What India (#TSDSI) has done in #5G? What is #5Gi? It has largely escaped main stream media attention in India. We focus so poorly on our scientific achievements 😀. Here is a Thread-

1. ITU defined the requirements of IMT 2020- official ITU name of 5G. Rural enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) configuration focused on intersite distance of 1.7 Km & 120/500 km/hour speed of vehicles - a speed unthinkable in rural India😀. A requirement unsuitable for #India.

2. #TSDSI's Low Mobility Large Cell (LMLC) focuses on low speeds such as 3/30 Km/hour for pedestrian and vehicles and intersite distance of 6 Km to address Indian scenario. .

3. India's Low Mobility Large Cell requirement was accepted by ITU as mandatory requirement of #Rural eMBB in Q3 2017- major win for #India.

4. Standards setting organizations were then required to submit Radio Interface Technology (RIT) that meet ITU's IMT 2020 to qualify as IMT2020-5G standard. ITU evaluates submitted RIT to check if it meets IMT 2020 requirements only then it can be accepted as 5G/IMT 2020 standard

5. 3GPP is a partnership project of standards development organizations of US, Europe, Korea, China,Japan & India. India (#TSDSI) became organizational partner of 3GPP only in 2017- a strategic move (2017? what we were doing all these years?,well were not playing at global level)

6.1 3GPP develops specifications (called Releases). Appropriate Releases may be submitted to ITU for qualifying as IMT standard.

6.2 When Indian contributions on new radio waveform that meets Low Mobility Large Cell scenario did not get accepted in 3GPP Release 15 (don't ask me why 😀 TSDSI submitted its own Radio Interface Technology (RIT) called #5Gi as candidate technology for IMT 2020.

7. 5Gi was largely based on 3GPP specifications except the new Radio waveform and some other tweaks. 5Gi was evaluated by ITU and it met IMT 2020 requirements and therefore qualified as IMT 2020 Family of standards- again a major win for #TSDSI and #India.

8. 3GPP announced on December 17, 2021 that it agrees to incorporate TSDSI's new radio waveform in future specification release - Release 17 thus enabling merging of 5Gi into 3GPP's 5G specifications.

9. #TSDSI has been able to incorporate Indian contributions in global wireless standard- a major achievement for India researchers.
What is next ? This is just a beginning and opens up possibility for playing at global level in #6G.
