, it is a provision to make availabile and permit the "use of medical countermeasures (MCMs)" in a public health emergency.
