BREAKING: @calstate Hindu students write to university admins expressing their fear around its policy on "caste." Over the past few months, CoHNA has been providing emotional support and counsel to young students scared by the growing anti-Hindu sentiment on campus. Excerpts👇🏾1/n
Letter sent yesterday as @calstate trustees silenced their Hindu faculty who had protested the move to include "caste" in @CFA_United collective bargaining agreement. They also refused to hear from hundreds of concerned Hindu residents who called into their public hearing. 2/n
"I am afraid that this type of policy, if passed, can single out students and faculty members of Hindu and Indian heritage, subject them to bullying, harassment and intimidation and violate their civil rights." 3/n
"The potential implications of the policy cannot be understated. A student may claim that their rejection from a team or club is based on their caste - blaming the club for being 'casteist.'" 4/n
"This in turn can cause trauma for student organizations who were not aware of the accuser's caste and had rejected him or her for other reasons." 5/n
"Similarly, teaching assistants or professors may also be accused of being 'casteist' if a student feels unhappy with his or her grade; or, for somehow spending less time with one student versus another." 6/n
"As we have seen at universities like @ucdavis, the most popular Hindu festivals such as Holi and Diwali are already being falsely portrayed and labeled as 'casteist' - often by the very groups advocating for caste policies." 7/n
"As a result, we are afraid that being a Hindu and celebrating our festivals freely on campus will be labeled as 'casteist' and prevent us from freely practicing our religion for fear of stereotyping from the campus community." 8/n
"Hence, passing this policy will put me in a mental state where I will feel terrorized to speak about who I am as a Hindu - fearing that people will stereotype me or target me simply due to my last name, my family or my Hindu background." 9/n
"I will feel uncomfortable wearing cultural outfits, conducting religious rituals, catering vegetarian food or even simply holding a discussion on our religious practices and philosophy due to fear of being labeled a 'caste oppressor.'" 10/n

THREAD: @npr's journalist @lfrayer is an example of the continued problematic representation and structural bias against #Hinduism and #India in mainstream media. A random video of trash and lawlessness in Los Angeles is an opportunity to bash India. 1/n
And this on the holy day of #MakarSankranti, when the country she reports about is honoring the forces of nature--harvest cycles, the rains, the alignment of the sun, the zodiac, traditional local foods & more. But colonial media representatives can only see India in trash. 2/n
@lfrayer seems to be taking cues from Katherine Mayo, a racist American historian, whose 1927 book, "Mother India," was denounced as a “drain inspectors report” by no less a personage than Mahatma Gandhi. #Hinduphobia unfortunately has a long history. 3/n gutenberg.net.au/ebooks03/03008…
THREAD: @TheEconomist begins New Year w/ a dose of #Hinduphobia. Notice the crass image- a "Brahmin" wearing pearls, money in his crown, w/ tiny humans carrying him on a pedestal- depicting "greed" &"tyranny" in ways eerily similar to depictions of Jews in Nazi propaganda. 1/n
Falsely accusing #HinduAmericans of exporting "caste problems", @TheEconomist calls India “troubling.” Never mind that this assertion is based on ONE lawsuit that is still on trial. Or that the 2021 @CarnegieEndow survey showed NO evidence of widespread "caste discrimination."2/n
European literature and art similarly caricatured Jews, Roma and other minority groups. A 1937 anti-Semitic art exhibition, called "The Eternal Jew," shows an "eastern" Jew wearing a kaftan, holding gold coins in one hand and a whip in the other. 3/n historyhit.com/anti-jewish-pr…
THREAD: The #Hinduphobia of @nytimes continues on a regular basis. Here, it ignores well documented evidence of the role of Christian missionaries in erasing indigenous Hindu traditions (appropriating others) to "save" the natives. 1/n
8 states in India have majority or significant Christian population in India according to the 2011 census, with some Northeastern states at over 85% Christians. 2/n census2011.co.in/data/religion/…
The plans go way back. "The Conversion of India" by George Smith of the Young Missionary Movement of NY describes historic missionary plans & attempts to convert "heathen cults of Brahmanism, Buddhism and demonolatory"; sings the glory of colonization. 3/n google.com/url?sa=t&sourc…
THREAD: #Diwali is around the corner, & Hindus will adorn their homes & businesses w/ the Swastika. But, Prof Truschke peddles #Hinduphobia in the name of the Swastika (this is not the first time). Her argument is dangerous & should be condemned by @rutgers & @Rutgers_Newark. 1/n
"Ambiguous sense??" The Swastika has ALWAYS been a positive, auspicious sign (vs the Hakenkreuz of Hitler). To suggest that Swastika is "sometimes" and "ambiguously" used by Hindus for hate is blatantly false & paints Hindus as Nazi sympathizers, opens them up for attacks. 2/n
In Sept 2016, she connected an innocuous Indian university building shaped like a Swastika to Nazism, even though the two had nothing to do w/ each other - a thinly veiled attempt to link Hindus & Nazis together again (tweet deleted since then). 3/n
THREAD: @AshleyRindsberg provides eye opening info of how @nytimes never covered the Holocaust & actually supported Nazis. BUT, most people don't know how the paper's orientalist lens popularized the conflation of the Hakenkreuz w/ the Swastika.👇🏾 sundayguardianlive.com/news/nyts-cove… 1/n
In his book, Dr. T.K. Nakagaki shows how the Dec 2, 1923 edition of @nytimes used the correct word (Hakenkreuz) to describe Hitler's symbol. google.com/books/edition/… 2/n
But, a Mar. 19, 1933 article in @nytimes essentially "discovered" the Swastika for popular American mainstream, conflated it with Hitler's symbol. Even then, the paper use the word "hooked cross" and Swastika interchangeably (the hooked cross dropping eventually over time). 3/n
THREAD: Professor Truschke & the "South Asia Scholars" actively erase Kashmiri Hindus in their Hinduphobic "field manual" while denying #Hinduphobia & gaslighting Hindus. Their latest definition of "Kashmir" is a great example & also shows their blatant political agenda. 1/n
"Kashmir" is projected as an "Indian occupied" colonized land by falsely applying the colonial settler argument to Hindus & Indians. Arguments of plebiscite are selectively applied to India while ignoring what the UN actually said & what Pak rejected - indiatimes.com/news/did-you-k… 2/n
Kashmir's indigenous Hindu/Buddhist/Sikh history is completely erased, reset to the events around 1947, to portray India & Hindus as the oppressors while omitting the long & historical contributions of these indigenous religions to Kashmir (named after Hindu Goddess Sharada). 3/n
