Though I was symptomatic as a child, I didn't have a #colonoscopy until 22 when I got my 1st job. That's when I received my very delayed #IBD diagnosis. #MondayNightIBD #SouthAsianIBD

India's far-Right Internet warriors are so quick to jump on the desi v Amreeka bandwagon. This @Twitter exchange is being shared on Whatsapp groups with comments s/as: "Typical mentality that keeps us enslaved psychologically".
The US FDA's action might seem arbitrary, and Pfizer's demands may well seem arrogant, but to link the two in some kind of #Bharat as #Vishwaguru v America as Foreign #Angrez #Gora bad guy is silly, unhelpful, and won't get us anywhere. There are two questions that are relevant
Q1. Is the @US_FDA singling out @BharatBiotech's Covaxin for discriminatory treatment because it is a #desi #vaccine?. BTW, that is not my descriptive term it was used by @blsanthosh.
A. No. Not if you consider that so far ONLY 3 vaccines have had #EUA from the FDA.

The shambles and confusion about the regulatory approval for @BharatBiotech's #Covishield #vaccine will have serious consequences for the #Indian #biopharma industry. The real tragedy is NOT that an unsuitable or ineffective vaccine has been approved.
The real tragedy has been that the scientific process of basing decisions on data has been ruptured. Today nobody has any idea of the efficacy (as judged in field trials) of the efficacy of #Covaxin. This is as much a slap in the face for the scientists in @BharatBiotech
as it is a betrayal of the 22,000 subjects who had been enrolled in the as yet on-going phase 3 clinical trials. Their altruism in volunteering for the trial has been trashed, as has the painstaking work of the trial doctors been devalued.

1/ Valuation venture investing myths #urban #legends a #thread for #desi #founders

If you are a #founder or #startup trying to raise a round, here are a few things you should know before you start.

I wish someone had sat me down and had this chat with me when I started.
2/ No one owes you a round.

First things first. I know we want to change the world, we are innovative, we are working on the bleeding edge, but...

No one owe us a round

An investment is a commercial transaction. It needs to make business sense. Without that, there is no deal
3/ Venture funding is not for everyone.

Fund managers need exits and liquidity events.

Investors need downside protection.

The right deals are bets on growth, scale, markets, risk, timing, teams. Often before everyone gets what is on offer. Getting the combo right is difficult

1/ Self publishing vs other options.

Let's get one thing out of the way.

You should publish once with a mainstream publisher. Get it out of the system. You should sell a title on Amazon. Make it to your genre, subject top 10 list. Even hit the numero uno spot for a day.
2/ But once you are done, you are done.

It doesn't matter who your publisher, distributor or book seller is. In the end you, the author, sells the book.

You create the hype, you generate the traffic, you direct the buyers.

Amazon doesn't get people to your book, you do
3/ So if you are writing the book, editing it, marketing it, promoting it, how much of the book proceeds do you get?

Do you get to talk or see or engage with your customers? Do you even know who they are?

With main stream publishing, no. There is no data, real time or otherwise

1/ The Habib University Lecture series play list.

Every year for the last 4 years I have taught the Technology Management and Entrepreneurship course at @HabibUniversity

The course serves as introduction to entrepreneurship to CS/EE graduating seniors and juniors
2/ This year due to Covid-19, half the course was delivered remotely. 8 lectures in total. Some more longer and boring than others. However given this was the last half of the course, all of them focused on questions founders face.

Here is the available play list. 7 hrs.
3/ While the intended audience were students at Habib, the same material is used at the startup boot camp for founders and startups at @TheNestiO

Some of the content has also been shared at the @SpringAccel #bootcamp in #Nepal, at @NIC_Pakistan and at @SPJainGlobal in Dubai.

2/ Recently introduced to @dvassallo + @david_perell
Both exceedingly generous and open with their advice and models.

I am based in Pakistan with a #desi network. I wondered if their models would work and scale on the other side of the planet.
3/ For my digital book pre-orders launch campaign this week I designed a simple experiment

Put up a @Bitly link for pre-orders.
Launched organic campaign posts on Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter at the same time.
Collated results at the end of 4 days.

Here is a brief parable of a Hindu Temple in England.
A parable of how lawyers and accountants benefited from the infighting of #desi trustees and NRI businessmen out for influence and power, driven by #ego and disregard for #dharma. It's enough to turn you #atheist. Read on...
I'll start near the end; Here is the penultimate chapter in this sorry saga of greed, ego, arrogance and hubris of men (yes they're all men). This notice appeared in the Public Gazette.
Yes you read it right. This company (#TTBT) could not pay its own lawyers and so ended up here
But it started with noble intentions, hard work, dedication and sacrifice by public spirited men (yes men can be public spirited too). In the early 1990s a group of men - mainly doctors set up a charity called SVBT (Sri Venkateswara Balaji Temple) and raised money.

2/ For most founders the journey takes 3 to 6 years.

The actual path varies but generally includes three key transit point before you hit the golden milestone.

Less $250k, Less than $500k, Less than $800k, 1M+
3/ I have yet to meet a team that did the $10k to $1M+ leap in less than 18 months in the real world.

I meet one that is planning to do it on paper or Excel in less than a year, once every month.

0/ Estimating market sizes.

A thread for #desi #founders and #startups

How do you estimate #marketsize for your products and services? A list of things to do and ...
1/ Numbers maketh the man

Please don’t quote numbers you don’t own, haven’t derived or understand for your market size.

You are the founder, do the math yourself. Make sure they validate

With apologies to #Kingsmen + @colinfirth_kr numbers, not manners, maketh the man.
2/ Avoid lazy thinking.

It is a bad idea to quote a multi-lateral agency report for Asia for a problem that you are solving.

Don’t tell me that according to World Bank, IMF, IFC or ADB, the FinTech market in Asia will be worth 4 trillion USD in 2030.

Why you ask?

Every #Desi group in #Facebook is hijacked! (Read on)

'Desh' is a Sanskrit word that means 'Land', 'Homeland', 'Native Land' or 'Country'. Usually, the word 'Desi', a contemporary colloquial word, is used to describe South Asian Indians, Pakistani or Bangladeshi living abroad. ImageImageImageImage
Example:
Desi in Chicago Facebook Group, 13K members facebook.com/groups/1659297…
Creator: Shy Khan, Pakistani Muslim,tinyurl.com/y7mw3xu2
Group discussion : facebook.com/groups/1659297…
All the responders are Muslims (Mohammed Akbar, Sultan Papa, Syed Ayoob, Amer Hydro Nawab Mirza)
So, since India was broken and divided based on religion, and 2 Islamic countries created out of it...this is the reality of Desi groups. Hindus cannot say a word defending #Hindu or #India. Muslims will hound you like ferocious wolves. THEY WANT TO SILENCE YOU.

#SAJA25 In ‘03 I was heading to college & start my journalism career. Mom made a really good good point: “there’s not a lot of #Desi journalists out there” she said. So I went on Google & searched “Indian/South Asian journalists?”
I found a simple website saja.org Image
To become a member, you had to MAIL A CHECK to a man in Connecticut 🤷🏾‍♀️. So I think it was check # 3 that went to longtime SAJA treasurer @johnlaxmi & a few weeks later I became a student member of the South Asian Journalists Association. Got an email confirmation & everything.
For years being a @sajahq member simply meant that I got their emails. @sree’s constant updates & a rolling compendium of brown journos in the US. As one of the only 🇮🇳 American students at my small Wisconsin college it meant the world just knowing there were other Desi journos

In another thread, @Asians4Pete asked how we first encountered @PeteButtigieg. My story is kinda long (or maybe I'm just long-winded), so I'm starting a different thread. The operative word is "long" 😬. 1/31

I moved to the US to attend Notre Dame. One of the first people I met was the chair of the English department there. So basically, unlike most of my fellow Americans, for as long as I've lived in this country, I've known how to pronounce Buttigieg. 2/31
(Aside to @Chas10Buttigieg: Buddha-judge is not how you pronounce Buttigieg. As any #desi will tell you, that's not even how you pronounce Buddha.) 3/31
