Here's the new Education Secretary's speech about his priorities.

A few preliminary notes on the higher ed section:
ed.gov/news/speeches/…
#Thread
1/n
Emphasis on ROI for college degrees:
"we must transform education beyond high school so that it works for everybody, and so that it leads to well-paying, rewarding careers. "

2/n
Wants to increase enrollment+address debt anxiety:

"too many talented Americans are choosing against enrolling in higher education due to the fear of debt and the feeling that college is out of reach. "

3/n
A call for more DoE action in higher ed:

"We maintain a posture of neglect when postsecondary education is out of reach for students and their families. This is unamerican."

4/n
No debt cancellation:

"we're committed to supporting every student loan borrower when they transition back into repayment."

5/n
Going after bad for-profits:

"We're also committed to holding programs, colleges and universities accountable. We've brought back the enforcement unit in Federal Student Aid to crack down on institutions that defraud students. "

6/n
More on that+ROI:

"we need to make sure schools that focus on career programs aren't leaving students with mountains of debt and without good job opportunities, we've begun the process to create a strong Gainful Employment Rule."

7/n
Closer higher ed-K-12 ties:

"creating stronger college and career pathways between our pre-k through grade 12 systems, our 2 and 4 year colleges"

8/n
Closer ties w/business in the full quote:

"creating stronger college and career pathways between our pre-k through grade 12 systems, our 2 and 4 year colleges, and our workforce partners so that our systems lead the world. "

9/n
More on higher ed+business:

"we will work with our partners in the Departments of Commerce and Labor to develop career preparation programs that will run through our community colleges. "

10/n
Support for HSIs, HBCUs:

"We will continue to invest in colleges that serve underrepresented groups"

11/n
Increase Pell Grants?

"we will prioritize and increase grants from the Department of Education that allow any American—at any age or point in their career—to pursue higher education. "

12/n
Note the lifelong learning example is about getting a health care job.

13/n
I think that's the whole DoE plan for higher ed now, "our moment to truly reimagine education."

14/n
Not mentioned:
-STEM or technology in particular
-liberal education
-major loan cancellation
-teaching w/ technology
-pandemic lessons (beyond being exhausted)
-state funding for public higher ed
-etc.

15/n
I would like to learn more about the Secretary's vision for #highereducation .

There's a fascinating and at times depressing sketch of campuses responding to Delta at @insidehighered this morning:

insidehighered.com/news/2021/09/2…
@insidehighered "Colleges without mandates -- located in different geographical regions -- include Pennsylvania State University, which as of Monday reported a 67 percent student vaccination rate..."

Just 2/3rds.
@insidehighered "the University of Alabama... reported that at least 61 percent of students and 73 percent of employees had received at least one dose of a vaccine at its main campus in Tuscaloosa."

Flying in the US gives me a sense of a nation struggling to keep going. Flailing, not advancing.
It feels like an exhausted country waiting for something better.
People aren't rebelling much. I have only seen one angry man, wearing a t-shirt designed in bullets and quietly furious at anyone who talked with him.

Gearing up for tonight's ed tech seminar.
The topic: VR, AR, XR.

Most of what I say boils down to go follow @DigitalBodies @mayaig @emorycraig
@DigitalBodies @mayaig @emorycraig Other topics I've set out for XR:
-ethics
-scaffolding learning
-building community in these spaces
-users as creators

Also an interesting museum case study.
@DigitalBodies @mayaig @emorycraig One example to show tonight comes from the great @HardcoreHistory :

@gsdiment This is terrible.

All right, I'll share some updated data.
@gsdiment Where does the #pandemic stand today?

Let me offer some current stats.

Thread.

@gsdiment Btw, I'm working from this #covid19 resources page I launched more than a year ago:

I hope it's useful to other folks.

I wanted to share some quick thoughts about one aspect of the #Cuomo story.

It's about information literacy.

Specifically, it's about reading vs tv watching.

(1/n)
I've been seeing so many Democrats suddenly realize that #Cuomo is a terrible person.

As a native New Yorker, politics junkie, and person of the left, I've been wondering why it took them so long.

(2/n)
After listening to tons of Democrats who adored the man, I started to form a suspicion that it was about media literacy and habits.

Then @pareene and @onthemedia confirmed my guess.

Cuomo fans: tv watchers.
Cuomo critics: readers.
