Three words that encapsulate my three main messages to the @WHO European Region today, amid the latest developments in the #COVID19 narrative.
From the information available to @WHO, the SARS-CoV-2 virus variants circulating in #China are those that have already been seen in Europe and elsewhere.
Childhood obesity is one of the biggest challenges in the WHO European Region.
According to the latest Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative survey results, 31% of boys and 28% of girls aged 7-9 years are living with overweight or obesity.

Every day, among children aged 7-9 in the WHO European Region:
🍏Less than 50% eat fresh fruit
🥕Less than 35% consume vegetables
🥤More than 20% consume sweet soft drinks
Every day, among children aged 7-9 in the WHO European Region:
🏃♂️🤸almost 90% spend at least one hour playing outside
🚴♂️🚶♀️ 40% of children used active transport (i.e. walking or cycling) to and from school
⛹️♂️🤾♂️🤽 around 50% participate in sport activities
The #COVID19 pandemic has accelerated the adoption of #digitalhealth technologies 💻📱🖥️ to benefit patients but has also highlighted the need for a well-trained workforce 🧑⚕️👨⚕️ that understands health informatics and data systems.

The European Region has recorded 12 million new cases in the past week. This is the highest weekly case incidence since the start of the pandemic and is largely being driven by the highly transmissible Omicron variant, as it sweeps from West to East @hans_kluge
30% of all COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began have been reported this year alone.
We now have nearly 150 million reported cases of #COVID19 in Europe and Central Asia to date.

Last month, we alerted that a further half a million lives could be lost by early 2022 unless we take urgent action. We called upon governments and people to take immediate steps to bring down transmission, by implementing 5 pandemic stabilizers @hans_kluge
