The Lesson of January 6: Zero-Sum Racism is the Biggest Threat to U.S. Democracy. medium.com/@heathercmcghe…
By tracking the hundreds of insurrectionists who have been arrested over the past year, researchers from @UChicago were able to conclude that the rioters’ primary driver was “fear of the ‘great replacement’, the belief that the rights of minorities will overtake that of whites.”
Despite universal condemnation in Washington during the violent siege, on the next day, the majority of the House #Republican caucus voted to do what the mob wanted: refuse to certify the election results.
The lie of the stolen election is not just a wild fantasy — it is anchored in our long history of zero-sum racial hierarchy.
To believe the #BigLie, you have to think that it’s just as safe to assume that black and brown people are criminals committing fraud as it is to assume they’re eligible citizens exercising their civic duty.
The tools and strategies of zero-sum #racism are still wreaking havoc in our #democracy, at a cost to the entire project of self-governance.
When you track who funded the “#StoptheSteal” movement and ongoing plans to overturn elections, they’re the same people who benefit from tax handouts and corporate giveaways when #Republicans gain power despite losing the majority of votes.
Let’s pledge, on this terrible anniversary, to do all that we can to protect democracy. #VotingRightsNow

This is our chance, to choose between the zero-sum delusions of white supremacy and the benefits of a truly multiracial democracy.

As we start this week, remember, #BuildBackBetter is:
$3.5T *over 10 years*,
which is just 1.2% of GDP.
With ~$1T in tax cuts for the rest of us,
it's ~4% more spending. THAT'S IT.
And we get:
fast wifi, child&elder care, paid leave, lotsa jobs and a shot at SAVING THE PLANET.

🧵My TED talk is live! A prejudiced C-SPAN caller...the financial crisis...our gutted safety net all made me ask: "what if racism has a cost for everyone?" #CostsofRacism @TEDTalks bit.ly/thesumofus
2/"Racism leads to bad policymaking. It’s making our economy worse, in ways that don’t only disadvantage people of color. It turns out it’s not a zero sum. Racism has costs for white people, too.” bit.ly/thesumofus @TEDTalks
3/“In Montgomery, Alabama, I saw how racism destroyed a public good and the public will to support it. In 1959, the town drained their public swimming pool rather than integrate it. It was never rebuilt.” bit.ly/thesumofus

THREAD: My family went to Iowa to volunteer for our next president @ewarren. She is fearless & superhuman smart. Politics' best communicator. I've known her for almost 20 years & have never met her like. America may not deserve her, but I pray we get her. #AllOfUs4Warren
@ewarren 2/I believe @ewarren is our best chance to beat Trump, harness this women’s movement moment and remake the Democratic party. Trump’s relentless attacks on her & fake populism show he knows it, too.
3/Her message of beating back corruption to win structural change for the people is the best for 2020, and her knocked-down-fought-back life story makes that message vivid:
