🧵Thread 1/ OK, so we need to talk about Kevin (well, Steve Kevin)! Stand aside #TinderSwindler, meet the pro-Putin #TwitterSwindler. This is a thread about the wild crossover of romance scams & pro-Kremlin soc media propaganda
2/ Steve has it all. A doctor who specializes in elbows, knee, all the joints, and erm, low [sic] back. He obviously loves kids, adults and erm, 'teen'. Oh yeah, he also loves Putin, and despite being an American (methinks), his English ain't so hot.
4/ The eagle-eyed among you will notice that Steve Kevin's tribute to Putin garnered a lot of attention. 1231 likes, 226 RTs and 244 replies is nothing to scoff at.
6/ Indeed, apart from his recent diatribes against NATO (see below), his early tweets seem to be mostly about crypto ( 🙄🙄) . Scams or marketing, it's hard to tell.
7/ Well, a reverse image search is, erm revealing. It led me to a Polish facebook group about dating scams. Here we see someone using the same picture and multiple aliases, including Ray Chandler, Raymond Douglas, James Scooott, Frank Wilson, Steven Cooper...
8/ And there are more scam sites, and more names, Henderson Leighton, James John, Stuart Hallam. In fact the only name he hasn't used is probably Vladimir Putin.
9/ So what's going on? Well firstly it's still not clear who is in the original photo, but it's certainly not Steve 'low back' Kevin from Atlanta. I found his tweet by searching for tweets with high engagement on the 'i stand with Putin' hashtag. This is important because...
10/ a characteristic of the hashtag is that many of the most popular tweets are accounts with few followers, and few tweets - which is suspicious. Steve Kevin is just one of many impersonator 'fake' accounts that are promoting pro-Russian propaganda #UkraineRussianWar
11/ Who exactly is behind it is not clear. But the modus operandi appears to be for sock puppet/fake accounts/trolls (won't get bogged down in nomenclature) to promote tweets by these other fake accounts. The numbers are in the thousands. #UkraineRussianWar #disinformation
12/ I saw similar tactics in tweets promoting the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed. Literally thousands of booster bots and fake accounts. See here for more details
13/ So just remember. Steve Kevin is likely one of many thousands of fake accounts or sock puppets boosting 'I stand with Putin'. He's not really an elbow teen doctor.
1/ Prepare for the pedophile #propaganda, it is coming out in full force (again). This blog post by @AdinaF2boys being shared by some on Twitter is stating that Putin is bombing a Biden owned villa in #Ukraine and hammering paedophile rings. She refers to Biden as 'Pedo Joe'.
2/ I came across an interesting Spanish language newsite called @DigitalSevilla . It also published a story about Zelensky releasing paedophiles to fight the Russian army. Rather than being purely batshit, it's based on a real story about soldiers imprisoned for child pornography
3/ However it was interesting that it decided to frame the news as Zelensky 'releasing paedophiles', as if it were specifically them, not just those with military experience. The newsite does have a distinctly pro-Russian slant . See below > I wonder if any Spanish journalists
Thread 1/ Small update. On the hashtags 'I stand with Putin' and 'I stand with Russia', a new bot network has joined the fray. I have marked the cluster below. There are approx 100 bots in this cluster #UkraineRussianWar#disinformation
2/ All the accounts tweet from Twitter Web App, and use appropriated accounts (sock puppets). Their modus operandi is to retweet a few central accounts that are, appropriately, services that offer fake followers, fake retweets etc #UkraineRussianWar
3/ The sockpuppets were real people whose accounts were hacked/sold. They come from everywhere. @VickiCotters for example, a British woman, who is now tweeting in Arabic. Her old tweets are still visible (there are photos but I won't include them). #UkraineUnderAttack
Thread 1/ This is a thread on pro-Russian propaganda & #disinformation. I analysed the hashtags "i stand with Putin" & "i stand with Russia'. I analysed around 20,000 Twitter interactions involving 9600 unique accounts
2/ The network graph shows Twitter accounts interacting. The nodes represent individual accounts, the lines between them tweets, RTs replies etc. Different colours are different communities (accounts that tend to interact with one another more) #UkraineRussiaWar#Ukraine
3/ Below. You can see three distinct clusters.
Cluster 1 (left) accounts that seem to support the hashtag (pro Putin and Russia)
Cluster 2 (middle) = accounts criticising the hashtag
Cluster 3 (bottom) = accounts and bots spamming hashtag and thus boosting it #UkraineRussianWar
[Thread] This is a short analysis of textbook war propaganda, mostly taken from Russian state-controlled media RT and Sputnik
1) First up, don't mention the war! Well almost, Russian websites don't like the term 'invasion', preferring 'special military operation' #Ukraine
2] Emphasise your own military prowess, and attempt to demoralise enemy by emphasizing their losses or weakness. Talk of their 'surrender' or lack of fighting spirit. This gives the idea that resistance is futile #Ukraine
3] After killing civilians make sure you emphasise that you never kill civilians, and that your weapons use those special explosives that only harm military infrastructure. (When this fails, you can claim opposition are using human shields) #UkraineInvasion
1/9 I hope this thread will bring a sliver of joy to those on strike. It's a thread about solidarity and music, and strikes. One of the most profound experiences of my career and life was the #UCUStrike of 2018. It was my second year as
2/9 a lecturer at Uni of Exeter, and my first time on strike. As well as making great friends on the picket line, a few of us formed an impromptu band called 'Comrade Snowflake'. What was wonderful was the solidarity. There was myself, lucky enough to be on a permanent contract,
3/9 @drrhianelinor - at the time a PhD student on a casualized contract, Gabriel, a PhD student, and @GromskiOliver, an undergraduate student and one of the most talented musicians I've ever met. None of us had known each other before, but striking brought us together #ucustrike
[Thread] 1/ Many Apartheid apologists like to use the argument that Amnesty is 'obsessed' with Israel, or 'biased' against Israel. Below are just a few examples of how every supporter of every state Amnesty writes about uses the same propagandistic 'bias argument'. Pattern much?
