THREAD: @AshleyRindsberg provides eye opening info of how @nytimes never covered the Holocaust & actually supported Nazis. BUT, most people don't know how the paper's orientalist lens popularized the conflation of the Hakenkreuz w/ the Swastika.👇🏾 sundayguardianlive.com/news/nyts-cove… 1/n
In his book, Dr. T.K. Nakagaki shows how the Dec 2, 1923 edition of @nytimes used the correct word (Hakenkreuz) to describe Hitler's symbol. google.com/books/edition/… 2/n
But, a Mar. 19, 1933 article in @nytimes essentially "discovered" the Swastika for popular American mainstream, conflated it with Hitler's symbol. Even then, the paper use the word "hooked cross" and Swastika interchangeably (the hooked cross dropping eventually over time). 3/n
While @nytimes discusses the history of Swastika and its connections with Hindus and Buddhists, along with similar symbols in Europe and among Native Americans, the picture and the headline cement the wrongful association of the sacred Swastika with Hitler's Hakenkreuz. 4/n
The fact is - the Swastika NEVER made its way to Germany. The Germans ALWAYS used the word "Hakenkreuz" (hooked cross) to describe Hitler's symbol and associated it with Christianity (something that Hitler and the Nazis exploited severely). Read - cohna.org/swastika-is-no… 5/n
The damage to Hindus, Buddhists, Jains was grave - our sacred symbol, which had NOTHING TO DO WITH THE HAKENKREUZ, started to be wrongfully associated with hatred and genocide in the West. 6/n
As Hindus, Buddhists, Jains & Sikhs celebrate #Diwali, it is important to properly distinguish between a sacred symbol (Swastika) & the symbol of hate & genocide (Hakenkreuz or "hooked cross") to increase mutual understanding & respect. Our Brochure - cohna.org/wp-content/upl… 7/n

THREAD: Professor Truschke & the "South Asia Scholars" actively erase Kashmiri Hindus in their Hinduphobic "field manual" while denying #Hinduphobia & gaslighting Hindus. Their latest definition of "Kashmir" is a great example & also shows their blatant political agenda. 1/n
"Kashmir" is projected as an "Indian occupied" colonized land by falsely applying the colonial settler argument to Hindus & Indians. Arguments of plebiscite are selectively applied to India while ignoring what the UN actually said & what Pak rejected - indiatimes.com/news/did-you-k… 2/n
Kashmir's indigenous Hindu/Buddhist/Sikh history is completely erased, reset to the events around 1947, to portray India & Hindus as the oppressors while omitting the long & historical contributions of these indigenous religions to Kashmir (named after Hindu Goddess Sharada). 3/n
ACTION ALERT: Urge universities & their departments to condemn open bigotry against #Hindus by @dghconference. Thread provides evidence of #Hinduphobia + hate speech against #Hinduism. We ask the community & our allies to take action now! Visit cohna.org/dismantlehindu… 1/n
D1 Sess.3, Dr. Gajendran Ayyathurai of @uniGoettingen dangerously and falsely declared that Hinduism inspired Nazism, opening Hindus up for hatred, gaslighting and harassment. 2/n
D1 Sess.3, Dr. Ayyathurai called Hindus "violent malignant Brahmins." Targeted 5 Hindu last names as those with a history of extreme violence, quoting that they are "...violent advocates of...malignant Brahmanism," thus singling out groups + encouraging violence, bullying. 3/n
BREAKING: A diverse group of 150 American and Canadian organizations write to universities expressing concerns regarding @dghconference, urging them to disavow such a Hinduphobic conference. 1/n cohna.org/org-letter-dgh…
The signatories stated: "we cannot help but feel intensely hurt when universities officially endorse those who have a history of bigotry against the same texts and religious traditions." 2/n
Letter’s signatories include a mix of orgs - from some of the largest Hindu temples & national associations, to interfaith allies, local cultural groups - and represent hundreds of thousands of mainstream Hindus, who live, study & work in communities across the two countries. 3/n
THREAD: Action alert - urge your local and federal lawmakers to call the universities sponsoring the "Dismantling Global Hindutva" Conf. "Academic freedom" cannot be a licensed for bigotry and hate. Here's why 1/n👇🏾cohna.org/us-lawmakers-d…
The Hindu American community has been working hard to engage with various universities and impress upon them the bigoted nature of this conference. However, we also need to engage our lawmakers and elected officials. 2/n
On the 20th Anniv of the #September11 and the biggest attack on American soil, the conf organizers are attempting to deflect attention from real terror and radicalism and are instead dangerously conflating Hindu organizations with Al Qaeda, Taliban and other terrorists. 3/n
As we showed in our letter, the speakers and conference resources have a history of advancing bigotry and #Hinduphobia, disparaging Hindu deities and supporting violent political movements. 2/n cohna.org/dismantlehindu…
One of the keynote speakers has called Shri Rama a "di**head" while another has created a short film that false projects the Ramayana as a racist epic that endorses casteism based on colonial theories. "Scholarly discussions"? 3/n
THREAD - ACTION ALERT: #DismantleHinduphobia. Urge universities to dissociate themselves from the "Dismantling Global Hindutva" conference and not support bigotry against Hindus. Here's why.👇🏾1/n cohna.org/dismantlehindu…
As Hindus, we welcome any open exchange of ideas and the freedom of academics to pursue scholarly inquiry without restraint. However, this conference falsely paints Hindus as purveyors of extremism, actively denies the genocide of Hindu people, and most troublingly...2/n
...labels those who disagree as "Hindutva," which the conference organizers define as Hindu extremism. 3/n
