Welcome to today’s briefing, Facing the end of Roe v Wade. Remember you can follow the convo here @EThnicMediaSvc or via FB Live fb.me/e/4v9buZbPK Our speakers today are Lisa Matsubara and Jodi Hicks with @PPActionCA and Jessica Pinckney of @access_rj.
Today's briefing is moderated by our very own @PilarMarrero. You can learn more about our speakers and their work by visiting bit.ly/34ABFMC & accessrj.org
Our first speaker is Lisa Matsubara with Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California @PPActionCA. This case before #SCOTUS us a direct challenge to #RoevWade, she says.
This is what will happen if #RoevWade is overturned.
More than 36 million people would lose access if #RoevWade is overturned, says Matsuraba.
1 in 3 circuit court judges are Trump appointees. This has been a key priority of a decades long plan to overturn Roe.
In Texas, people have already lost Roe protections thanks to #SB8, which bans abortions after 6 weeks. Anyone in the country can bring a suit against those violating the ban, with a $10k bounty promised to those who file suit.
Before #SB8 abortion providers sued to block the law. They appealed to #SCOTUS which declined to block the law. Overnight people lost access to abortion services in Texas.
#SCOTUS in December dismissed a #DOJ case against #SB8, leaving it in effect. It has now been 163 days since it has been in effect. Now other states are following suit.
#SCOTUS will decide a case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Org. that is a direct challenge to #RoevWade in June.
It is important to realize that even though Roe is the law, many people even now face barriers to abortion access, and also to basic sexual and reproductive care.
Last year more than 106 abortion restrictions passed, and more than 180 bills restricting abortion have been introduced in 2022.
80% of Americans support access to abortions.
Due to what has happened in Texas, neighboring states are seeing the impact. Wait times in Oklahoma have gone from 3 days to 3 weeks!
What is CA doing? Over 40 orgs came together to discuss the future of #abortion access, offering recommendations with a focus on equity and addressing barriers to access.
#RoevWade is a floor. If it is overturned, it does not mean abortion is illegal in every state. It will kick it to states to make the decision.
Should women begin preparing now to find safe spaces for abortion in advance of the #SCOTUS ruling? Yes, there are efforts underway including in CA to prepare to serve state residents and those who come to access #abortion.
What is the difference between legal precedent and the law? If Congress passes a law to protect abortion, that would be the law of the land. But the votes are not there.
Our next speaker is Jessica Pinckney with @access_rj, the vision of which is to provide information and practical support but also build a community to meet the needs of people seeking reproductive health services.
There are over 80 abortion funds across the US. We operate a health line 10am to 4pm, and people can call in to request support. @access_rj offers financial support to low-income individuals. And Medical does offer support for reproductive services.
Transportation, lodging, childcare and even food are barriers to equal abortion access. Even in California, its large size means people may sometimes have to travel up to 3hrs to the nearest clinic.
About 50% of those having abortions are already parents, so many of these people have existing family care responsibilities, according to the Guttenmacher Institute. guttmacher.org
Majority of callers to @access_rj are low-income people of color, majority in their 20s. Since the #COVID pandemic, there has been an increase in callers, says Jessica Pinckney. In 2021, 1/3 of callers came from 18 states outside of CA.
Should #RoevWade fall, CA will become a safe haven to those seeking #abortion care.
Deep frustration from callers in Texas that their state has failed them and that for many, #SB8 is basically an outright ban on #abortion.
Our next speaker is @JodiHicks, CEO and President of @PPActionCA.
We had a patient who because of #COVID was fearful of airplanes and flying so Ubered from Texas to California to get healthcare. #AbortionIsHealthcare
Trying to navigate how to find care for people who have never traveled out of their home state is a formidable challenge, says @JodiHicks
@PPActionCA had at least 7000 out of state patients in the last fiscal year, from Texas and other states with #abortion restrictions in place.
5 million Black people, 5.7 million Latinos and more than 130k Native people are poised to lose #abortion access. These are the same communities that already face barriers to care.
There are many laws now being passed to restrict access to abortion - including preventing folks from accessing medication abortion through the use of telehealth. For example in Texas S.B. 4 khn.org/news/article/t…
The #SCOTUS decision will unravel abortion access in a way we have not seen in more than 50 yrs.
The Turnaway Study ansirh.org/research/ongoi…
Planned Parenthood has advocated for medical abortion pills. How would #SCOTUS ruling limit these types of #abortion, asks @sunita37. Medication abortion does fall under the potential ban, explains Lisa Matsubara of @PPActionCA
For information on a broader framework of reproductive justice led by Black leaders, please see sistersong.net/reproductive-j…
What we find in many religious or culturally conservative communities is that the portrayed stigma is often larger than individual sentiments and beliefs around #abortion, says Jessica Pinckney of @access_rj.
If #RoevWade is struck down, what is your worst fear, asks @PilarMarrero. People will not have the means to travel, says Lisa Matsubara. We will see increased criminalization of women, she adds.
We will do everything in our power to make CA a safe haven, but it feels like this is a new way of limiting people's bodily autonomy. I worry how we come back from this, says Jessica Pinckney.
You measure a culture by how it treats women and minorities, says @JodiHicks. I worry for an entire generation, that our values and culture will be entirely different than what we grew up with.
"We are looking at a culture in evolution. What does this mean for the next generation? It's not just us," says @EthnicMediaSvc ED Sandy Close. "We are at a point where everything can change."
