THREAD: The #Hinduphobia of @nytimes continues on a regular basis. Here, it ignores well documented evidence of the role of Christian missionaries in erasing indigenous Hindu traditions (appropriating others) to "save" the natives. 1/n

The plans go way back. "The Conversion of India" by George Smith of the Young Missionary Movement of NY describes historic missionary plans & attempts to convert "heathen cults of Brahmanism, Buddhism and demonolatory"; sings the glory of colonization. 3/n google.com/url?sa=t&sourc…

P.5 describes Hindus as "missionaries of evil" while the rest of the book has numerous #Hinduphobic & hateful refs - many of which are still used to attack Hindus & paint our religion as "false," "evil" & "backward." @nytimes should read. 5/n
The book (like the attitudes of Christian missionaries even today) is steeped with racist, xenophobic and anti-Semitic references. This of course is never covered by @nytimes in their zeal to show Hinduism and India as "chaotic" and "extremist." 6/n
A 2013 HuffPost article provides disturbing details on the strategies used by Christian missionaries to convert the local Hindus - targeting especially the impoverished section. This is the ground reality even today and willfully ignored by @nytimes 7/n.

THREAD: #Diwali is around the corner, & Hindus will adorn their homes & businesses w/ the Swastika. But, Prof Truschke peddles #Hinduphobia in the name of the Swastika (this is not the first time). Her argument is dangerous & should be condemned by @rutgers & @Rutgers_Newark. 1/n
"Ambiguous sense??" The Swastika has ALWAYS been a positive, auspicious sign (vs the Hakenkreuz of Hitler). To suggest that Swastika is "sometimes" and "ambiguously" used by Hindus for hate is blatantly false & paints Hindus as Nazi sympathizers, opens them up for attacks. 2/n
In Sept 2016, she connected an innocuous Indian university building shaped like a Swastika to Nazism, even though the two had nothing to do w/ each other - a thinly veiled attempt to link Hindus & Nazis together again (tweet deleted since then). 3/n

In his book, Dr. T.K. Nakagaki shows how the Dec 2, 1923 edition of @nytimes used the correct word (Hakenkreuz) to describe Hitler's symbol. google.com/books/edition/… 2/n
But, a Mar. 19, 1933 article in @nytimes essentially "discovered" the Swastika for popular American mainstream, conflated it with Hitler's symbol. Even then, the paper use the word "hooked cross" and Swastika interchangeably (the hooked cross dropping eventually over time). 3/n

THREAD: Professor Truschke & the "South Asia Scholars" actively erase Kashmiri Hindus in their Hinduphobic "field manual" while denying #Hinduphobia & gaslighting Hindus. Their latest definition of "Kashmir" is a great example & also shows their blatant political agenda. 1/n

Kashmir's indigenous Hindu/Buddhist/Sikh history is completely erased, reset to the events around 1947, to portray India & Hindus as the oppressors while omitting the long & historical contributions of these indigenous religions to Kashmir (named after Hindu Goddess Sharada). 3/n

D1 Sess.3, Dr. Gajendran Ayyathurai of @uniGoettingen dangerously and falsely declared that Hinduism inspired Nazism, opening Hindus up for hatred, gaslighting and harassment. 2/n
D1 Sess.3, Dr. Ayyathurai called Hindus "violent malignant Brahmins." Targeted 5 Hindu last names as those with a history of extreme violence, quoting that they are "...violent advocates of...malignant Brahmanism," thus singling out groups + encouraging violence, bullying. 3/n

The signatories stated: "we cannot help but feel intensely hurt when universities officially endorse those who have a history of bigotry against the same texts and religious traditions." 2/n
Letter’s signatories include a mix of orgs - from some of the largest Hindu temples & national associations, to interfaith allies, local cultural groups - and represent hundreds of thousands of mainstream Hindus, who live, study & work in communities across the two countries. 3/n
