1/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 8: As the second week of the war in Ukraine begins it looks as fire the Russians are slowly learning from their opening mistakes and misjudgments. The question remains if they can learn fast enough. #UkraineRussianWar#Ukraine#UkraineUnderAttack
2/ Small yet important gains were made by both Russia and Ukraine today. What follows is a brief synopsis of today’s events and activities in the Ukrainian Theater of War. A general analysis of Russian and Ukrainian operational performance will soon follow.
3/ Kyiv AO assessment is detailed in this chart. Important Ukrainian victories occurred today in northwest Kyiv. Ukrainian forces have been able to retake most of the northwest suburbs and blunt Russian attempts to open new axes of advance to the west.
4/ As impressive as these victories are, the Ukrainians will need to make several more to reverse the momentum of the Russian invasion, which is still on Putin’s side despite setbacks. Ukraine access to foreign lethal aid makes this a possibility.
5/ Northeast AO assessment is detailed in this chart. The Russians continue to assume a great deal of risk in bypassing Ukrainian defensive pockets in the Chernihiv & Sumy Oblasts. These pockets of resistance require many troops to cover them.
6/ There are signs that the Russians are getting better at conducting regimental-sized operations, yet these remain disjointed and not properly supported. Until Russian forces can bring their considerable advantages in large-scale forces to bear Ukraine will be able to resist.
7/ Kharkiv and Donbas AO assessments are detailed in this chart. The Russians have made an important gain today in capturing the city of Svatove, enabling a link-up of the Kharkiv & Donbas AOs. This is a dangerous set bank for Ukrainian forces in the east.
8/ The commanders of the Russian West and South OSKs (military districts) previously served in Syria and played key roles in the siege of Aleppo. It is clear they are employing the same approach to the assaults on Mariupol and Kharkiv.
9/ The Southern Theater assessment is detailed in this chart. As of this post Enerhodar has fallen under Russian control. This is a worrying setback for Ukraine, expect attempts to retake the city and its power plant. Ukraine cannot afford to lose a fifth of electrical power.
10/ Aerospace Operation Assessment. Russian forces appear to be employing and coordinating air-ground integration better. However, the Ukrainian air defense network remains operational, and the UKAF can conduct sorties to support its troops.
11/ Russian Overall Assessment. A topic I will discuss in my first analysis is the apparent, and steady, degradation of Russian operational art. The Russians have been a leader in the development of military theory for the past 100 years. Failures of the last week are telling.
12/ The atrophy of this core competency of the Russian General Staff is curious to say the least. Why this has happened, and what it means for a shift to a more traditional approach of indiscriminate attacks can tell us a lot of how well Ukraine will be able to resist.
13/ Ukrainian Overall Assessment. The Ukrainian military is resourceful and imaginative. The intellectual rigor of its General Staff and field commanders will continue to be the linchpin of Ukraine’s survival.
14/ These updates have been aggregated from various OSINT sources, official Ukrainian government statements, media reports (i.e., AP News, Reuters), and American think tank reports. Daily reports will continue, major weekly assessments / analysis forthcoming.
15/ These maps have been created by me based off the most reliable information of activity in the Ukrainian Theater of War. Errors will be corrected as soon as they are identified.

1/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 9: Russia continues to focus on encircling Kyiv and have made important gains to the east of Kyiv. The Ukrainians estimate Russia has committed 90% of available forces to current operations. #UkraineRussianWar#UkraineUnderAttaсk#UkraineWar
2/ It is likely that the Russian Armed Forces have culminated with the forces currently available. This means we are unlikely to see major Russian gains in the coming days. Reports indicate that substantial reinforcements from the Southern and Eastern OSKs are enroute.
3/ Kyiv AO assessment is detailed in this chart. Key take away, operations on the west bank of the Dnieper will likely shift to consolidation and defense until additional forces arrive. To the east, Russian forces will likely continue to advance into Kyiv. #Kyivunderattack
1/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 7: A week into the Russian invasion of Ukraine has provided a wealth of information as to the nature of major state-on-state war in the 21st Century. I will explore these more in-depth soon. #UkraineRussianWar#UkraineWar
2/ What follows is a brief synopsis of today’s events and activities in the Ukrainian Theater of War. A thorough analysis of Russian and Ukrainian operational performance during this past first week of the war will be forth coming in the next 24-48 hours.
3/ Kyiv AO assessment is detailed in this chart. Western intelligence sources indicate that the Russians are reorienting themselves operationally for a slower attritional campaign as opposed to continuing a horribly planned and executed attempt at large-scale 6th Gen Warfare.
1/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 6: Today saw the Russians continue to complete the resupply and reinforcement of their forces in the Northern Theater of Operations. Continued failure to take Kharkiv has seen an increased use of area-attack munitions. #UkraineRussiaWar
2/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 6: Overall Russian Assessment; It is possible that the ad hoc command structure of the Russian invasion force is the likely cause of its systemic logistical and command failures.
3/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 6: Overall Russian Assessment; It is quite possible that the Russians made these command arraignments only days before the invasion. If this is the case, then it would explain poor logistical support and command execution.
1/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 5: 28 February saw Russian forces reorganizing and reorienting to overcome failures and short comings of the past 96 hours. What remains to be seen is if the Russian military can adapt effectively to the situation it now faces. #UkraineRussiaWar
2/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 5: Ukrainian forces have so far defied the odds but are still hard pressed and will more than likely must make some difficult decisions in the coming days to retain an effective military force capable of defeating the Rus invasion.
3/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 5: Overall Russian Assessment; the Russian Armed Forces remain a highly capable and combat effective force despite some recent analysis to the contrary. Even with haphazard execution, the Rus offensive is positioned to rupture Ukraine’s defenses.
1/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 4: The period of 26-27 February saw a general operational pause in the Northern Theater as Rus Forces reinforce and resupply forward units. Little change has occurred in the Donbas Theater. To the south Rus Forces threaten Mariupol. #UkraineRussia
2/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 4: Kyiv AO assessment is detailed in this chart. Limited attacks in the west Kyiv suburbs have not produced substantive results. It appears Russia’s initial planning assessment assumed Ukrainian defenses would rapidly collapse.
3/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 4: The Russian General Staff is having to reassess the correlation of forces required to punch through stiff Ukrainian resistance to score not only an important military victory, but a morale victory for their forces.
1/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 3: Operations for the past 24 hours have centered on an attempt by Russian forces to seize Kyiv. So far only VDV and special forces troops have been engaged in urban warfare in the capital. #UkraineWar#UkraineRussiaConflict
2/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 3: Kyiv AO assessment is detailed in this chart. Expect the Russians to make a major push from the northeast to bring considerable armored and artillery support for a large-scale urban assault to capture Kyiv over the next few days.
3/ Ukrainian Theater of War, Day 3: Northeast AO assessment is detailed in this chart. If the Russians can avoid additional logistical delays, anticipate them to bypass Ukrainian fixed defenses to place enormous pressure on the Ukrainian military to withdraw from Kyiv.
